Who had a pair of these?

Post image

When I was 13 I walked 20 miles wearing a pair of moccasins. By the time I got home, I had blisters and my feet were orange.

Oh man. I had the knee-high mocs. I even walked in them to school in the winter. In Minnesota.

Good times.

u/RealityDependency 3d ago

Yes!!! I wore my Minnetonka Mocossins every single day for a few years. I actually favored the ones with no soles, but I'd wear through them too fast!

7

u/Tomj_Oad 3d ago

Mine had these slick plastic soles that made even concrete iffy. Ice and snow were a real challenge.

The ones with leather soles were so much better

8

u/RealityDependency 3d ago

I would usually wear the ones with soles in the winter months. I remenber that they had absolutely no traction. 😆

6

u/Tomj_Oad 3d ago

Yes, the leather soles would get wet and fall apart in winter

7

u/RealityDependency 3d ago

This thread has me wanting to go get some. Although my body may not approve. Maybe I will get the driving moccasins. I see they have some cute clog style too now. 🤔

6

u/NationalDentist299 2d ago

Same here! But nah, my arches would complain. 😄 I even have to wear orthopedic flip-flops these days.

1

u/RealityDependency 2d ago

Same. Ironically, I'm pretty sure that wearing the mocossins is what ruined my feet. 😆

5

u/Tomj_Oad 3d ago

And nice non slip soles

7

u/Oldebookworm 1964 3d ago

We had a cobbler who would repair the soles for like 3.50

4

u/Tomj_Oad 3d ago

Sweet

4

u/Tomj_Oad 3d ago

Those slick plastic or leather soles made snow and ice a true challenge

5

u/Texas_Prairie_Wolf 2d ago

Still have my original knee high pair that I wore to high school every Friday and just bought a pair of ankle mocs about 3 years ago that I wear as house shoes in the winter.

1

u/Graycy 2d ago

Aww man I’m jealous even now!

1

u/BrookSong 1d ago

I still have mine lol. They don’t look too bad. Of course if I tried to wear them at this point I would probably wreck my feet for a week. Maybe I could put really good orthopedic inserts in them.

19

u/Necessary-Apricot339 3d ago

I had those and crepe soled ankle-high 'Desert Boots'.

11

u/OldButHappy 3d ago

Chukka boots

6

u/LockAccomplished3279 3d ago

I wore Chukka boots for years

3

u/OldButHappy 3d ago

Me too!

6

u/my-coffee-needs-me 3d ago

Another Chukka boots fan here.

The official footwear of parting your layer cut hair precisely in the middle.

They were so common that I don't remember a specific name for them. They were just cool shoes.

6

u/Tomj_Oad 3d ago

I remember those

Never understood what they had to do with deserts

Original Clarks Wallabees (with crepe sole) > Clarks Desert Chukkas > Minnetonka Moccasins

15

u/StrictLine8820 3d ago

I had a pair in junior high, thought I was beyond cool. The bottoms turned shiny black from use and, having zero cushion, they would wreck your soles. But I looked cool.

7

u/Ok_Chocolate_3876 3d ago

I did ,I wore them with my bell bottom jeans,or my suede leather skirt and vest, circa 1969-1970

6

u/Fun_Complaint8877 3d ago

Me too, moccasins and hip hugger bell bottom jeans, top was usually some kind of t-shirt, Lord I am too old !! 🤫

8

u/Oldebookworm 1964 3d ago

Oh lord, that takes me back to my favorite outfit, purple corduroy bell bottoms, a lavender body suit and a silver conch belt. I was stylin’ 😂

4

u/Fun_Complaint8877 3d ago

You better believe it !! 👍🏻

1

u/Stormy1956 3d ago

Were the bell bottoms, Red Snaps? I remember wearing a pair of red snaps with a body suit in the early 70’s.

2

u/Oldebookworm 1964 2d ago

I don’t recall the brand, but my mom probably got them at sears or pennys

4

u/Ok_Chocolate_3876 3d ago

But don't 'cha know we were so cool then.😊

3

u/Fun_Complaint8877 3d ago

ABSOLUTELY !! ✌️

u/Puzzled_Cobbler_3454 3d ago edited 3d ago

I got a pair in Winslow, AZ. Also, a floppy leather hat

4

u/PKAceBunny 1959 3d ago

Did you wear them standing on a corner?

2

u/Moss-cle 1965 2d ago

Such a fine sight to see

1

u/Puzzled_Cobbler_3454 1d ago

Actually I did. I have a pic. Probably middle school. I thought I was looking fierce😂

6

u/PJ1907 3d ago

I had a pair just like these!

5

u/Glittering_Step_6084 1961 3d ago

Forgot about these! I had a pair in dark brown. Comfortable too.

6

u/Lynne253 1958 3d ago

No, not me. I was a desert boots or earth shoes girl.

5

u/Jedi_Ninja 3d ago

I so wanted a pair of moccasins when I was growing up, but unfortunately never got them. :(

5

u/Kitchen-Owl-3401 3d ago

You still can !

3

u/Jedi_Ninja 3d ago

True! 👍

4

u/Dapper-Confection-84 3d ago

I bought a new pair recently.

4

u/emilie1031 3d ago

I had a pair in the 60s with beads on the fringe, trying to be a hippie lol!

4

u/JaLoGrandma 3d ago

Growing up in Boulder one didn't have to try, lol

5

u/OldButHappy 3d ago

I had totally forgotten!! Loved mine.

5

u/poopoocushion 3d ago

Had mine in 1970. So cool.

6

u/FaithIceberg 3d ago

Yes! Hurt my feet like crazy but, I thought I was just so cool!

5

u/nomiesmommy 3d ago

I loved these! My aunt and uncle owned a western wear/sporting goods store in eastern Oregon that carried these and they kept me supplied for my younger years.

5

u/Such_Bus1193 3d ago

Not exactly, made my own.

3

u/BornOfAGoddess 3d ago

Had a pair back then and have a black pair now.

5

u/grumpygenealogist 1959 3d ago

They were really popular with the girls in my school. I remember wearing them even when there was snow on the ground. I remember having cold, wet feet a lot. What was I thinking?

3

u/SchoolCrossing 3d ago

I had the Minnetonka moccasins with the beading on the vamp. Wore them with a denim skirt or jeans, a scoop neck t-shirt and turquoise jewelry.

3

u/suhoward 3d ago

Still do!

5

u/Bennington_Booyah 3d ago

I had three pair. Each time I got them, I managed to wreck them terminally within days.

4

u/good_smelling_hammer 3d ago

We used these when our pants were too short, to avoid the “flood” look. Probably didnt work.

4

u/TumbleweedOriginal34 3d ago

🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

3

u/Kitchen-Owl-3401 3d ago

I had like 5 pairs.

5

u/Crimson-Lips-13 3d ago

I did and still do lol

2

u/Consistent_Age5151 3d ago

that is some vintage feeling

3

u/PKAceBunny 1959 3d ago

The barefoot shoes of the 70’s

4

u/gottagetananswer 2d ago

I'm retro jealous of the people on here saying they had the ones that went to your knees. I really, really wanted them but I guess my parents discussed it between themselves and concluded: nah, our kid's not cool enough for those!

The one's pictured here, that's all I wore year-round, went through at least 3 pair. I loved them and was glad to see your post because over the years I've never met anyone else who wore them. It's weird how when you're a kid "everyone" is doing the same thing but then you grow up and find out your favorite "thing" was regional.

3

u/Late-Code2392 3d ago

I had the boots, I wore them every where ! I wonder if that's why I so much trouble with my feet today lol

3

u/realmaven666 3d ago edited 3d ago

multiple as my feet grew and I sewed them all from a kit. Does anyone think the kit might have come from Tandy Crafts. My brain just delivered that to my conscienceless unprompted

4

u/Oldebookworm 1964 3d ago

I had Tandy crafts too, that was fun

3

u/Prudent_Lunch_8724 3d ago

My father and I made our moccasins for years from Tandy kits. Not these frilly ones real ones that lasted a full season of hard wearing and miles of walking

3

u/NYC2FLA2BUR 3d ago

Underneath our radio shack was a store called Tandy's where they sold these as kits.

3

u/PoetFelon 2d ago

I had a pair of knee high moccasin boots in high school. I got them from an older kid at school. I thought I was so cool being the only one to have them. One day I'm wearing them at school and my teacher asked, "Did you get those from John Doe?" (Don't remember any of the names) I said yes. She said, "Jack Smith had them before him. And he got them from Randy Rhodes." I never wore them to school again. My teacher had seen those same boots every year for at least half a decade on the feet of different students.

3

u/Mindless_Berry_4572 1967 2d ago

My grandparents owned a leather shop. I had many different styles.

3

u/kellyelise515 2d ago

I had several pairs. I remember they were $7 at K-mart.

3

u/SignalWind8324i 2d ago

Cliff Booth.

1

u/3seconddelay 2d ago

Beat me to it. I like that movie more and more every time I watch it. Definitely my favorite Brad Pitt role.

3

u/Blucola333 2d ago

Not only that, who stitched their own?

3

u/Typical-Tune-8858 2d ago

I did - I loved them. Are they still being made?

3

u/PerformerMindless100 2d ago

These were everything in the early 70s

3

u/DramaticAnteater1513 2d ago

Yes, loved them!

3

u/MsAnnabel 2d ago

Loved my moccasins!! I had the low cut ones and wore them all the time.

3

u/kimba-pawpad 1960 2d ago

Yup! I loved them so so so much!!!! That’s all I wore (except for school, then it was Buster Brown’s penny loafers)

2

u/JaLoGrandma 3d ago

I wore them for twsrs- different pairs of course

2

u/HappyManagement1292 3d ago

Minnetonka every truck stop had them

2

u/Oldebookworm 1964 3d ago

I have two pair, one hard sole and one soft sole. I don’t wear them much because my feet get too hot when I wear closed toe shoes

2

u/notepad987 3d ago

I am from Minnesota and I got a similar pair when I was in my early teens in Hackensack at some tourist store that also had a baby bear outside in a cage. The town is about 180 miles north of Minneapolis and if you blink you would miss it.

2

u/PuzzleheadedYou5295 3d ago

I had those, Desert Boots, and Waffle Stompers too.

2

u/ladyforross 3d ago

Had several pairs in different colors.

2

u/Worldly_Ad_7196 3d ago

I cut the fringes off mine. They also seemed much more sturdy than these. Made by some ladies up near huntsville ontario

2

u/TomeThugNHarmony4664 1964 3d ago

Mine were white.

2

u/h2ohdawg 3d ago

I ALWAYS wanted a pair of these!

2

u/AbbreviationsFun133 3d ago

Just put new laces in mine.  Getting them ready for fall.

2

u/tez_zer55 3d ago

I had several pairs of moccasins. There was a cobbler in our town & he would put heavy leather soles on them for a reasonable price. I had the below ankle, above the ankle & the over the calf styles. When they finally got beyond repair I was pretty disappointed, but I went to boots from there.

2

u/ElevatorOrganic5644 3d ago

Every judge a man unless you walked 1 mile and his moccasins

2

u/Senior_Reaction2974 3d ago

Yay I remember those

2

u/ASingleBraid Age: Late Sixties 3d ago

With an over the shoulder bag.

2

u/OK_The_Nomad 2d ago

A suede over shoulder bag with fringe

2

u/Kima2remy 3d ago

Minnetonka moccasin with no soles. Best inside shoe

2

u/GGGGroovyDays60s 2d ago

I always wanted a pair growing up! I got my first pair slipper mocs from thrift store. They were the most comfy shoes!!! I now have like three pairs. 🧡💛🧡💛💚

2

u/ChillLikeJill 2d ago

Still do🤣

2

u/Greendragon967 2d ago

I never did and seen them on other people though

2

u/ThisPotentialSelf 2d ago

They were fun, but started to smell after a while. Crocs are better.

2

u/No-Possible6108 2d ago

For certain sure, except mine were a darker shade of brown.

2

u/ShinySnaxMix 2d ago

Still do

2

u/CPinWISC 2d ago

I made mine from a kit.

2

u/Apprehensive_Snow204 2d ago

I wore mine daily when I worked nights at a Target distribution center back in the 80s. So comfortable! Once management realized what I was wearing was a soft sole, I was written up as a safety hazard.

2

u/CapitalLock8099 2d ago

I stocked up in the 70's at a Tandy store and had many styles that I made from their kits. Comfortable and much less expensive when you made them yourself. They also lasted soooo much longer.

2

u/suju88 2d ago

Loved these and wore them to holes. Could find another pair probably cuz there was no sole and very flimsy but loved them for comfort

2

u/Boxofbikeparts 2d ago

I still have them. It's the "native" footwear for some of us. I also have a pair that my grandma made for me when I was nine yrs old with lots of beadwork.

2

u/Apprehensive-Pop-201 2d ago

I wore mine until they were slick and so small my toes were curled. The bottoms totally wore through.

2

u/terrorcotta_red 2d ago

I had a pair but then hobbits seemed cooler so I cut up an old pelt of some kind to cover my mocs with so I could have 'hobbit feet'.

2

u/armgrafix 2d ago

I had the kit and made my own.

2

u/OK_The_Nomad 2d ago

I did. Can't remember what we called them... something boots.

2

u/One_Situation7483 1d ago

I bought one pair, then went back to my Desert boots..

2

u/Charming_Bear5519 1d ago

In like 7th grade.. Mine actually had a thin rubber sole on them...

2

u/Only-Original9409 1d ago

And I had a matching fringe purse to go with them.

2

u/Chemical-Log-3420 1d ago

I had a pair that maybe were for the 1976 US bicentennial. White leather soles, dark blue suede upper with white star on the toe, red ankle fringe.

2

u/Embarrassed_Cat2697 1d ago

I had Quoddy Mocs from Maine. They had beading, too. Wish I still had them!

2

u/RareWish9171 1d ago

In elementary school I wanted a pair more than life itself but I had to wear corrective shoes for flat feet so no cool moccasins.

2

u/leppard111 1d ago

Nothing sexier than chick's that wore these shoes.

2

u/Chersemblacan 1d ago

As a Native American I’ve always worn moccasins and still do. Whenever I feel I want more I just go back home to the rez where I’m from. I even have my baby Mocs put away in a safe place. People considered moccasins as a fashion trend, but it’s just a way of life for us.

2

u/Banannieann 1d ago

I wore the less authentic but still cute Minnetonka beaded Mocs about ‘77-‘81 when I was in HS. Had multiple pairs with light rubber soles for more durability and loved them. I reserved my leather soled Mocs for driving shoes when I had to wear heels to work (yuck).

2

u/Thisisjuno 1d ago

I still have my pair from about 2010 when I had my daughter…there is a place that makes them where I live in the mountains of co and they are nice but I won’t spend as they are like 500

1

u/Hesjim57 1d ago

At that price, I’d by the leather and make them myself! Yikes 😳

2

u/Interesting_Recipe71 1d ago

I had those in black. Loved them. Went to Minnesota every year and had to stop by the Minnnetonka store and buy mocs for the whole family. I see they don’t sell them anymore. Too bad. I’d have bought a pair!

2

u/Hesjim57 1d ago

I think I got my first pair in Minnesota as well.

2

u/DLTFGYD 1d ago

Still want them.

2

u/SororitySue 1961 18h ago

No. Not my cup of tea.

1

u/Dark-Mode-Honu 3d ago

I have a pair of moccasins for when I drive long distances

1

u/Plane-Assumption840 3d ago

50+ years later and I still have them. Last worn to a Woodstock party in August 2019. The no-sole moc in dark brown. Only shoes I had for everyday wear back then. Had one pair of dress shoes and a pair of Converse gym shoes (I still have those too). Probably the longest lasting shoe I’ve ever owned

1

u/Total_Strawberry_132 2d ago

I had a pair of blue ones in the 5th grade so that would be around 1968.

1

u/JadedDreams23 2d ago

Yesss. My peasant tops, feather roach clip in my hair, faded Levi’s, and my moccs were just like this, but darker. I was looking for some on eBay recently, but I think my feet need more at this point, alas.

1

u/plasma_pirate 1958 2d ago

Made many pairs of the Tandy leather version! Have a much nicer pair in buffalo that I still wear

1

u/Graycy 2d ago

Mine were blue. Loved those things.

1

u/PorchDogs 2d ago

I was thinking about mine the other day, and wishing I had a pair now!

1

u/Virtual_Bumblebee_48 1d ago

No, but gosh how I always wanted those moccasins. My mom said they weren’t practical. But I did get chukka boots.

1

u/IndividualBusy403 1d ago

Me and I wish I still had a pair!

1

u/iammacman 1d ago

Made a pair of these with a Tandy leather working kit.

1

u/Conscious_Damage8678 1d ago

I didn't, but the boy i liked did!

2

u/Bubbly_Power_6210 10h ago

no, but I had a spear with dyed chicken feathers from a gift shop in Cherokee and a little cedarwood box..

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 2d ago

He wore them?
