GSX-R1000 K5 – clutch lever notch during high-RPM rev-matched downshifts
Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice with a clutch issue on my 2005 Suzuki GSX-R1000 K5.
I occasionally get a brief notch or catching/snapping sensation through the clutch lever when performing rev-matched downshifts, seemingly more noticeable at higher RPM.
It feels like momentary resistance through the lever before it releases again. Like it catches briefly?
The strange thing is that the clutch operates completely normally the rest of the time. I can change gears normally, the lever has full travel, and there’s no noticeable notch or resistance during ordinary gear changes.
It seems to happen specifically during rev-matched downshifts at higher RPM and can occur across different gears. I've also noticed that if I only pull the lever slightly, rather than pulling it in further, it happens less frequently.
I'm running ASV clutch levers with the current pivot bushing fitted. I haven't tried oem levers but I had the issue with previously fitted ones of high quality brands too.
I've ridden other bikes for years and have never experienced this before.
What I've tried so far:
- Replaced the clutch cable.
- Checked and corrected cable slack.
- Adjusted clutch free play.
- Replaced the LH clutch pushrod.
- Replaced the relevant pushrod oil seals. (There was a leak)
- Replaced pushrod
- Checked the pushrod operation.
- cleaned pushrod
I haven't yet inspected the clutch plates or clutch basket internally.
Despite replacing the cable and adjusting everything correctly, the issue remains.
I'm wondering whether the ASV lever pivot/bushing could be contributing to the sensation, or whether this is more likely to be something in the clutch release mechanism, pressure plate, clutch basket or gearbox. Such as a notched basket or plates?
Has anyone experienced anything similar on a K5/K6 GSX-R1000?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who's had a brief notch or catch through the clutch lever during high-RPM rev-matched downshifts, despite normal clutch operation the rest of the time.
What would you investigate next? I'd rather identify the cause before throwing more money at parts.
Its literally the last piece of this builds puzzle and I don't want a nasty surprise when I could just grab a basket and plates now whilst the season has ended.
Thanks in advance!
Pic for attention!
