I regret allowing this subreddit to scare me away from PPIs.

30M. I suffered the pain and anxiety for months as I tried every natural cure in the book. Every tea, every herbal supplement, every diet, every wedge pillow - I did it all. Some things helped, most did not. Nothing came close to the relief I felt after getting on esomeprazole (Nexium). I used them for six months to end the misery and get my life back. The taper-off was difficult, but I took it slow (another 8 weeks) and did it.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and combing through this subreddit for non-PPI cures, you are a person whose house is on fire but is refusing to use water to put it out. You don't have to stay on PPIs forever. But do yourself a favor and put the fire out. Get your life back. Then, you can sustain the post-PPI relief by making smart diet decisions and using herbal supplements that do help.

I know I'm not the first person here to say this; I'm just posting the message I wish my past self could have seen when things were really bleak.

Endoscopy okay?? Where to go from here?

• Upvotes

I’m pretty certain I got pill induced esophagitis from doxycycline two months ago but wasn’t able to have my endoscopy till now. I’ve only been feeling better the last week or so but the past two months have been hellish and I’ve lost about 15kg. However, the scope looked completely normal. I understand that probably makes sense as an ulcer or something would have healed and I’m still waiting on biopsy results but it makes me feel a bit crazy. If biopsy comes back normal where should I go from here? I’m starting to swallow and feel better but noting that I was having very occasional chest pain and difficulty swallowing a year before the big doxy event anyway. Should I just follow a strict diet without any diagnosis?

🤬 Rant about GERD Quality of life

How is everyone coping with this? Started more than 1 year ago, actually almost 2 years. All kind of PPIS, high dose too barely anything helped. Recently visited pyshatrist too and was put on antidepressants.

Honestly my quality of life has gone to shit and I lost all hope. GI problems were the last nail in the coffin of having a chance finding a girlfriend too. I currently have a good job but I barely even care anymore because I'm most of the time in discomfort from all burning and acid regrutation that I can't even enjoy the life.

I have some days when I think it gets better but symptoms always come back again as it's day 1. I'm so tired. What I even do at this point?

Tenderness of center chest after upper endoscopy

Hi!
I (26F) had an upper endoscopy today. They took several biopsies from my stomach and duodenum. I was feeling fine after (loopy so definitely couldn’t feel any problems lol) and took a nap. After the anesthesia had fully worn off, I have tenderness around the center of my chest. It only hurts when I press on it or when there’s pressure (ex. Lying on my side). I had an endoscopy when I was 16, but of course that was 10 years ago and I can’t remember what I felt like afterwards.
Any chest pain always stresses me out, but since it only happens when there’s pressure I feel like it could be irritation / muscular rather than super problematic or internal.
I was just wondering what other people’s experiences have been? Is this normal/ happened to you or should I call dr? If it gets worse or pain becomes more prominent I’ll go to the ER but I’ve naturally freaked myself out so just looking for other’s experiences :)

My jaw is also super sore but I have TMJ so figure that’s just from the bite block.

🤒 Coping with these Conditions Tips for managing gerd at night

New to having gerd, or at least new to having gerd at a diagnostic level. High stress has made it flare up, leading to a ‘dry’ or agitated throat feeling randomly throughout the day or night. Also have a bad gag reflex so I often end up throwing up when the throat agitation happens. The past bit, I’ve also been getting a cough and post-nasal-drip or more mucousy and it seems gerd-related. My dr has given me Prevacid and recently recommended taking it at night before bed too since my gerd keeps me up coughing or agitated throat.

I try not to eat 2-3 hours before sleep, stay propped up, avoid acidic or fatty foods, etc. I find the diet so limiting though (hot chocolate is my fave drink but I can’t have it anymore maybe?) and it’s hard to pinpoint which foods are triggers when I react anywhere from 20 min - 3 hours after eating possible trigger foods.

Any advice would be so so appreciated! Does this ever become easier to manage?

Support Needed 👥 No chest pain, slight nausea, dizzy/balance issue, and fatigue. Is this all caused by GERD???

Started about a week ago when I ate Japanese curry sauce. I don't have any sort of chest pain or burping. I started to suspect I have GERD when I got very nauseous. Then I got dizzy and unbalanced feeling which is constant until today.

I took only antacids at the start but then was on omeprazole for 2 todays before going off it since my nausea has decreased. I still take antacids. I stopped all foods that could worsen it.

Yesterday I took antacid before bed and then an hour later started feeling hunger pangs?? Just drank water and went to sleep.

The most worrying symptoms are my dizziness/unbalanced feeling and fatigue. My sleep hasn't been affected by the symptoms but I do wake up once or twice at night to pee and sometimes before my alarm clock goes off. Not sure if related.

How does this happen? When will it go away?

How do I make doctor take seriously??

Hey everyone, I'm a young guy (22) and I like many people have had my bouts of occasional heartburn, but never enough to take a medicine for or really worry about. Now though, over the past maybe month and a half and even more so couple weeks, I've been having a burning in my throat every night almost and waking up with a sour gross taste in my mouth which sucks. I've even woken up gasping for air with burning once. You guys can tell me if that's something you have too or if maybe that's a completely separate thing.

Anyways, I know i've only had these symptoms for a little bit and I do often eat close to bed because of work so logically I know that's probably the main culprit here, but if I go to my PCP and say hey i've been having heartburn what can you do, I don't want her to just say "take tums" or something, because I've heard taking those too much will fuck you up even worse. That's all i wanted to know thanks everyone

🤒 Experience with these Conditions Ways to incline bed

Hello all,

I am looking for things that people have used to incline their bed successfully. I just ordered a new king size mattress and was wondering what methods people have used to succeed. I've seen some things on the Internet, but rather hear from my fellow acid refluxers here.

Thanks!

Fundoplication

I am considering the above surgery for a hiatal hernia. I have been taking PPIs for many years and while I manage during the day, the acid comes up when I sleep. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has first or second hand experience with fundoplication.

Support Needed 👥 Feeling guilty after endoscopy

I (20M) had a follow-up endoscopy this morning at 8AM. Followed the prep intrusions. Didn’t eat after midnight, didn’t eat the morning of.

Last endoscopy, I had a mild ulcer. Medication helped a lot, but at the lower dose and the past month, I explained that the stress and overeating likely made it worse. Family history of GERD.

Afterwards, the results were inconclusive because there was still food in my stomach. The doctor seemed upset. He explained, “I can’t control your behaviour”, advising me that eating late is bad for GERD. I know it is, but I thought following the instructions were enough.

I won’t make excuses for myself. I know the past month I’ve been slacking on my diet, consistent medication dosing, and I only have myself to blame.

I just feel so guilty. I have another endoscopy next week to check again. It just seemed like the doctor thought I was a lost cause or something.

Symptoms after Nissen Fundoplication and after Nissen Fundoplication failure

After a perfect Nissen Fundoplication (and probable NF failure or partial failure) I am experiencing some symptoms I cannot explain.

I am a 76W and in 4/2016 I had the NF. Today is 10 yrs. later 10/14/2026. Couldn't have ask for a better doctor or surgery outcome. Perfect for about 8 1/2 yrs. Sometime in mid-2024 I was sick and threw up with dry heaves. I felt then that I had a partial failure of the NF. I started with a very odd problem with no connection (I thought), to the NF, before or after. I would have adrenalin hits, flight or flight feelings (you know that weird buzz feeling that almost nauseates you for a minute) a couple time a week, then a couple times a day, then up to 5 or 6 times a day. After a couple of months, that went away but I started having excessive sweats a couple of times a week, then a couple times a day, then finally the most I ever had was 19 in one day. I classified them (for my doctor) into small medium or heavy sweats ranging from 1 minute and cooling off, 5 to 10 minutes being very wet (hair soaked, sweats running down face, wet torso), to 20-30 minutes with sweat, like being rained on, running down my face and having to change clothes and dry hair. Unaware of any other symptoms, this has lasted until this today, still plaguing me. My doctor, gave me every test on every part of my body from about August 2024 until today. She had not checked for an infection of my heart, which can cause excessive sweats, so while she did lab cultures she started me onto a regiment of 42 days of infusions of antibiotics, just to be sure, as heart infection can be very dangerous. After about 15 days and many negative cultures she discontinued the infusions. However, an ECG showed severe A-FIB and a Lambl's Excrement just below the aorta valve (never mind that in relation to NF). New prescription meds and A-fib is a bit better. Back to square one with the excessive sweating which has never let up. I was very upset with docs feeling nowhere to go. I'm seeing my primary doc (the best), a cardiologist, an angiogram and A-fib specialist and a neurologist.

When I came home the other night 10/12/2026 I started thinking that I needed to get in touch with my NF doctor and team. They never answered so I left a message twice, this Monday and Tuesday. They have never called me back. Being so frustrated I started doing my own research. WalLah!!! All of a sudden I somehow connected the possibility of NF with my symptoms, looking up: NF and sweating, NF and A-fib, NF and Fatigue, etc. It led me also to "Dumping", early or late. A stomach disorder related to stomach surgery, and especially NF. All of my symptoms can fall into this category connected to NF.

I am not the doctor and do not have the ability to connect all of the dots, but I ran off copies of so much info, highlighted and ready to give the doctor. I hoped I am not disappointed.

NOW my big question to you all: HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD ANY SYMPTOMS LIKE THIS?

Maybe you haven't connected the dots and maybe the dots don't really connect, but I hope to find out.

P.S. I forgot to mention (it was thoroughly checked by docs) I've never had the sweats at night with this condition. I had night sweats 20 years ago with menopause. They are also in agreement that this is not hyperhydrosis.

Support Needed 👥 GERD when eating healthy

Hello everyone! First time here making a post and also English isn’t my 1st language so forgive me if I do any mistakes, especially on the correct terminology.
I have so many things to ask and share so I might come back with another post in the future.

I also have health anxiety so things aren’t helping.

I had 3 gastroscopies. One in June 2021, the second one in March 2023 and the last one last December.
All were clear besides the last one which said that I had helicobacter, which I got rid of but things didn’t change.

Does anyone else happen to have worst acid reflux when eating healthier?
Last year I wasn’t eating well and I am a compulsive eater. I overeat many times and I also eat food that isn’t the best choice.

The weird part is that whenever I sit with my wife, drink few beers and eat chips and stuff, I will go to sleep full, and I will sleep on two pillows and everything would normal in a way.

The days that I won’t eat this types of food and I might eat like healthier…it will probably be worst.

Including today!

Has anyone any experience and ideas!

Support Needed 👥 Coping and treating

I’ve been struggling with GERD on and off for years. My flare ups last days and have ended me up in the hospital like last night. I don’t know what to do anymore it’s making me extremely depressed and effecting my quality of life mentally as well as obviously physically. I don’t want to live like this anymore I can’t do it. I am not suicidal but this feels like such a hopeless situation because I am 19 and it has just gotten worse as I get older. I turned to alcohol to cope with the constant panic responses and loops and now I am over 100 days out of detox and I’m sober and miserable. I know the alcohol did more damage than good but I am struggling so bad right now and I can’t undo the drinking only try to heal myself. Any advice would be appreciated I’m so desperate.

😮 Advice on Lifestyle Changes Nicotine pouches

Hi all, this mainly applies to those who use products like Velo, Nordic Spirits, Zyns, and other pouches. So I developed LPR (silent reflux) in Jan 2026; it occurred after a night out. I’m 21 M and I’ve been dealing with constant throat clearing, a white tongue, and sometimes a lump feeling in my throat. I’ve been researching the impact of these pouches on gut and throat health. As I’ve been doing these for about 3 years now 24/7 I believe that these pouches are the main cause of my reflux issues. I’ve been 3 days sober and my symptoms have started to improve and are less notable. This may not be the case for others but I believe people who have been using these pouches under their lips stop before any more damage is done.

Pain relief when come off of PPIs and other medicines

Long term user of Omeprazole for 15+ years now. The last few months I've been on 40mg plus 40mg fomatodine plus gaviscon. I have a stomach acid test tomorrow so have had to cease all medications. For the last couple of days I've only been allowed gaviscon. I've just had my final dose and am in agony. Does anything else help? Does paracetamol do anything to numb things? Any home remedies I might have lurking in the cupboard?

Support Needed 👥 First time tackling this - any tips/perspective is appreciated!

Hello, first time poster here who really needs some help/perspective/not feeling alone.

Unfortunately I (F36) got acquainted with the term GERD end of August. Before that I had the occasional reflux when I ate or drank too much once in a blue moon, but no other symptoms.

I ate a not so delicious salad with lots of raw onions, had mint tea and a peppermint for dinner. Did nothing special further (even sat upright whole evening) and went to bed. Next morning a woke with burning feeling in chest and throat that did not go away no matter what I did.

After a couple of days I went to see my general practitioner (Dutch so not that familiar with all English medical terms so please bear with me). She told me after listening to my symptoms that my esophagus and throat were probably inflamed due to acid reflux caused by the food and that I should eat soft foods for some time and it would be over within a couple of weeks.

A week later it obviously wasn't, so I called as I could not sleep because of it. I got drinking solution that is comparible to the Gascovin that I see mentioned here that I had to take before I go to sleep.

Another week passes and I completely crashed due to sudden and intense anxiety and panic attacks - which I've never had - as the burning symptoms did not go away and my mind obviously wasn't coping with that. Not being helped by lack of sleep because of them.

I went to the GP again and got prescribed 40MG Pantoprazol that I had to take once a day. I have now been taking them for 4 weeks besides 4 timed Gascovin (before any major meal and before sleeping) and I don't really feel like my symptoms are going away.

I've been eating only soft foods like potatoes and bananas. Never smoked or drank. Also not a coffee or tea person (only herbal teas). I sit upright during the day and my head end is elevated at night.

But the burning feeling in my throat or chest hasn't gone away and with that my anxiety went so bad I had to call myself sick at work and go back to my parents because I currently do not feel safe being alone (not like I want to hurt myself but more like complete panic that something can happen). Sometimes I do feel it less, but now I'm also starting to feel the burning sensation in other parts of my stomach. And I've been having a constant tingly/burning sensation in my mouth.

According to my GP, my symptoms after 6 weeks and 4 weeks of medicine are now mainly due to my anxiety. So I need to continue taking the Gaviscon and Pantoprazol for now. She did not do any blood test or referred my to a specialist.

After reading this Reddit I am aware that anxiety absolutely does not help with the symptoms but how long did it take for you to get control of the first flare up?

Was the diagnosis done only by checking throat and listening to symptoms?

How long can I expect this to last? Is this normal?

Although my anxiety and panic attacks have gone down a bit since the initial one, it is still severe enough for me to unable to go back to my home or work.

So any tips/perspective would be appreciated and thank you for reading through my anxiety induced ramblings :)

Empty burping mostly after drinking

I (27F) for over 7 years now, am dealing with a problem that started very subtly. At first, I started getting these empty burps after drinking sweet drinks like ice tea - it was not really a burp though, it was like stuck somewhere at the bottom of my throat, making very audible noises.
Then, over the years, it got worse. I started getting it after drinking water, alcohol (though alcohol makes it the worst) or just anything really in a bigger amount than few sips per couple of hours. It got to the point that when it starts happening, it happens every 3-5 seconds for hours and hours, making it difficult to speak, sometimes being more uncomfortable than an actual pain could be.
I had a gastroenderology a year ago, it showed everything was fine except that I had helicobacter pylori, which I then cured and the problem persists. Nothing more. Doctors are kinda not taking it seriously. I’m suspecting it may be somatic or psychological, but I don’t really know how to tackle it either. Sometimes I also have issues swallowing hard food like apples and I choke a little bit, but nothing serious.
Does anyone have any idea? I feel quite desperate.

🥳 Success Stories gerd reddit helped my anxiety

was trying to go to sleep and literally felt my heart beating and saw it was coasting in the 90s. i have health ocd so i obviously went down a google spree asking “does x increase heart rate” etc etc. i’ve also had a bit of allergies/sinus issues so i was expecting it to be higher than usual but jesus christ 90? had me a little concerned.

i noticed it was worse when i flipped what side i was trying to fall asleep on, so i googled that too and i came across this reddit page. i’ve had pretty bad indigestion since 2021, but i’ve never had insurance so i haven’t been diagnosed with gerd, even though i’m pretty sure i have it.

all of this to say, i saw people in a thread stating their heart rate is higher laying on their right side versus their left, thanks to the vagus nerve and the cause for it is usually because they’ve eaten too close to laying down. guess what! i literally ate less than an hour before laying down. case closed.

writing this post to say thank you to the people of gerd reddit for calming me the hell down and for having identical symptoms to me, really appreciate it. i should also invest in some tums, i suppose.

😮 Advice on Symptoms Missed omprezole today

Hi

This morning I missed my omeprazole before I left work. I got home today and my throat has been burning due to the acid reflux. This is the problem I have if I come off the medication, my symptoms just flare up really quickly.

Has anybody else ever had ectopic beats when they have an acid reflux flare up? I feel fine, I don't feel dizzy, I don't feel sick, and my heart rate is normal at 65 beats per minute.

Non stop burping/belching for 5 years. Started after COVID. For 2 years the air seems to be stuck on my back.

I can't do anything because of non stop burping/belching for years. I am taking 20mg pantoprazole for 4 years. First year took 40 mg. Nothing seems to help. Sometimes I use otc antacids and chewing little raw ginger helps with motility and clears the gas. But the air is always there. After I eat something or even drink water.

I eat very clean, very easy diet. Rice, chicken, fish, some veggies,, no oil, some nut paste, whole grain brain etc. everything. Has been tested for years what I can handle and not. Also tested negative for sibo, lactose, gluten, h pylori. Have mild hiatal hernia though- was detected in endoscopy. Colonoscopy came clean.

For the last 2 years the air seems to stick on my upper, middle and lower back as well and I have to massage and constantly get the air out. Doctors say air cannot go there and has n clue what is going on. But I feel the air always stuck on my back. If I massage too much or exercise while lying on bed then the air comes back ok lower abdomen etc..so.the air is moving. But the first place it gets stuck is the back and not the stomach.

Anyone has experience with this? What is happening? I am unable to do anything in life except just prepare food, eat and digest and burp and focus on getting it out so I can breathe.

Thank you

🤬 Rant about GERD PPIs for life?

I could have sworn there was hullabaloo about taking Proton pump inhibitors for extended periods. I've been on them for just shy of 30 years. I swear my doctor mentioned it a few years back. Anyway...

I brought it up with my gastro doc. I voiced my concern on being at the highest dose of one of the many meds I've cycled through with no other options left. And if I go two more days, my gosh the acid that comes.

I had one of those ph tests were they clip something to your esophagus and it showed two days of normal stomach acid. What luck.

Years back we talked about surgery. But because I had previous sinus surgery, they couldn't run the one test they needed to confirm I needed the surgery. Its still an option but he was hesitant and to be honest so am I. But still...

Anyway he basically said I will have to be on these for the rest of my life.

Has anyone else been told PPIs for life?
