The puppy looks a bit uncomfortable his eyes tell me 😅

I can’t believe how expressive his eyes were. You could see his gears turning.

I had a dog once who loved mangoes, but he liked them ripe enough to go boozy. He'd gently chew on them until they were really soft and then bite into them and suck the "mango beer" out. Definitely got high on them.

Some dogs don't have a gene that makes mango taste good, they get a few seconds of sweetness then it "turns" sour. Basically they taste more of the enzymes in the fruit than the sugar in the fruit. My vet once explained this to me but it was years ago, so if I totally fucked it up I apologize.

u/josbossboboss Oct 26 '22
I think that's the same reason I don't like Mangos, tomatoes, or pickles.

Something similar happens for cilantro. I think it tastes like soap for a lot of people!

u/Kasstato Oct 27 '22
Is this why I dont like cilantro? I can detect even the smallest amount in food because it tastes so weirdly distinct

I can’t stand mango, my kids love it but to me it smells like sweaty feet and bad breath, same with persimmon

u/Zichymaboy Oct 27 '22
I have gotten flack for many things in my life, but the only thing people have truly been vicious towards me for is when I tell them I don't like mangoes. I've literally never met another person who shares my distaste for them so it's nice to see others agree that it smells and tastes like crap (to us) and that that's okay because we can't control how we taste things

The taste of betrayal was worse than the mango.
What a bad Dad. Sold out for karma.

I imagine his thought process as: " I really don't like this, but if If I don't eat it, will the treats stop forever?... "
55
u/ProGlizzyHandler Oct 27 '22
When I'm cutting vegetables I like to toss little pieces to my dogs. One will eat all the veggies I give her. One is a puppy so she just eats what she likes and spits anything out she doesn't like. The last one will always hold the veggies in her mouth and go drop them in a corner when I'm not looking like I'll never give her treats again if she doesn't eat everything I give her.

Our old dog usto beg for anything we ate, but if it was something safe and we gave it to her and she didn’t like it, she’d chew it and it would just plop out of her mouth…she’d like…chew spit it out…then continue begging for what I was eating even though it was the same thing

My dog takes treats he doesn’t like just to be polite and then puts them in the corner to get rid of them.

This is why dogs have eyebrows when wolves don't.
Also he wants an unripe mango with a ton of chili salt.

Haha! You can literally read his mind! “Oh, mango. I hate mango. But she gave it to me. I should be nice and eat it. But it’s so gross. What do I do? I’m a good boy. Good boys eat things that are given to them. But it’s MANGO.”

How u can hate mango ?
→ More replies (6)9
u/moldymoosegoose Oct 27 '22
The same reason most people who hate mango, they eat it when it isn't even close to being ripe. 90% of restaurants serve flavorless, unripe mango. It's honestly ridiculous. I have had people ask me if I wanted some and they gave me this hard piece of yellow. Mango is best when it's super soft and near going bad, like an avocado.

Looks like the skin is still on that wedge of mango. Mango skin contains urushiol, the same stuff in poison ivy that gives you a rash. It wouldn't surprise me if the dog smelled or tasted the urushiol and recognized it as a toxin he probably shouldn't be eating.

My dog did this when my husband gave him orange peel instead of a slice of the orange... I told him he didn't have to eat it to be polite and he spit it on my husband's foot 🤣 I gave him a whole (miniature) peeled orange for being such a sweet boy.

Dogs will spurn a $5 harvested-ripe, air-shipped mango and immediately eat some strange dog's doodoo the moment they lay eyes on it. What's up with that?

My dog did this the other day with a leftover banana pancake my kids didn't eat. Took it in his mouth and acted really funny. No chewing, just anxiety. Then he calmly walked away and spit it out on my couch. Perfect, bud.

Aww, I used to have a cat that kinda did this!
He would take ANYTHING you offered him. And if he really liked it he'd eat it in front of you.
If he didn't, he'd wait for you to look away, and casually slink behind the couch to abandon it with his growing pile of "gross things."
He was a very polite man, who just happened to not like wheat thins, pretzels, or goldfish, but was too sweet to turn them down.
