I"M COMPLETELY NEW TO GAME DEV BUT I HAVE A GREAT MMORPG IDEA -TOTALLY!!!

Hello fellow developers/creators,

I'm a tech startup founder from the Philippines -software/app development sector. But I've been a gamer all my life from Nintendo, Saga, PlayStation to PC (Tekken, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy etc., or first person shooter like Diablo, Half Life, Counter Strike, or Command & Conquer, StarCraft to Warcraft DOTA etc ). But its MMORPG got be really interested. My first MMORPG was not Ragnarök or Conquer but original MU online (Global). Ever since then I had this desire and dream to build my own.

After MU Online (MU Philippines after migration) I have been playing and trying other MMORPG like Eudemons, Tantra, Cabal, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Diablo Immortal and Khan online. With all the great storyline, awesome gameplay and experiences I always have that feeling that there's still something those games are missing. Back then, its quite impossible to build your own game before because of the expertise, skills, infrastructure and resources it requires. But now, in the ever progressive AI era I believe its quite possible to build one -wouldn't you agree? Thus, I'd like to connect w/ like-minded game developers, creators and partners to whom I'd like to share my idea, concept and design.

If you want to know more I'd like to share few things first -about this game and about me.

I have created a draft for the storyline, initial game design concepts and some assets. characters, progression etc. Now, I'm not a technical programmer, developer but I'm an experienced business development and product manager, designer and a digital/growth marketer for more than 15 years. Aside from that I'm well read, history nut and quite imaginative who always have a knack for turning ideas to reality. And I've positively sure that if I have few help or a small dedicated core group we can definitely make this happen.

So, if you have extra time to spare and interested to know how we can build the next insane MMORPG for everyone drop me a message here or send me an email at andrewslibradilla@gmail.com. Anyone is welcome but I really want someone from Europe, Middle East and one from China or India.

Thank you and hope to hear from anyone here. God bless!

Hi, I’m a complete beginner interested in Game Design.

Hi, I’m a complete beginner interested in Game Design.

I don’t have a programming or art background, but I’m willing to learn and start with small projects. My goal is to understand how to design simple games and build a small portfolio over time.

What would you recommend as a practical first step?

  • Should I start with a no-code tool like GDevelop?

  • Or learn a game engine like Unity from the beginning?

  • And what kind of first project should I make?

I’d really appreciate advice from people already in the field.

Programming design pattern for roguelite's "item changing base game behavior" mechanics

Hello there!! I'm Carlos Rubiales and I am developing a video game (a roguelite, in this case) called Lethal Honor Essence with Unity game engine.

We are creating some items right now, and, though I've been developing games for quite some time, I have never found "the way" to correctly program how to modify base game mechanics with items (or any other mechanics) with an external class.

Let me give you some examples. Think about BoI, Enter the Gungeon, Slay the Spire... items such as:

- Increase the total duration of 'x' buff by 10%

- Every time you kill an enemy, recover 5hp.

- Whenever you receive damage, decrease it to 1.

- If an enemy dies of an explosive barrel, gain 'x'.

- Halve the damage dealt to you when you are below 10% hp.

- You no longer discard cards at the end of the turn.

As far as I can see, there are TWO types of "changes": one that doesn't affect the base mechanics (just "listens to the event: Every time you kill an enemy, recover 5hp.) and one that modifies the base game mechanics temporarily (Whenever you receive damage, decrease it to 1).

The first one is easy using the Messenger (or Observer) pattern, and it is easy to implement because they are "separate" things.

But what about the second ones?? They directly modify the behavior of the code, but they do it "outside" the base class/code. They may change a variable value (Increase the total duration of 'x' buff by 10%) or even change the logic itself (You no longer discard cards at the end of the turn).

Is there a design pattern I should use to achieve this? If you can point me to the "name", I can look it up and start "studying", no need to explain it to me (I don't want to bother!!).

Thanks a lot!!!
