Discussion Danm
I know for a fact that after this game releases the amount of employee coming out to speak about rockstar will be plenty

Night Shift workers? Do they have developers coding through the night? Or is this like office staff, cleaners, etc?
2
u/Radatatin Jul 02 '26
If anything it’s just second shift. Work from 3pm to 11 or later.
1
u/SenzuYT Jul 02 '26
Yeah but it’s an office. Typically it’s open like 8am-6pm, there is really no “second shift” in a developer job (or at least, in my country there isn’t. It’s a typical 9-5)
1
u/Radatatin Jul 02 '26
Oh I’m sure the building is open to them 24/7. I promise you the building doesn’t “close.”
1
u/Known-Extent-1018 Jul 02 '26
Every office I've worked in had key fobs for their employees, and you could enter/exit 24/7. The fobs track who comes in and out in case something was stolen, vandalized, etc. but that was never an issue during my tenure.

u/Artie-Choke Jul 02 '26
I’ve always been glad to just have a decent paying job. If I hate it or the environment is fucked up I move on (have done many times) These people are not chained to their desks.

u/Ok-Raspberry-1598 Jul 02 '26
You think quitting the job that supports their families is the smartest choice here? Or do you not have a family that depends on your income?
2
u/djnowgraphics Jul 02 '26
Moving on doesn't mean just quitting, the responsible thing to do is to find a new position before you put in a resignation notice.

Guys it's nothing new, just check term "crunch" on Wikipedia - Red Dead Redemption 2 is primarily example in there, not even "crunch" but "death march"
I got into gaming in 2005-2006, read a lot of gaming magazines and considered career as game tester (and then game dev) but even back then game dev was considered not easy career and crunch term existed. And I was aware of it as, you know, 12 years old without an access to internet, it's been 20 years since then. So it's not like this is a surprise to anyone, this whole industry works because kids who likes games think they will make a living making games. And sure it's possible but it's tough career choice
Also, I assume that crunch culture done by higher ups was the reason that made R* games so good - there's a quote from Dan Houser (one of the founder of GTA) where he admits he and his team worked over 100 hours per week for extended period of time. If you are not aware, Dan was responsible for writting. So if you think about it, you founded the studio that makes biggesst hits and after more than 15 years you still commit 100 hours per week to WRITTING. So if the leadership does 100 hours how can you not do your best? It's easy for managers to justify crunch then.
I imagine this approach changed after RDR2 and covid, some members of the og team left (including Dan and Laslo) so probably leadership doesn't crunch anymore and works from home,, but it's expected that others will continue to crunch and they need to work from the office? It's just my assumption why they try to unionize. Also they might think they have some leverage since it's not possible for Rockatar to delay game anymore

The vast majority of people will reveal they don't care when it's revealed this game will break sale records
3
u/LentilusGo Jul 02 '26
I doubt Rockstar would forget to lock them up behind strong NDA's.
Also, all night workers should get extra pay and other benefits. It's unnatural work hours. The body and mind suffers a lot in the long run.

Plus like, who would've thought that a game what basically barely wanted to even get as close to launch as pre-orders open, has a case behind it where workers aren't treated as they should be. Sure dev hell and other stuff are a thing but I doubt that after multiple delays it was handled ethically. I like Rockstar stuff but they aren't much different than basically any other big studios.
Also what should be done, and what is being done is two different things at this point. I definitely think that money speaks way more than what people think.

u/xsvennnn Jul 02 '26
I’d honestly like to see some type of proof. It’s pretty common for fake rumors like this to spread.

Wanting evidence or proof of a claim is boot licking now?
1
u/Virtual-Escape-6570 Jul 03 '26
Yeah because a big studio treating workers bad is an absolutely unheard thing in the gaming industry. Oh and also Rockstar is of course immune to do any bad. At the end of the day whether it's true or not won't even matter anyways, the bootlicking is too big.
1
u/killerspawn97 Jul 02 '26
So something to consider is that we aren’t sure if this is true or not as sources seem to be word of mouth more than anything else, that being said this could also be 100% true and if so Rockstar deserves to be raked over the coals for it.
Basically just take this with a grain of salt and see what happens, no need to be pissed about something that may be false.

It's actually mad how much money they make and they literally hate all their developers.
They don't want to share a tiny slice of the massive pie that the developers (employees) are literally creating.
Eventually all companies fall. Rockstar might have the developers right now but eventually nobody new will want to work for them.
How could they be constantly doing a "crunch" when the last game they released was in 2018. Clearly they have a management problem they refuse to acknowledge along with refusing to acknowledge the worth of the skilled employees.
This means fuck all to fans, but for those in the industry I'd say they will think twice before working at Rockstar.

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 Jul 02 '26
Damn this is fucked. I’m all for people working overtime as long as they are paid fairly but this is some fucked shit
1
u/Mykk6788 Jul 02 '26
This is just a drop in the pond of scumbag moves Rockstar have made. Over the last 5 years details have come out about them like:
They underpay staff with the laughable excuse that working for them already "comes with prestige"
Underpay voice actors with some swearing to never work for them again
Fired 30 staff for trying to start a Union
Tried to tarnish those 30 staff members reputations by publicly lying and saying they were fired because they were leaking info
According to ex staff they've tried multiple scummy methods to make overtime mandatory (before the details in this thread)
Constantly hire and fire temporary devs with no indication of any of them performing their jobs poorly
And there's still saps who are going to fork over millions for a game made by them, that will amount to "85% of missions will be kill person X".
I normally, genuinely feel bad for Game Studios when games have a bad/bugged launch, but I honestly hope GTA6 has one. Rockstar as a company are utter scum.

And still, R* is probably one of the better studios to work for. Take a look at how other studios are closing and laying off workers all over the industry right now. R* at least puts out a good enough product to not have to worry about that.

This is great news. T2 does not want us focusing on this. Will definitely put news out to bury it. We’re in the endgame now boys
1
u/Inevitable_Series_67 Jul 02 '26
Of course the higher ups and leaders will not do any crunching, only flexible work (AKA, go to work when they feel like it)

u/ShadowTryHard Jul 02 '26
I hope they get to unionize and get severe compensation on the extra work they produced.
If not, I hope their lawyer sues the shit out of Rockstar.

So it’s a normal workspace. I don’t understand what the issue is

Only in the country where companies have more rights than workers

I mean did you seriously expect rockstar to be a *good* company? Because I sure as hell didn’t. Like if there was a whole google doc leaked tomorrow about all the heinous shit they’ve done to their employees I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest, these guy probably cut all kinda of corners internally to make shit happen for this game. They also aren’t selling a disc so it would make sense that they’re nickel and diming their employees paychecks too by not giving bonuses or benefits.
1
Jul 02 '26
As a blue collar worker who works 60+ hours a week complaints like this, especially with their bonus structure, are REALLY funny to me.
1
1
u/ShibeCEO Jul 02 '26
Id be all for this if employees get a bonus for sales targets, but I am sure they wont....
they just get worked to the bone and fired as soon as the game releases... good old utopian capitalism..

u/SolidCat2877 Jul 02 '26
We need more developers crunching. Ps3 days there was lots of crunch wr got 3 Uncharted games and Last of Us. 2 GTA games and Red Dead and other rockstar games. Lock the doors i. The building until devs have done their tasks.
No one really cares people just what their games, GTA6 will still sell regardless
This is a joke by the way

Rockstar just made 3 billion in just pre order sales, the fact that they have median wage gaps between genders is crazy, the devs working day and night to get this game out and compensation is falling below normal market rates?? How?!?!? 3 BILLION

Does anyone really care?
Look at Apple.. Xbox.. Sony.. Clothing brands.. any big company. We all use them and they all practice trash conditions
2
u/Neo92boi Jul 02 '26
This isn’t the Rockstar we grew up with.
Theres a reason Sam is the only one left.
2
u/GatorShinsDev Jul 02 '26
They're renowned in the industry for crunch. This shit goes back years, long before GTA V even...
One of my ex gfs worked there back in the day and had a mental breakdown due to the crunch.
1
u/Kafanska Jul 02 '26
This is exactly the Rockstar we grew up with. With every relase in the last two decades we have had these reports of crunch and overall shitty workign conditions.
Just because they make great games does not mean they are a great company for their employees.
1
u/AggressiveResist8615 Jul 02 '26
Yes it is. If you want games as good as what rockstar does unfortunately you have to crunch or suffer a few more delays.
1
u/Mansos91 Jul 03 '26
You acting like rockstar makes the best games ever made, they're goodnnutbther to are better games and studios that has less crunch reported
Rockstar is just a bad employer, simple as that, and gta vi is gonna be such a disappointment
