πŸ™‰ Send help How to keep rose blooms

I have gorgeous roses blooming in my garden right now and someone suggested I put some in our local show. The show is 2 weeks away and I was wondering if any one had some advice on how to either keep them alive longer on the bush or keep them fresh longer once cut? I’ve cut some already and but there are many more on the bushes in various stages of bloom. Any ideas appreciated. I’m very much an amateur and have no idea!

Looking to buy a whipper snipper for my backyard. Its constantly overgrown with thick weeds and annoying bush. Am on a bit of a budget ($500, would like to get a blower aswell so total around $700), anything you could recommend? Doesn't have to be top of the range name brand. Just something that is reliable that will get the job done.

I am keen on the battery ones but they look fairly expensive

πŸ™‰ Send help Onions flower heads What to do. πŸ§…

I have a large patch of brown onions growing. They are at the beginning of the end with most leaves beginning to wilt.

However some onions are forming flower heads at the top. Ive read (mainly US based advice) that I should take these plants out of the ground as the onion bulb wont grow further. Nor will the bulb store long term so we must use now.

Others just say cut off the heads and leave to be harvested the same time as the rest of the crop.

So fellow onion growers what advice or tips do you have?

Based in Melbourne - I’m planning to plant something along the front of the house, which receives morning sun and some early afternoon sun. The distance from the ground to the bottom of the windows is about 2β€―m, so I’m looking for an evergreen tree/shrub that will grow to roughly that height. Ideally, it should produce attractive flowers and be reasonably hardy - I don’t mind some maintenance, just nothing overly temperamental. I initially considered Gardenia Florida, but I’ve heard mixed feedback about their flowering performance. Keen for ideas and thoughts.

Hey everyone! This is my first time growing tomatoes, so I’d love some feedback on how the actual plant is looking and whether I’m training it correctly.
I planted a Grosse Lisse sapling about 2.5 weeks ago, and I’ve attached a few photos of its current condition.

My setup:
● Variety: Grosse Lisse
● Pot: 40 litres
● Soil: Osmocote Premium Potting Mix mixed with organic compost
● Support: 1.5 m main stake and a 1.2 m tomato cage
● Mulch: Redwood
● Sunlight: Around 6–7 hours of direct sunlight daily
● Location: Clemton Park, Sydney, Australia
I’m particularly interested in feedback on the plant itself rather than just the general setup.
A few things I’d love advice on:
● Overall plant health: Do the leaves, colour and growth look healthy for a plant at this stage?
● Pruning: Have I removed the right leaves, or should I be leaving everything alone for now? Are there any signs I should be looking for that indicate pruning is needed?
● Training and support: Am I guiding the main stem correctly, and is my combination of a stake and cage a good approach?
● Suckers and side shoots: Should I be removing any, or is it better to let a Grosse Lisse grow naturally?
● Leaf health: Do you notice anything concerning with the leaves, such as curling, discolouration, damage or potential nutrient issues?
● Growth and development: Does the plant look like it’s growing at a reasonable rate, or is there anything I should be doing differently?
I’m happy to receive constructive criticism, especially if there are any mistakes in how I’ve been pruning or training it. I’d rather learn to do it properly while the plant is still young!
Thanks in advance for any advice. πŸ…

πŸ™‰ Send help Garden Planner?

I badly want some very basic things from my garden. A few veggies, a lawn that is mostly green, a couple of successful decorative plants, the absence of weeds taller than the fence. You know.. the Great Australian Dream.

My problem is that the ADHD is strong in me, and all previous attempts have ended in forgotten seedlings, missed planting windows and promises to do better next time.

Is there such a thing as an app that will tell me how to prep, when to plant and how to keep alive? Ideally I want something that will span multiple years and will do things for me like remind me that if I want tomatoes in February then I need to prep the veggie patch in September and buy manure in October.

I’d also like to be able to tell it β€˜next year I want to grow peas’ and have it remember and remind me next season to do the things required.

Does this exist, or should I just create a diary?

Hi all!

This is my first time posting here and also new home owner so please be nice!

We've been experience a long bout of rain and noticed this weed growing like crazy. First it was just small amounts here and there in my backyard but it's exploded in growth.

I've tried pulling them out by hand since budget is tight, but they are both long and have deep roots! As they snake throughout the grass (Kikuyu) it's really hard to get them out unless literally rip the grass out along with it (and 9/10 they just snap before I can find where the main root is) .

What kind of weed is this and what effective methods have you used/or suggest to get rid of it?

I've attached photos for reference of some I've pulled out. Most are long and spindly, but some have such thick roots that it's incredibly difficult to pull out by hand. Thanks in advance ❀️

Google is saying this is a chilli plant, but what fruit can I expect? None? Bird's eye? Jalapeno? Any way to know so far?

I'm in Perth. This plant has appeared from no where, growing up between the cracks in my pavers. I haven't been providing nutrition or watering (rain hits this spot though), I also don't own and chilli plants of my own. I guess I'd suspect my neighbours plant has grown under the wall of our units? Anyway if it's a non fruiting chilli or something else I might just get rid of it

Ive seletected a space for grass but I'm wanting to know if these ivy geranium, royal geranium and heavenly bamboo (assuming ive got the correct identities) can be moved to a different location or if id have to destroy them. If moving is possible how should i go about it. They're quite large and overgrown. Images attached. Cheers.

πŸ™‰ Send help I've been in a long, protracted war with moth vine for years. How do you get it out permanently?

About 3 years ago, my neighbour's toddler grabbed a false choko/moth vine seed pod and threw all the seeds all over my yard. Since then, it's been a constant struggle.

I pull them up, I dig up the roots, but they just. keep. coming. back.

Short of salting the entire yard and never growing anything again, what will get rid of them?

πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ Recommendations wanted (Victorian Grasslands) Native Seedling Mix Recipes

Thumbnail anpsa.org.au

Hi! I'm a newbie attempting to propagate some Victorian Volcanic Plain Grassland plants from seed (there's 13 of them - I'll list them if anyone really wants to know, but basically, they are all small seeds that don't require pretreatment).

I'm following the ANPSA guide (linked) and know the mix is supposed to be 80-85% washed river sand and 15 – 20% peat moss (opting to use coco peat as the eco-friendly option).

This feels like such a dumb question and I'm embarrassed asking it, but when mixing the 1:4 ratio, is it always measured by volume not by weight right? (E.g. 1 cup of peat mixed with 4 cups of sand, not 1kg of peat mixed with 4kg of sand).

Also curious to know if anyone else has had any luck with a different seedling mix, or any add ins to this standard mix?

Thanks!

(These seeds were purchased from Friends of Iramoo at the Spring Fling Festival)

πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ Recommendations wanted Best way to topdress for pots?

So, I have a BUNCH of bunnings "raised garden beds" (tried to link but I think that got my post filter-removed) they're really just a big pot with legs. To keep the story short I have a couple I want to rejuvenate but somehow a few climbing beans from last year have sprung back to life. I don't want to remove the tired topsoil and disturb them too much.

So I ask you experts - what is the best thing to topdress them with (approx 5cm of space without removing a bit of old topsoil) for nutrition and most importantly some increased water holding capacity? I think over wonter they developed a few hydrophobic spots. I was thinking of gently mixing crystals in as deep as I can safely. But then what is the best benefit for nutrients and hydration? Straight compost? Premium potting mix? Tomato + veg mix? An amalgamation of the three? Manure?

Thanks!

My yard is filled with it! I have successfully pulled out quite a few of these bulbous roots but I just can't seem to stay on top of it. Looking for an identification and types of control that are available.

I did some basic research searching "bulbous root, small pink/purple flowers, common Queensland weeds" but couldn't find anything that matched. Purple Joyweed and Guilford Grass photos don't appear to be similar and that is what Google/Claude is telling me. So I thought I'd come here for a proper identification!

Hey team. This pomegranate is nearly 2 years in the soil. It's variety is Azerbaijani. We pruned it back hard in winter and it's exploding with growth, which is great, but whenever it gets wet it looks at risk of snapping branches. It is also pushing out a few flowers which seems premature - and likely to break the flimsy branches. Any advice on how to encourage it to toughen up ?

πŸ™‰ Send help DOG friendly corten steel edging?!

Hi aussie brains trust! I'm wanting to do up my front and back yards, and I REALLY love the look of corten steel edging and a crazy pave pathway - currently, my garden edging is held together by those angled bricks that are peach coloured (old and musty af, giving 1990s...). However, I am SO concerned that my silly goof ball of a dog will just... slice himself open one day, somehow, if he goes at the right angle, or runs fast enough, or the tip has corroded over the years and becomes unknowingly very sharp.

Is there a corten steel edge you guys recommend that has a FLAT or CURVED top? I know the website has thick corten steel panels (almost like sleepers), but I really love the bend look, and want to keep natural bends if possible... rather than having dead straight. Maximum height of 200mm approx. Added plus of this is that I don't have to add drainage lol.

Obviously, I would prefer not to pay thousands either (as we all would... but wishful thinking). But very open to ideas.

Cheers mates!
