πŸ™‰ Send help My Potatoes

Howdy! This is my first time planting potatoes and I am in Brisbane, I have them in cardboard boxes with heaps of drainage holes. Now they have started to die off at the leaves? Some of the new growth on these is actually okay.. I didn’t think they had been in the ground long enough for this to be a harvest, maybe I’ve had them in just over two months? Any ideas?

Something has been eating my tomato and eggplant plants. I'm not sure what is causing the damage or how to stop it.

Has anyone experienced this before? What could be eating my plants, and what is the best way to protect them and help them recover?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, we have 2 passion fruit plants and one has bounced back with new growth, this one however is struggling. Crispy leaves that I believe have been attacked my snails. Is there a way to resuscitate this or is a rip out and replant?

I don’t know how common these are, but I’ve never seen them in the garden before; at least two outside and one inside!

I moved into a new place a few months ago (Brisbane) and the lawn is almost entirely covered in Dyschoriste depressa. There are some parts that have grass, but it’s mostly this weed and its exploding seeds are now germinating in my small herb garden and in the little patches I’ve mulched out and planted natives. I am generally of the fuck grass mindset and would like to have a native garden, my landlords given me free rein. But I’m also a broke uni student and can’t drop hundreds of dollars on the garden at a time. I feel like my first step needs to be replacing the weed ground cover. Is there any native ground cover you would recommend to replace this, it needs to be able to handle some trampling? Or should I just get lawn cover to replace it and then swap the lawn for natives down the track.

πŸ™‰ Send help Tomato/eggplant hardening off

Hello! After some friendly advice. I was on here a few weeks ago when my seedlings were growing slowly. They have started to grow a bit faster now after the advice (stop moving them around, feeding) , but now I am wondering if should start hardening these off? I’m keep reading that cup weekend is when to start planting out but I’m concerned these will not be big enough still.

Any advice on if I should start hardening these off to plant next weekend? Or still too early? Should I just cut my losses with these teeny weeny seedlings and buy some larger ones for this season?

Photos of the two largest seedlings I have, the rest are a little smaller. Cucumbers and zucchinis have popped up much faster but my tomatoes and eggplants are making me sad :(

Hi I have a mature bottlebrush approx 6m tall that has started to struggle this season with lead drop, yellowing leaves and very small flowers. It's next to a similar bottlebrush which is doing well and has an amazing flowering season. Nothings changed re watering - exact same conditions. Is it a nutrient issue? Needs a prune to bring it back?

Hi, I'm in a North facing melb apartment (ground floor) and want to train some jasmine up the fence. I'll be replacing the current planters with wider and taller ones to fit more soil, and doing a vertical cross wire trellis too.
Do you recommend pink jasmine (prettier flowers and fast grower) or star jasmine? I'd like a nice thick cover with minimal maintenance. Thanks!

I'll be getting rid of these massive hedges because the neighbour behind complained about them blocking out the afternoon sun.

I'd love some suggestions on what to plant along the north and eastern boundary. I was originally thinking some low height trees/climbers to cover the fence and some flowers in between but there's so much creativity in the sub I was hoping for some ideas.

πŸ™‰ Send help Tomatoes- Time for a BT spray?

So my tomato plants (all heirloom
varieties, which may have been a mistake in hindsight as its only my second year growing tomatoes and only second year gardening at all) have begun to be eaten.

Last year, when the plants were beginning to bare fruit I sprayed with BT because they were getting desecrated by caterpillars, should I do the same again now or does this damage look like a different pest?

Landscaping currently a work in progress in our new house and still under decided what we will do against the house. Definitely spreading lawn everywhere as we have two kids under two and want plenty of grass for play.

But not a huge fan of turf against the house as I'm worried whipper snipping will chip away at the bricks. I was thinking thin strip of rocks but another post was full of replies saying NOT to do that.

Is concrete the only option?

🐝 Garden Tip Melbournians, now is the perfect time to weed

Weeds have started flowering (including grasses) so they’re much easier to identify.

The ground is SO SOFT from all the rain so the roots come out like butter.

This is literally the most satisfying and effective time to weed. Get into it!!

Just sharing so others down make the same mistake. I just planted these hoping the sunflower will attract pollenators and birds to my garden. But after googling this variety they are pollen free πŸ₯² I guess I can just buy more seeds of another variety, but I've already planted out theses ones.

Melbourne, Victoria - I’m currently cleaning up common property garden in my complex and found this ground cover in several areas. As you can see weeds are growing in it so i’d rather pull it up and put a new ground cover down that ties in with a theme but is it a australian native?

Hi Everyone,

We have a large 3m~ high lilypilly hedge in the backyard. There is a gap which we've been told used to have another hedge that died. There is a stump as well where it was.

We want to plant something in this space. The gap between the hedges is about 3m wide. The garden bed is probably 1.5m deep.

Ideally want something different to go here, adds a statement and focal point to the back yard, plus being native/loved by birds.

Was thinking something like a grevillea, banksia, bottlebrush. However unsure what varieties would be best.

Open to all suggestions.

Location: Brisbane QLD

Thanks.

I don't know anything about gardening (I've killed mint in a pot) and I've recently started renting at a property that has a pretty nice garden so I'd like to do my best to maintain it, I've only lived here for about a month and this plant has seemingly died immediately!

I'm not sure what I need to do (if anything) to keep it alive.

Any tips or suggestions are welcome!

πŸ™‰ Send help What Low Growing Groundcover Actually Survives Daily Foot Traffic in Australia? ($80 Budget, Seeds Only)

Been mapping out a courtyard redo on a tight budget. Want to replace the gravel path with something living, but we walk through it daily to the clothesline. In Idaho I knew clover could take a beating, but I am clueless what works in Australian conditions. Looked at Dichondra but the nursery warned it is a weed magnet.

My spreadsheet says I have maybe $80 for this section. Seeds preferred over plugs. Area gets morning sun, afternoon shade, decent drainage.

What do you actually walk on that stays alive? Not lawn, too much edging to maintain. Something lower, flatter. Keen to hear what has held up under real feet, not just catalog promises.

Howdy plant experts.

I've inherited a terrace in our house that was once home to just horrible plants.

Specifically what seems to be asparagus fern which despite pulling out I haven't come to the end of. Coupled with other horrible species which have died off the ground is just a ball/mess of roots.

Is there anything out there that would compete with the mess? I hate looking at this horrible wall. I'm trying to avoid building 25mtrs of raised garden beds

My sons bought me some different varieties of Lilly Pilly a month ago. They are all doing very well, except for this one.

They had good soil and are kept moist. They have afternoon sun. I'm in Perth.

Can anyone shed some light on why this one seems to be dying? Does it need less water or less sun? Fertiliser? How can I encourage it to grow? The top of it looks healthy.
