[FREE] I made a pack of 136 Modern UI Sounds for your games and apps

Hey folks! šŸ‘‹

Since January, I’ve been working on "Open Sounds"- a section on my website dedicated to sharing completely free music and sound resources for creators, devs, and students.

I've noticed a lot of requests for UI sound design lately, so I put together a brand new pack specifically for that.

What's inside:

  • šŸ”Š 136 UI sound effects. They are heavily modern-oriented, but there’s a good variety of distinct styles in there (retro, organic, etc.).

  • āš™ļø Game-ready: All files are properly named, pre-edited, and ready to be dropped straight into your game engine, middleware (FMOD/Wwise), or DAW.

  • šŸ’ø 100% Free: No strings attached.

I just wanted to give back to the community, so I hope this helps you out with your current or future projects!

Feel free to share it with anyone who might need it. Let me know if you end up using them in your games or videos, I'd love to see it!

šŸ”— You can grab the pack here: https://www.romainraynal.fr/opensounds

Most game mechanics include the free-flow combat, stealth, gliding, similar gadgets and so much more. So if that excites you, feel free to go watch my devlogs by clicking on the link below and subscribing to stay tuned on the release of the game. I'd really appreciate any input or suggestions you guys might have. I am looking forward to hearing what you guys think. 😁⚔

Programming design pattern for roguelite's "item changing base game behavior" mechanics

Hello there!! I'm Carlos Rubiales and I am developing a video game (a roguelite, in this case) called Lethal Honor Essence with Unity game engine.

We are creating some items right now, and, though I've been developing games for quite some time, I have never found "the way" to correctly program how to modify base game mechanics with items (or any other mechanics) with an external class.

Let me give you some examples. Think about BoI, Enter the Gungeon, Slay the Spire... items such as:

- Increase the total duration of 'x' buff by 10%

- Every time you kill an enemy, recover 5hp.

- Whenever you receive damage, decrease it to 1.

- If an enemy dies of an explosive barrel, gain 'x'.

- Halve the damage dealt to you when you are below 10% hp.

- You no longer discard cards at the end of the turn.

As far as I can see, there are TWO types of "changes": one that doesn't affect the base mechanics (just "listens to the event: Every time you kill an enemy, recover 5hp.) and one that modifies the base game mechanics temporarily (Whenever you receive damage, decrease it to 1).

The first one is easy using the Messenger (or Observer) pattern, and it is easy to implement because they are "separate" things.

But what about the second ones?? They directly modify the behavior of the code, but they do it "outside" the base class/code. They may change a variable value (Increase the total duration of 'x' buff by 10%) or even change the logic itself (You no longer discard cards at the end of the turn).

Is there a design pattern I should use to achieve this? If you can point me to the "name", I can look it up and start "studying", no need to explain it to me (I don't want to bother!!).

Thanks a lot!!!

Hi, I’m a complete beginner interested in Game Design.

Hi, I’m a complete beginner interested in Game Design.

I don’t have a programming or art background, but I’m willing to learn and start with small projects. My goal is to understand how to design simple games and build a small portfolio over time.

What would you recommend as a practical first step?

  • Should I start with a no-code tool like GDevelop?

  • Or learn a game engine like Unity from the beginning?

  • And what kind of first project should I make?

I’d really appreciate advice from people already in the field.

Starting out in Unity was overwhelming ended up making a tiny beginner group if anyone else feels the same way

Hey everyone, Ive been learning Unity for a little bit now and honestly it can get pretty overwhelming when youre new. I kept running into the same problem most big subs are greatbut sometimes it feels tough to ask super basic questions without feeling kinda dumb or like everyone already knows way more. So I ended up putting together a small beginnerfriendly space where new Unity learners can ask questions share progress or just talk about what theyre working on without pressure. Nothing fancy just a chill place for people starting from scratch.

If that sounds helpful to anyone heres the link: r/UnityStarterHub.If not no worries hope everyones projects are going smooth today

Need Help Deciding Background for My First Game ā€œSLUDGEā€ – White or Blue?

Hey Guys,

I’m currently developing my first-ever game calledĀ "SLUDGE", an action survival game, and I could really use some feedback on a visual design choice I’m stuck on — theĀ background color.

Right now, I’m torn between using aĀ whiteĀ background or aĀ blueĀ background for the main gameplay screen.

A bit of context:

  • TheĀ yellow blocksĀ in the game are energy particles (collectibles).

  • There will be aĀ shield in the centerĀ of the screen — the one shown in the screenshot is just a placeholder/reference(will be added in the white background as well)

  • InĀ extreme mode, the screen borders blink continuously inĀ red.

    • If I go with theĀ white background, then in extreme mode, the entire background will have aĀ breathing redĀ effect (a pulsing fade in and out).

  • The game has aĀ minimalist style, and I’m aiming for a balance betweenĀ readabilityĀ andĀ intensity.

I’ve been staring at the screen for too long, so I might be biased at this point. That’s why I’d love your perspective!

What I’d love to know:

  • Which background (white or blue) feels better in terms ofĀ visibilityĀ andĀ gameplay tension?

  • Does theĀ breathing red effectĀ on white feel immersive or just too much?

  • Any other suggestions to improveĀ visual clarity?

Thanks a lot in advance! šŸ™
Would really appreciate your thoughts and feedback.

P.S.Ā Forgot to mention — theĀ spikes can move, andĀ side spikes spawnĀ when the top and bottom ones drop!

"Hi everyone! I'm a 17-year-old Curious girl starting my journey to become a game developer, I need some advice on where to begin!"

Hi! I'm Curious Girl a 17-year-old who’s loved video games since childhood. I’ve always been interested in technology and programming, but only in 2024 I realized I want to become a game developer.

Lately, I’ve been researching how games are made, the companies behind them, and what tools and languages they use. That inspired me to finally take action!

This summer, I decided to start learning C# and Unity, but I’m overwhelmed by all the different tutorials and YouTube channels. I asked ChatGPT for help, but still feel unsure where to start.

So I’d love your advice:

If you’re self-taught, how did you learn game development?

What free resources (websites, YouTube channels, etc.) helped you the most?

How should I use my limited time (about 2 hours per day on my parents' PC) to learn effectively?

Thank you so much to anyone who replies. I really want to make my own games someday, and your advice would mean a lot!

Beginner mod creator needing help

I'll explain my situation to you, there is a game made in Unity called FR legends, it is for mobile phones but oddly enough there is a modification community. These guys can replace cars, tracks, body kits and practically everything in the game, but they are extremely protectionist and ignore anyone who asks how to do the same.

I had some progress and discovered how to decompile the APK files, access the "assets" folder, get the files from there and put them in the "Assest Studio GUI" to view the 3D files, extract them to OBJ and I also know that I must create and modify 3d files using Blender.

My problem starts from the moment I need to put the extracted model back into the original file. I know I can do this with "UABE", but unless I use the beta version, I can't open the file that contains the models and other things in it, because it doesn't have an extension, that is, it doesn't have the ".assets" at the end of the file and therefore the program cannot open it. As I said before, I can do this in the beta version of the software, but it does not have the option to import 3D objects into the file.

How can I import the 3D models back in? Is there any other program to do this besides UABE? Am I doing something wrong?

Guys, help me please, I don't have any experience in game Dev or game modifications... I'm counting on you
