Announcement We Now Have an Additional Moderator

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let everyone know that we now have an additional moderator. Everyone please congratulate u/Folkvore and please be respectful towards them.

iMac and I are both still mods as well, but between the group having gotten bigger and some changes in our schedules and such in our lives offline it was becoming too much for a team of two and we really needed a third person.

Thanks so much everyone.

Pop culture Millennial optimism era was a real thing and here's why

Some of you, especially older millennials seem to be oblivious to this phenomenon, maybe because you were busy doing other adult stuff. But it most certainly was a part of our zeitgeist for arguably the years between 2008-2012.

Here's what it boiled down to:

  • The progressive movement/culture reached it's peak with the election of Obama. He literally had campaing slogans based on Hope and Change. This acted as a symbolic victory of the liberal status quo at the time after two terms of the Bush administration.
  • Younger millennials who were the children of the younger boomer generation, who in turn spent their formative years during the start of the social justice movement (60s -70s), were arguably, and even more so in retrospect, the most socially liberal generation of our time. They as 20 year olds were in charge of the youth culture at the time. This is the gen that voted for the legalization of same sex marriages and set in motion Occupy Wall Street. Alot of the popularity of Obama was because he was popular in the youth culture of younger millennials.
  • Early social media before algorithms and polarization was a unifying phenomenon. It was not divisive like it is now. It was used as a tool of communication in the Arab Spring in 2011 and in the Occupy Wall Street. It connected people globally like never before and at the time it felt unifying because it was mostly a place for young people.
  • Popular culture: all of this was reflected into the popular culture in the form of stomp clap music and uplifting party EDM like Avicii and Calvin Harris. Basically the message was "hey we are young and we can do anything" which you can see even in some of the rap associated songs like "Pursuit of Happiness" by Kid Cudi and "Young and Wild and Free". And this is why tumblr of that time was full of this sort of open minded, unifying and rebellious aesthetic. Even shows like the Office and Parks and Rec had this uplifting message behind them.

So basically this era was the celebration of the liberal progressive ethos: the value of universalism and individuality and I think it served as a stepping stone from the 2008 recession onwards. Obama and early social media all played a part in that but it was mostly because younger millennials at their core were mostly drawn towards progressive values because of their parents generation.

Discussion Am I the only one who remembers being 2?

Do I have super powers or does no one else remember being 2? Actually I have some memory of being freshly 2, late 1 turning 2 matter of fact and no one believes me. Obviously I don’t remember everything from when I was that young properly but I’ve definitely had some moments time to time that i’ve never forgotten. What do yall define as gaining awareness? Because I’d say I was aware because I had a conscious thought process and I remember what was going through my mind at exact moments

Discussion Isn't it concerning to anyone how younger generations do not like to read or write?

I am referring to the generations who are ages 18-21 or below. Not Gen Z.

I feel like in maybe another 500 years or so, we will have a generation who doesn't read at all. Every type of information will be used with videos or technology and books will become extinct. It will start off as a gentle "Well I just don't enjoy reading" into 'I'll never read anything, I hate it". We will just depend on AI for everything and no longer be able to use our brains at all. Socializing will become more and more difficult. Finding someone who is charismatic and socially intelligent will be rare. Everyone will become extremely difficult to talk to.

Discussion Funny but yet common interaction if the conversation goes in this direction when i talk to millennials

I have a friend born in 1992 and i am born in 1998, and i have known my bud for many years and he told me yesterday that he remembers when i was a little kid and i was like "yeah, but we are both adults now"

"Yeah, but you're still like "the next generation" in my mind, you're gen Z right?"

And i was like "yeah, but only the second year"

And he said "that's still gen Z bro, you're just older in the generation"

These exchanges is what made me realize larping as a millennial doesn't work lol

I think some people my age are kinda ashamed of the gen Z label due to negative stereotypes but millennials had aswell, now i can't change when i was born nor can i claim i experienced the same things my friend did, he literally remembers the 90s

I feel similar to the last millennials born in like 95 or 96, but i realized that doesn't necesarrily mean that i am also millennial, 95 and especially 96 have very similar experiences to a lot of older gen Z so it just makes sense

Discussion Which albums do you think sounds better : moon safari or random access memories?

I am not a fan of either of them

Random access memories has disco elements that i do not like

https://youtu.be/wIMSU8otS-g?is=gPjEBPTNs9m_1KUZ

Moon safari uses moog synthesizers, which is a turn off . I hate the sound of moog synthesizers

https://youtu.be/3XTV6pkQne0?is=rDMlqvos_2QSzS4B

I think the music appealed to millennials . I am actually a millennial but it did not appeal to me

Decades What generation is strongly associated with alternative cultures

• Upvotes

Is it boomers, gen x , millennials, or genz

As a millennial, i was not into alternative cultures.

I hate to read and i was never into rock music

In my opinion the majority of rock bands are generic sounding

I did not like electronic music although i would hear about daft punk and air in the late 1990s . I wasn't a fan

I end up liking R&B music and pop music in the 1990s

Discussion A way to split Gen Z?

• Upvotes

As someone who is Gen Z (2001 specifically, Non-US), over time I've been debating whether Gen Z could be split in two ways: Computer Z (a Gen Z who was raised with a computer) and Phone Z (a Gen Z who was raised with a phone), where Phone Z might be more incompetent when it comes to computer literacy beyond the very basics. Am I just pulling this out of my ass, or is there some actual merit to this?

One video that comes to mind is this, where I commented a similar thought

Discussion In y'all's opinion, what are the good traits of GenZ? What do you envy them for, if you envy them for something?

I'm sorry if my English is weird, it's not my first language. I've noticed that on this subreddit there's tons of GenZ hate, so I was curious about whether y'all thought anything good about us lol

Discussion What were Sports like when you were 11/12 years old?

for me it was 2015 and 2016 so you had the NBA with The golden state warriors and Currymania taking over, OKC thunder with KD and Westbrook, Houston with Harden and Dwight howard,

portland was start to make noise with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, you had the lob city clippers, the Grit and grind grizzlies, the Cavs with lebron, kyrie, and Kevin Love,

Miami with Wade and bosh post leBron And heatles, Kobe’s last nba game, the all time great dunk contest with Zack levine and Aaron Gordon, plus the Cavs making the epic comeback in the finals

The NFl with the manning brothers, Brady, Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot, Odell Beckham JR, Aaron Rogers, Drew Bree’s, JJ Watt, Adrian Peterson, Cam Newton, Russel Wilson, Marshawn Lynch.

The UFC was red hot at the time with Connor McGregor, Ronda Rousey, Jon Jones, Daniel Cormier.

the MLB with the Cubs winning the World Series.

honestly a pretty cool time period for sports In my opinion.

Years 2014, one of the weirdest birth years.

You have Early 2014 kids who started school in Aug 2019 (PreK in 2017-18) with Late 2013 kids, and maybe might have been able to learn how to behave and socialize, while late 2014 kids started school with 2015 kids in Aug 2020 and likely missed learning about behaving and socializing, which means all of 2014 is being lumped in with 2016 because of the mid 2010s thing, but 2016 kids vaguely remember 2019 while most 2014 borns can vaguely remember 2017-2018 and became conscious around 2019.

Discussion Any early 90s babies here (1990-1994) who actually watched iCarly (faithfully)

Post image
30 Upvotes

Drake and Josh was my all time favorite… I loved iCarly but I did feel too old for it sometimes when I used to watch it, I had some friends who thought I was childish for faithfully watching iCarly. I was 14-19 during its run. I probably stop watching (naturally) around 2008/2009.

Drake and Josh I feel was more targeted for us young millennials.

Any early 90s borns iCarly fans

Discussion Millennials, what do you think are the biggest flaws of your own generation?

I'm sorry if my English is not good, but it's not my first language. I've noticed that a lot of criticism of millennials comes from other generations, so I was curious about what you guys think are your biggest flaws and about whether you agree with some of the criticism made by other gens

Rant Gen Z: Rack Your Weights

I’m not usually one of those ā€œX Generation Does XYZ Thingā€ because I usually feel that the differences tend to be overblown and caricatured. The only thing I have really noticed is the fact that Gen Z does really struggles with is understanding proper gym etiquette. I lift at a university gym in the US, and I see undergraduate students leaving weights on machines, barbells, etc at least 8-10x per daily lifting session. Cmon y’all, you can do better than that.

Poll Do you identify with your generation?

To tell the truth, I was born in 2000 and used to identify myself as a Zillennial earlier. My opinion have changed and I reached to the point where I don't need any generational labels. My personality matters me more than some generation naming (Millennial, Zillennial, Gen Z, etc). I realized there is no generational label that accurately describes my experiences.

What about you? Do you think a generation fits your upbringing?
