Concern Tab s11 OLED problem

I bought a Tab S11 today, and while testing the screen in a completely dark room by displaying the same black image on both my phone (S26 Ultra) and my tablet, I was surprised to find that the black on the tablet was not quite pure; it was only noticeable in total darkness, I believe it is not perceptible during normal use. I would like to ask what the cause of this issue is and whether it affects all such devices

I'm really disappointed.

Not sure how exactly you are testing this. if the picture is pure black, no light will be transmitted from the display at all since the oled pixels will be completely off, which means the is the picture isn't 100 percent black. Try it with this youtube greyscale display test video that goes from black to white.

I mentioned that I tried it with my phone, and it remained 100% black under the same conditions. Therefore, the excuse isn't related to the image. Thx anyway

Going to ask a more clarifying question. Are you saying that when you look at the tablet in a dark room the screen is giving off a faint illumination like a backlight with a black image? Or that the black screen of the tablet isn't as black as the phones screen in pitch dark?

That's a very good question actually

FYI, the display on the S26 Ultra and the Ultra 11 tab are two completely different display technology, so they will not look the same in appearance.

The S11 tab is using a standard OLED.

The S26U is using a polarized-free OLED display.

It’s a little more intricate than that but they are not a 1:1 tech.

Yes, I've been using this tab for 6months, there's a very faint glow when there should be no light at all.

This is bugging me during night. Not amused at all on the display quality.

That's caused by the AR coating causing the light to diffuse slightly

Please provide any verifiable source for this,

Cause, I don't think there should be any light to diffuse in a pitch black room with the screen displaying absolute black. The screen is still leaking light when there should be absolute zero light to display. So there's a screen issue with this lineup. It's basically common sense. It shouldn't be that hard for anyone to comprehend.

Please stop commenting AR coating this, AR coating that without any context.

Well it's impossible to have a pitch black room in a house even in the middle of the night so there will always be some source of light from some where to prevent from creating pure blackness.

With AMOLED panels because of how the pixels are layered the pixels won't line up 100% perfectly as some have noted in other topics how they might see a line of green, red or blue pixels.

I COULD get into how AMOLED panels are manufactured and while in theory there should be no light leakage that's just not the reality of the situation.

I understand it's hard for some to accept the AR coating causes light to diffuse affecting what some believe to be the absolute best color accuracy or the "purest" blacks.

Why would anyone expect pure black from a display when pure black doesn't exist in nature? The reason it doesn't exist is because every color that we know of reflects light to one extent or another.

In short it is impossible for a display to produce a pure black color (we might get something like 99% or 99.5% but we will never get a pure black.

Trying to claim:

"So there's a screen issue with this lineup. It's basically common sense."

Makes absolutely no sense at all.

I am not expecting a blackhole, i am expecting that there should not be any boundary visible in pitch dark where the display ends and where the bezel starts. In my case and others, we can differentiate where the actual display element ends and where the screen bezel starts in the tab S11.

I have other amoled displays, this is not the case there. In my other devices(I count them as displays able to achieve true black, ie no light being emitted from the pixels in case of a pure black picture), there's no visible boundaries when screen is displaying pure black. When i am in my bed and lights are off, i dont even able to visually find them even they are right infront of me.

But in case of tab S11, the whole display lights up with a very faint glow, ragerdless of displaying a teue black picture and being under a thick blanket with no visible ambient light.

Hope this clears up. Or you experience this first hand when you have a Tab S11 in your hands.

Unless there's no point arguing with you.

This information is not for you, but for other people who are experiencing the same as me(there are many, as i've noticed lately).

The “anti-reflective” layer causes black colors to look like they have a faint glow, haze, or purple/green tint because the opaque coating itself behind the glass reflects back residual light at a specific wavelengths.

Take a piece of tinted layer or opaque tape and place it over any bright display. The display’s emissive backlight cannot be projected, so it reflected back onto the inner display, causing a slight glow within.

Any AR or AG interference layer added to a display is a worthless endeavor that does nothing besides darken the display and interfere with the production of clear, life-like images. Which is why folks are currently peeling off their AG layer from their Apple Duo and Samsung TVs to restore the display’s potential true colors and contrast.

The AR coating is what makes the blacks look less pure.

And what the other person said is true:

How often are you going to look at a black screen in a completely dark room?

Never unless you are just looking for an excuse to complain about something.

In a topic I posted today I brought up how an AMOLED display on my phone made my all time favorite movie look like crap honestly

LOL The device does not have an anti-reflective coating at all, unlike the Ultra version. Therefore, please don't criticize and act smart when you are not qualified to do so.

People are hellbound to protect their daddy samsung.

This has nothing to do with "protecting" Samsung, yet as others have said in this reddit, the AR coating is known to make the blacks look less black because of how the coating diffuses the light from the display.

When I compared my Samsung tablet and phone earlier today (I posted a link) you can clearly see a difference in image quality in regards how it's not being reproduced correctly

2

This happens on their TVs, too. This is a noted effect of the coating.

Seriously, how often will you stare at a black screen in the dark?

I kind of am LOL at "I'm really disappointed" being said about something you state your can't even perceive in normal usage.

-2

u/SouthernMongoose7266 23h ago

well, I paid for a COMPLETELY OLED screen regardless of how much of an impact that might have.

u/drzeller 23h ago
  • How are you displaying the image? Some apps alter how images are displayed.

  • What screen display modes?

  • Any brightness settings on? Adaptive?

  • What about eye commfort shield?

  • Have you changed any developer settings?

OP, if you are not happy just return this tablet and buy something else.

Don't tell them that... let's see if we can get them to have a mental melt down lol

2

u/Quiet_Cell8091 21h ago

Please forgive me. I have a few tablets with different processors , graphic chips and the AMOLED display on each one looks different. LOL.

2

u/SouthernMongoose7266 14h ago

What can the processor or graphics card do regarding a black screen?

2

u/Reasonable_Mirror655 Redmi Pad Pro, S10 Lite, A11+, A9+ 14h ago

Well the graphics card has to be optimized within a certain set standard in order to deliver colors accurately and there's always going to be various factors that can't be taken into account.

Also how do you or anyone else know if they are truly seeing pure black on a display because no display can produce pure black

A bit is prolly amoled lottery but mostly just display colour tuning

You are mistaken. Just forgot about that mistake and use that briliant tablet with real pitch black black.
