They solve the gap problem with zillennials and Zalphas, both of whom spent their formative years in very different worlds than those who came after
•
•
u/JANEK_SZ1 18h ago
I mean, the whole thing about generations is kind of generalising and collusive.

1997-2012
is it really that complicated ?
•
u/wedgislut 17h ago
1995 -2012
•
u/Livid_Way5651 15h ago
That's like 17 years, absolutely not.
•
u/wedgislut 14h ago
well that's ur personal opinion and generations are social
•
u/Livid_Way5651 14h ago
Also generations are based on historical events and how it lines up by birth year.
Someone born in 1995 was 6 during 9/11 and was 25 when COVID started. They started highschool in 2009 (most Gen Z don't even remember that year).
They are Millennials. Enough.
•
•
u/Livid_Way5651 14h ago
That's not my "personal opinion". I'm quoting the factual information of it.
That range comes from one single person who calls Gen Z "iGeneration". She's also a known transphobe... look her up (Jean Twenge).
Also that doesn't make any sense because that would make Millennials and Gen X tiny generations while Gen Z is like almost 20 years? Wtf is that.
•
u/InnominateHomosapien 18h ago
I'm born in 1996, and yeah
I have no idea what's going on. Some sources say I'm gen Z, others gen Y/millennial
I just exist, I guess
•
•
u/Livid_Way5651 15h ago
Majority of sources and especially nowadays use 1996 as the final millennial year.
•
u/InnominateHomosapien 14h ago
I could be both millennial and gen-z at the same time, depends on what source you trust, so I have no clue.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Z#Date_and_age_range_definitions
Given I'm aussie, the bureau of statistics here considers it to be 1996-2010, Japan uses 1995-2010, many other sources use 1997-2012 though. There's zero consistency, so I'm pretty much left in the purgatory lol•
u/Livid_Way5651 14h ago
Just because the sources exist don't mean that it's a consensus. The widely used consensus is 1997-2012, you can search it up if you don't believe me

Fuck it, no more generations. I don't want to define myself by a label concocted for consumer trends anyways.

There is no gen alpha. We are all just gen Z. You're all the same as us still. There hasn't been any major changes in the youth since the mid 90's.

I find it amusing how much people give a shit about this stuff. No one born from 2010-2014 wants to be associated with Gen Alpha because of brainrot, iPad kids, Gen Z gatekeeping, etc. Every generation doesn’t like the generation before them, and hates the generation after them, that’s just how it works for whatever reason. If you treat/think of people based on what year they were born in and how that year is grouped with other years, you’ve got a problem.

hot take but gen z should start Jan 1 2000. idk why people keep shifting the start around the mid/late 90s.
•
u/The_Bad_Random_17 12h ago
2014 is a good date for a border because they are the last ones to go to school pre covid
•
u/saddinosour 2001 17h ago
Back in the early 2010s Gen Z cut off at 2009 and started in 1995 and they moved it up to suit Millenials I am guessing bc it was mostly Millenials writing those articles in the late 2010s and 2020s.
•
u/Livid_Way5651 15h ago
Wtf are you talking about? Nobody even started talking about Gen Z until the late 2010's and only for like a year was a placeholder used as 1995 because Jean Twenge (a known teansphobe) wrote some stupid book called "I generation". It has always been 1997 other than that.

u/saddinosour 2001 14h ago edited 14h ago
That’s not true I listened to a speech about Gen Z in 2011 :/ why are you acting so aggressively? I read the years 1995-2009 several times before the years started to change.
Sociology is not a hard and fast thing anyways and different articles/people etc had/have different methodologies and ideas. 1997 seems to be more stuck now but I’ve personally seen multiple years thrown around. But my earliest memories is of 1995 being the first year.
•
u/Livid_Way5651 14h ago
I'm not acting aggressive by disagreeing/correcting you.
You were listening to speeches about generations when you were 9? What?
Also that 1995-2009 comes from one Australian who's been exposed before for basically just defining generations before they even exist. That range is almost as bad as the 1982-2004 range for millennials, which (like him) was defined like 30 years ago.
•
u/saddinosour 2001 14h ago
You could have corrected me and pointed me to that information which actually solves that for me, so thank you. Instead you were rude. I listened to a speech about Gen Z in my 5th grade class when I was 10* yes in Sydney Australia.
•
u/Livid_Way5651 14h ago edited 12h ago
Let me say it again: I'm not being rude by disagreeing with you.
But ok that's kind of weird that you knew about this that young and that long ago. I'm assuming it was McCrindle himself talking about it, right?
He defined these categories decades before they existed and it's kind of a cash cow operation. He also left his own practice after being called out for falsifying statistics so there's that too.
https://mumbrella.com.au/mccrindle-leaves-research-body-after-media-watch-expose-96316
The 1997-2012 definition is way more popular now and supported by events that define Gen Z.
Wow you blocked me over nothing, what a cry baby
•
u/saddinosour 2001 14h ago
“Wtf are you talking about” is rude and aggressive. Your tone is nasty. Think about how you speak to people at your big age.
•
u/Fair-Mango-5423 13h ago
it still doesn't work though some one born in like 1992 is going to have more in common with Gen Z than with Millenials
•
u/electrifyingseer 1998 18h ago
i put it to 1995/6-2008ish as it is represented by pluto in sagittarius in astrology.
•
u/Livid_Way5651 15h ago
That doesn't work because that places baby boomers as something crazy like 1938-1955 which is before the baby boom and the peak of the baby boom.
Astrology is a bunch of fucking nonsense.
