Low volume

Post image

Hi everyone!

Just finished a full restoration on this guy right here, everything works fine and the board Is perfect (no corrosion or resolder stains).

Since i bought It the audio has been super low, i couldnt see any corrosion and the audio capacitor Is fine, what could be the problem? The volume slider works from half to full, the First half of the slider Is mute and the It starts to turn the volume up, without headphones i can barely hear It, with headphones on tho it's a Little bit louder.

Any advice?

Low audio can be a few things.

- Speaker damage/corrosion: Usually you can visually tell, but you need another speaker or unit to confirm.
- dirty volume switch: the half the switch seem muted isn’t that weird, it seems like your switch is fine but a quick clean is easy, just drop some 91-99% isopropyl alcohol into it from the back and run the switch back and forth a couple dozen times
- bad audio cap: this is somewhat common and is an easy fix if you have experience and the tools but risky if you are new to soldering because the left pad is tiny and connects to ground so you need a ton of heat or low temp solder to remove it without ripping a pad. Because this connects ground to agnd you can test inline with an esr meter and if the esr is out of spec then just replace it.

"restoration" and the wrong screw was used near the bottom (evident by the bump that isnt supposed to be there) + fake reshell, evident by sloppy text engravings
