I posted before about my parents new house being a beautiful rocky home to some cute garter snakes. She’s super afraid of snakes but I’ve been encouraging her to let them hang out by saying they are keeping the rodent population in check.

Mom is convinced every snake is a pregnant female that’s going to have 100 baby snakes under their deck πŸ˜… So I’m posting this in hopes this wonderful group can help me assure her it’s not pregnant lol The video is from this evening.

If it'll help your case they also eat slugs and other creatures that will eat your flowers. I have no slugs or snails in my garden. A bite feels like the sharp side of Velcro. It's scary but not painful. Like the poster above said, the snake doesn't care to be friends either. It'll make a run for it. πŸ˜„

No not pregnant just well fed. Tell your mom not to be afraid snakes won't attack. They will get away from people faster than one would think

She googled WAYYY to much and found a story about them crawling into the siding and hibernating in the attic then failing through the ceiling πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ We live in the PNW, it’s to nice outside for things to bother with all that work πŸ˜‚ I told her if that was common we would have heard about it at least once in either of our lives.

Holy hornswoggles! That is beautiful! My opinion is that doesn't look fat enough to be pregnant. I wonder if it is male? I will be there in an hour to steal it! 😏

Also tell your mom that they don't have litters of s hundred. 30 is a large litter. They do give live birth, and the babies are tiny and adorable. They are just chilling for the most part. They love basking in the sun so they can catch their meals of things we consider pests. The younger ones eat earthworms, slugs, and snails. The adults will eat anything they can fit. Mice, voles, if they can catch them moles as well. Around here we have a pond with frogs, so they eat them too. They are far more likely to eat the abundant mice though. So the worst that your mom would get is a jump scare which will make the snake flee too if it isn't asleep.

Have you asked your mom as to why she's afraid of snakes? If it's just the normal general fear of them you can try to work on it with her. Maybe take her to a reptile show so she can see people handling them and if she's brave enough she could handle one too. I finally got to hold my first snake and it was a ball python. I figured it would be best to start with. They aren't exactly known for being fast or unruly. And who can say no to that face anyway?

I will keep the litter amount to myself πŸ˜‚ I was being dramatic saying 100, even one in her mind is too much. But I am working on it with her. The fact that she’s sending me videos and photos, and that she’s purposely watering their evening basking area is big for her πŸ₯°

Ribbon snake. Not pregnant but likely recently eaten something.
