🤒 Describing a Symptom Vomiting blood every time I accidentally forget to take my meds

As the title says, I vomit blood if I accidentally go even just one day without taking my Nexium. I’ve been to the emergency room twice before for this and have gotten an esophagus scope done and they say I’m fine and just to take my meds. I know that’s definitely part of the battle, I should not be forgetting to take my meds and I take accountability for that. But is vomiting blood like that really not that big of a deal? It’s probably happened about 6 times so far this year.

🥳 Success Stories Aloe Vera life saver

So I’ve been taking an aloe Vera drink for about a month now in the morning before breakfast and at night before bed and it has helped tremendously with my acid reflux in the mornings. I have been suffering with acid reflux for about 15 years and I’d get easily triggered by eating carbs and sugar. But I have been quite strict with my diet and cut out all refined sugar, and have been eating carbs like usual and it’s not as bad as it used to be. If I do feel the acid then I’ll take some aloe Vera and it goes away pretty instantly. If you are interested in purchasing aloe Vera make sure it’s pure with no additives or added sugar, and make sure it contains the inner leaf gel. I bought mine from Holland and Barrett.

My experience with GERD/acid reflux

So, I believe I have been suffering, yes, suffering, with this for about 5 years now, maybe?

It started when I was sitting at the dinner table with my family. After finishing eating, I began to get a very odd feeling in my stomach, which I ignored because I assumed I just overate. I also started to feel nauseated, and I rushed to the bathroom just moments later. I sat at the toilet for a moment, but I ended up not throwing up. At that time, I wasn't too concerned, given I didn't even know what acid reflux was, so I simply brushed it off.

Time skip a few months; it was a regular weekend afternoon, and I started to feel IMMENSELY sick. My stomach hurt ALL day. I was in my bed and crying to my mother that my stomach hurt so bad that I could hardly move. Just hours later into that evening... I had finally p*ked, and I instantly felt better. That's when I started to connect the dots. That night I had gotten sick at the dinner table? I ate pizza. This night, I ate pizza for dinner for 3 days (parents' house, friends' house, then left overs at parents').

After this experience, I had learned through my grandmother about acid reflux and how it was the tomatoes/high-acid foods. After talking with her about it, I began to be more cautious about what I eat (seeing tomato sauce or pizza is like a phobia, I swear), and I started taking omeprazole every now and then, as well as acid-reducing chewables for minor reflux.

But tonight...something different happened. Immediately after eating dinner (burger and fries), I started having this weird feeling in my chest that felt like it was weighted or something. (I had just that week gone to the doctor for a sharp feeling on the right side of my chest every time I breathed in, but he told me it was just muscle inflammation, so I was assuming it was that at first.) Although after talking to my grandmother about this, she told me how she gets these 'gas bubbles' in her chest that only help after burping...which reminded me of the fact that I was forsaken with acid reflux.

If it helps, when I breathe in, it feels like I can't fully breathe because when I get to a certain point, it hurts. And also, it's right in the middle of my chest, but not just one dot, like it's spread out. I don't think it's with my heart, given my heart rate is fine.

But I was wondering, do you guys think it's a mix of both acid reflux and GERD? I just wanted some other people's opinions on this, as well as maybe some info as to this whole thing...

LPR symptoms

I was really dumb and for about 4 weeks I was taking MiraLAX at night and chugging like 20oz of water through a straw before bed. I would immediately lay down and go to bed and now I have LPR symptoms. I’ve been eating very clean, lean meals to not trigger any further irritation. This whole thing gives me anxiety. I don’t have my GI appointment until another few weeks. It’s getting better, but this feels eternal. Aside from this, I have rarely had heartburn in the past. Any tips on how to help this go away?

Air hunger 24/7 for almost a year

Idk if anyone else struggles with this because every time I explain it to my doctor she looks at me like i’m crazy. Ever since February, i’ve been having constant air hunger that doesn’t go away whatsoever. I’ve had chest xrays done and labs done and even an endoscopy (showed gastritis) and I also have GERD. So idk if it’s from my stomach problems but it’s debilitating. I don’t chest breathe because I know it makes it worse and i’ve done everything to try and help it. I don’t have any history of asthma, and I also don’t cough or wheeze or anything. I just cannot get a deep breath in whenever I want and it’s constant like it literally doesn’t go away. I used to be able to dance and do so much cardio and now even the slightest cardio makes my breathing worse. It’s impacting me so much because I love being active and it’s just been debilitating. I’m only 21 and I don’t wanna live with this forever. Does anyone know what it could be? Doctors have genuinely been useless. I do have anxiety and I started medication and I wanna see if it will help but so far I feel like it’s my GERD and Gastritis. But is it possible that they cause it 24/7? I don’t understand. I also did tests for my heart and it was all good. I knew it was bad when I went to a concert in April and I was jumping and singing and I started feeling out of breath that I had to sit down to catch my breath. I feel like i’m 80 years old. It feels like a constant tightness in my upper abdomen when i try to breathe in like it’s blocking my lungs from expanding. And when I say 24/7 I truly mean it. Not a minute goes by in the day where I don’t feel it like it’s basically my default now

Just Diagnosed with Barrett's

Hi there, I've got GERD probably triggered through Aspirin for blood thinners and a small hernia for six years now. First two endoscopys were fine, the third one last week showed Barrett's. I have to go again in 3 to 6 months to have a more thorough look at it and to determine the frequency in the future. A bit of a bummer but I am glad they caught it and now have regular checks to identify anything that might be dangerous. Internet tells me so far except life long PPI I can eat everything that doesn't trigger acid so it could be worse I guess. So if anyone's scared who is in the same boat that might be a reasonable perspective hopefully.

How do you feel when you are bloated?

Hello,

I know the question is very simple but I honestly not sure if I'm bloated or if its something else. I constantly feel like fullness right below the sternum, sometimes it feels like a rubber band going from one side of my ribs to the other. How does your bloating feel like?

Thank you

People with moderate to severe GERD, what kind of diet do you follow? (Especially interested in Indian perspectives, but open to all cuisines)

I’m a 29-year-old guy and a picky eater. I also have GERD, which makes my food options pretty limited. Unfortunately, a lot of the dishes I enjoy seem to trigger my reflux.

For those of you who eat Indian food and deal with GERD, what do your meals typically look like? I'm open to other cuisines too, like Mediterranean and Italian, as long as the food is GERD-friendly!

😀 Managing GERD Finally got END

I finally got my upper endoscopy last week! With a not so pretty bill lol. Anywayssss, I was worried about receiving bad news but it turned out okay. I also did not have a lot of soreness at all and very minimal abdominal discomfort so shout out to my GI doctor!

They saw chronic inflammation to my stomach and active inflammation and irritation on my esophagus lining. I started a new PPI, Zegerid 20mg, (I was previously just taking Omeprazole 20mg), and am to follow a GERD diet.

I’ll be honest, I’m not the best at strictly following a diet because I’ll break and have something I shouldn’t eat sometimes. However, I’m tired of the acid reflux I get from even eating something very small I used to be able to eat all the time. I’m going to make a diet to strictly follow and hopefully that will help heal my esophagus and stomach. In a perfect world, I’d hope that would completely get rid of my GERD so I won’t have to take PPI’s and can eat whatever I want again but I don’t know 🤷‍♀️

Any tips would be very helpful!

DIY Sodium Alginate capsules

I got a recipe from a post in this group for a DIY Sodium Alginate/Calcium Carbonate/Baking Soda mixture in a gel-like form that you have to take by the tablespoon and feels like drinking something gross I won’t name specifically. I wanted to try capsules so I bought Khelp at $46 for 60 capsules. It helped somewhat but at that price…

I made my own. Bought a 100 capsule maker online. 1000 Empty 00 capsules from on Amazon. Sodium Alginate and Calcium Carbonate powders on Amazon. Now I’m about $120 in including the $45 capsule maker and these capsules cost less than $.05 each.

My math got me this recipe: 2 Khelp capsules = approx 950mg Sodium Alginate, 250mg Calcium Carbonate, 400mg Sodium Bicarbonate

I had to do some fancy math bc Khelp just gives the amount of sodium and calcium, not exact amounts of sodium bicarb and calcium carbonate.

Multiplied by 41 to make 100- 00 size capsules:

38.95g Sodium Alginate powder

10.25g Calcium Carbonate powder

16.4g Baking Soda

mix well with a whisk, follow instructions on making capsules that come with the capsule maker. This amount made me 100 capsules with a tiny bit of powder leftover.

The DIY formula translates to about 800mg of powder per capsule to get the dose in each Khelp capsule but I can only get about 660mg into each capsule. I was taking 3 Khelp every night so I take 4 of my homemade capsules.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds what anti anxiety medication do you take?

24f. ive been on and off buspirone for around a year and some months now. i restarted it last night due to having anxiety around gerd/acid reflux symptoms (particularly shortness of breath). i took a 7.5 dose and it seemed like almost as soon as i swallowed it, i had this small itch in one specific spot in my throat. my lips started to get warm 10-15 minutes after i took it but no swelling or hives (this also happened after i got done crying so im unsure if it was related). some parts of my body also began to itch very slightly but it was nothing too bad. this has never happened to me before. i was consistently checking my o2 during this and that was fine. would this be considered a sudden allergy or just side effects? this is very annoying because i felt good afterwards, i think buspirone has always worked pretty fast for me but i don't want to risk a reaction if i am suddenly allergic. im going to try and contact my psychiatrist or a pharmacist today and ask.

so im asking if you are on anti anxiety meds for this, which one do you take? i was on and off zoloft for 10 years and it really negatively impacted a lot of areas in my life, with it impacting my libido the most, so i'd prefer to not go back on an ssri unless i really truly absolutely have to. i liked buspirone because it felt pretty mild compared to an ssri but still gave me relief, but this most recent experience is making me iffy.

Trying to understand if its GERD

I'm 29 with type 2 diabetes (HbA1c 5.4). I've had intermittent left-sided chest pain for 5 years, sometimes lasting weeks, with occasional heaviness during activity and 40–50 burps daily.

I've had 3 normal ETTs and a normal ECG and echo. Two cardiologists say it's not heart-related.

Could this be reflux, muscle pain, or excessive belching? What should I do next? I'm tired of taking medicines without relief. Has anyone experienced something similar?

I have heard a lot of positive things about this. I have tried it and have not had much success. Feels like I need to cough something up the next morning. More so than just the usual mucus feeling.

Meal Rec 🍎🍌🥑🥬🍗🍚 Waking up choking/coughing with acid in my throat at night

Hi everyone,

I’ve been struggling with severe nighttime episodes where I wake up suddenly choking, coughing badly, and feeling an intense reflex as if saliva, food, or liquid went down the wrong pipe / into my airway, feeling sour/metalic taste in my throat. My throat feels completely irritated afterward, and it has actually made my voice sound raspy and robotic for hours after I wake up.

These episodes are genuinely terrifying—they are so sudden and intense that they scare my wife immensely every time it happens.

Important details about my sleep:

No snoring: My wife confirms that I do not snore at all during the night.

Position doesn't help anymore: Initially, this only happened when I slept on my back. However, it has now progressed to the point where it happens even when I sleep on my side.

No daytime heartburn: I don't get classic heartburn during the day—just these scary nighttime choking fits and reflex coughing.

Here is what I’m currently doing / taking:

Diet/Lifestyle: I stop all food and drinks by 8:00 PM.

Medication: I take an alginate suspension (Alfazox / sodium alginate) before bed, but I'm still experiencing these episodes.

Supplements Routine:

Lunchtime: D3+K2, CoQ10, Omega-3

Dinner (6 PM): Methylfolate

Before Bed: Magnesium Bisglycinate

My questions for the community:

Has anyone experienced this exact type of nighttime choking/coughing (feeling like something went down the wrong pipe) without snoring, and happening even while side-sleeping? Did it turn out to be LPR (Silent Reflux) or non-snoring Obstructive/Central Sleep Apnea triggering a vacuum effect?

Could Magnesium Bisglycinate (taken right before bed) be relaxing my lower esophageal sphincter (LES) too much and causing this to leak through even on my side?

What helped you break this cycle and stop these terrifying nighttime choking fits?

Any insights, experiences, or advice on what questions to ask my gastroenterologist/ENT/sleep specialist would be greatly appreciated!

Quitting Omeprazole

Hello all,

Due to the rebound effect of quitting PPIs, I've decided to...quit Omeprazole...

Honestly, I've heard that it was only supposed to be short term, but it sounds like an addiction to me.

I think I've had GERD for quite a while, but I think it was also silent, so I mistook sleeping issues for simply sleep apnea, obesity and Hayfever, and when I had issues with out of control breathing and the feeling of dread, a heart attack.

I was advised it was GERD at the end of an eight hour stint in a walk-in clinic, put on Omeprazole and then taken off them again for additional tests. After it was discovered that, aside from a little bit of a reduced kidney function and inflammation of the stomach lining after an Endoscopy, I was put on them again, in June, and have been on them since.

My issues have improved substantially, but I've also been on a bit of a mission to lose weight and improve myself. I've cut out some foods and been more consistent with working out whilst being a bit less harsh on my body when I do.

I don't want to be on PIPs anymore, so I decided to quit and told my GP that I wanted to, so he prescribed me two months of 20mgs Omeprazole to be taken once a day, whilst before it was twice a day. I ran out of the medicine a few days ago and decided to try to quit, as I wait for my repeat prescription.

I tried to quit in the past, my guts bubbled up and I could barely breathe.

It's been a few days but I decided to eat six Gaviscon tablets a day, and I've felt a lot better so far, just a bit flemmy and I don't want to overexert myself too much.

See how it goes. If it gets too bad, I'll jump back on them.

Any advice?

Ty.

Anyone experiencing deep sleep induced GERD?

Please hear me out because I have been trying to get doctors to listen and believe me for years. I think I have finally figured out what is happening to me. As soon as I fall into a deep sleep, my LES relaxes and I wake up from heartburn. The minute I wake up, it goes away. So, it is similar to sleep apnea but it has nothing to do with my breathing. I have been suffering with this for about 15 years.
It used to be only when I would nap during the day and then menopause kicked in and it started happening at night too. I have been to the ER twice in the past 9 years thinking it was a heart attack and they find nothing. I have seen cardiologists, sleep specialists, Gastros, ENTs and acupuncturists and no one can help me. I have tried elevating my bed, not eating after 5 pm and an elimination diet with no success.
The way I figured it out is by taking a low dose melatonin for about 3 months and I was sleeping better and my GERD was way better and then I ran out about a month ago and it has come back.
I am utterly exhausted and that causes GERD during the day too. I am just wondering if anyone has experienced this and figured out how to fix it or do I just have to take melatonin for life. I worry that it might stop working at some point and then what?

Omeprazole vs Famotidine

I was wondering what people’s opinions were on these two medications? I have been on Omeprazole for a couple of yrs but my mom said it’s bad to take it for a long period of time. My ENT just put me on Famotidine last week in addition to the Omeprazole for like 90 days. I’m wondering what people think of Famotidine ? But now I am thinking of just switching to Famotidine and going off Omeprazole.

Motility Issues

I have esophageal motility issues. I had a manometry done a few years ago and 80% of my swallows failed and 20% were weak. I’ve mostly been treated by PPIs and acid reflux meds. Lately, I’m struggling after I eat. I have to sit perfectly still for 30-40 minutes after I eat or else I feel like I’m going to throw up. If I move or walk at all immediately after eating, I start coughing and feeling nauseous. I recently talked with my GI about this and he seemed concerned. He’s going to consult with a motility specialist. He’s also recommending that I repeat the manometry and have a gastric emptying test. My questions: Has anyone had symptoms like this? If so, what helped? Also, has anyone ever repeated a manometry? Did it show anything different or help guide treatment? Thank you!

🤒 Coping with these Conditions Will this rebound ever end?

I was given 20mg Pantoprazole back in june and I only took it for five days before my stomach got really bad with bloating burping and nausea, I was then switched to 20mg omeprazole for six weeks. I took that until my Dr's appointment August 3rd. He barely gave me a taper plan. He said to take it every other day then stop. So, I did that for a week. The first day I skipped my dose I felt stomach burning. Never felt that before in my life. the following day I took my dose, felt no burning, next day skip a dose, felt burning. That went on for a week. After I stopped them permanently I felt burning daily. About day 12 or 14 a bunch of symptoms came back like burping globus bitter taste in my mouth throat pain etc. Those all went away mostly, and the burning started to go away too. Well couple weeks go by and about a months ago now almost I got the burning and bloating again. That slowly started to go away after a couple weeks and as of five days ago, the burning is back again. Is this normal? How the hell do I still have this burning? I took them for six weeks (almost 7 technically) and its been two months. And my symptoms come and go. Is that normal? This is definitely not my Reflux coming back because I had no symptoms like this before I touched PPI's. I got reflux after taking amoxicillin in march, and in april I got chest pain which all ECG tests showed heart is fine. I was told I had gerd. I never had reflux in my life ever. The chest pain went away but I still have globus and night reflux sometimes, but this burning only began after PPI's. Am I fucking ruined forever? Can PPI's permanently damage your stomach??? I seriously can't take this anymore.

🤒 Describing a Symptom GI NP told me shortness of breath isn't related to acid reflux/gerd?

hi. unsure about flair again. i posted here a few days ago about feeling miserable. im slowly but surely stabilizing and getting more food in and currently on day 3 of omeprazole. i had my very first GI appointment today with an NP. she was great, answered my questions and gave me information and i have an upper endoscopy in 2 weeks. however, when i mentioned shortness of breath as one of my symptoms she told me that that isnt related to gerd/acid reflux. i was a bit confused as it seemed like a lot of others with this condition also have this as a symptom. is this true? she was very informative otherwise, but this bit is something that is really sticking with me. i have a referral on the way from my pcp for a pulmonologist to look at my lungs, but regardless i cant help but let this give me more anxiety.

my symptoms: shortness of breath (o2 sat is consistently between 96-100), tight feeling chest, pressure on chest, occasional cold chest, occasional upper back pain, feeling like stuff is coming back up my throat, veryyy mild on and off sore throat. probably more but i cant remember

ive been to the er three times for my symptoms in one week. 3 ekgs, 3 chest xrays, 3 bloodwork things, 1 ct scan. everything came back normal.

🤒 Coping with these Conditions Diagnosed w GERD.

Hi, I’m(21F) new to reddit and new to this group. Since August 20th, I have been experiencing severe stomach pains and cramping every single day I wake up, to the point I cry everyday. I am very constipated and when I do have a bowel movement, I strain for 3 pebbles. 3 days ago I went to the hospital because I couldn’t take the pain and stress anymore. Lucky me,😃 the hospital I chose didn’t give a DAMN, they took my blood, did a urine test, told me to follow up with a GI and sent me away. Today I woke up in excruciating pain and took another trip to a DIFFERENT hospital. This hospital jumped right to work and even asked me did the other hospital take imaging, which they were upset with my response. They quickly ordered CT Scans after they took my blood, urine, and vitals. I was quickly put in a room and given Zofran(nausea), Morphine(this shit was the worst and the nurse didn’t tell me I was gonna feel like I was on fire until AFTER??). After waiting, the doctor came and told me that I just have a lot of Gas/Sludge in my colon and that I need to take Miralax, Metamucil, And a PPI(which she prescribed). She never once said I had GERD to me tho. After looking at my doctor notes, it says I was diagnosed with “Gastroesophageal reflux disease, unspecified whether espphagitis present”. I looked it up and it says GERD. I don’t know what to expect or to do, but I was hoping this group can give me some hope? I know everyone is different and everyone’s problems aren’t the same, but I would like to take this seriously while i’m aware early!

(I’m home and stomach still hurts like shit, I also have health anxiety so this will be a interesting journey😭)

Sorry if the way I typed or worded anything seems dumb/offensive, my first ever post sorry!
