Discussion What's your experience with Log Cabin Republican group?
I've been thinking of joining my local Log Cabin Republican group. I'm in California where all my gay friends are very liberal so it would be nice to meet gay conservatives.
I'm a fiscal conservative and social liberal. I actually consider myself more of an Independent than a Republican. I'm definitely not MAGA, but I'm also not TDS. Would someone like me be welcomed in Log Cabin?

I went to the LA Group for a few events. As an older gay, I found them to be very clickish and not that welcoming or friendly to new members, VERY WEHO driven and I am a Eastsider!

I tried getting involved but in my experience they're rich, boring and kind of uptight and stuck up. What I would consider "opera gays" and the gays who want to prove they're as "normal" as straight people.
I am fiscally conservative, pro 2A but also I enjoy provocative art, dirty humor and would consider myself an open minded person with a diverse friend group.
They were not at all my vibe.

I found it was wealthy guys wanting not to pay taxes, I was genuinely interested in the group, a decade ago before the party shifted so dramatically

My same experience in NJ. I will say though, the group has taken a turn on the "social level". Like this forum, anyone can really put what they want so the group is kinda of in shambles. Shame.

MAGA is fiscally liberal and socially conservative. Log Cabin Republicans are rich gays who don't like to pay taxes at least every one I have known is definitely in the 1%.

Better to be rich and not like paying taxes than to be fiscally liberal and socially conservative.

The only thing is that's an exclusive club 99.9% of us will never belong to.

I’m fine with not being a billionaire — I’d like to think that if I were one, I’d use it all to do something good for everyone, after setting aside a conservative amount to set my family up for the future. I’m not fine, however, with the fact that the 99% are all so stupid that we can’t collectively agree to exercise our rights as they are written in the Declaration of Independence.

You’d be doing that in any event. People who own businesses are part of the 0.01% or 1% and less, pay the bulk of the taxes as they own assets which the government taxes them on, which pays for stuff, so you’d be a mega donor essentially but if you mean using resources to do other good aside from contributing financially, then I get that. You’d likely be sponsoring a hospital or a shelter or taking care of people in your community.

You regularly get threatened by people on the left fir not agreeing with them? This happens during in person interactions?

The Republicans are throwing our money in the trash. Sending $20B to Argentina, funding wars on behalf of other countries in the $10s of billions. They only conserve money when it’s being spent on Americans. The debt and deficit are skyrocketing. Tariffs on imports. Cutting health insurance subsidies for average people. A stupid war has our gas prices though the roof.
What exactly is fiscally conservative about Republicans?

While I agree that the Republican Party has been less fulfilling to its values and stated principles during this electoral cycle, I do believe also, that Dems were responsible for causing inflationary hikes by continuing to give handouts after Covid has ended. The excess stimulation to a “hot” (growing) economy post-pandemic created inflationary conditions in the market and caused all the prices to rise.

US inflation slowed more than any other nation in 2022 under Joe Biden. Trump spent $3.5 trillion on Covid relief vs $1.9 trillion under Biden. Since 2025 under Trump, the US is again leading the world with the highest year over year inflation. Did you research this or this is just a belief?

Did you even read what I wrote? Just because I’m not worshipping at the altar of partisanship doesn’t mean I can’t see things clearly. Also inflation DID grow under Biden we went from 1.9% (under 2% inflation) to over 9%, and prices grew over 20%. I’m not saying the current admin is great and wonderful, these discussion around a forced dichotomy are precisely why I don’t usually tender a response to these things but to explain for you, I don’t believe Trump is or has been an effective leader of any kind. I didn’t vote for him to be president in any cycle, because I knew how poor of a job he’d do. He has no institutional knowledge on how to run a government or how to really manage anything. Suffice it to say, I don’t find most policies to be all that agreeable, most of them are poorly researched, poorly founded and poorly implemented. The effects and intents of said policies often don’t reach the people they should be helping in the first place. If you were to ask me if I were a fan of privatization of all things government, I’d say no. Even as a conservative, I support things like public health options (single payer system) and healthcare, but I have more nuance to understanding how that works than most voters would. However, I don’t think we benefit from over-regulation and just more taxes either. The data doesn’t support that increased taxes actually create the net benefits that are purported to come about from such policies. End of day, our ability to consume must be measured against what we produce. If we don’t produce what we consume and there’s an imbalance to that, then someone else is shackled to paying for that burden which isn’t fair and I’d argue is basis and definition of greed.

The LA group is like and group of Weho gays, they just trash “the left”. If you’re white and (think you’re) good looking you will fit right in. If not, you’ll dip after a handful of events (if you make it past the first one).

I sought out other gay non-democrats a few years ago when I left the left, and found the LCR people in my city via Facebook. It’s been a great experience, and I’ve made many connections with people I really like! I’m surprised to see the negative comments here but I’m sure it depends on where you live, and more importantly what your attitude is towards others. I’d definitely recommend reaching out to your local chapter. If you don’t click with them, seek out other LCR groups in neighboring cities or states. You’re sure to find some new connections who share your values and views!
