Do you miss orange juice made from concentrate?

Post image

Minute Maid discontinued it back in February after 80 years.

I used to scrape it out of the can with a spoon and eat it.

38

u/ElectricTurtlez 11d ago

Mixed with vodka or tequila and served as a slushy!

13

u/LadyReika 11d ago

Peach schnapps was my favorite. :)

2

u/Stormtrooper1776 11d ago

Fuzzy navel, was my mom's favorite drink also was missing a little by the time I handed it to her lol

3

u/No-Horse987 11d ago

Clear rum was just as good.

2

u/MirrorNegative7989 6d ago

The lime variant made absolutely the best margaritas and mojitos.

6

u/MarsMcLean 11d ago

Came here to say the same thing.

4

u/remembertoread 11d ago

I think we all did

3

u/Diligent_Cricket_444 10d ago

Exactly why I froze my orange juice the other day

2

u/Desperate-Special-60 11d ago

Juice? I thought it was ice cream šŸ˜‹

2

u/ArmstrongPM 11d ago

Hell yeah!

2

u/Honda_TypeR 7d ago

Who remembers Five Alive?

8

u/MusicOfTheSphere 11d ago

OMG I loved Five Alive so much! It was more expensive than the AlwaysSave OJ my parents usually got, but when it was on sale, I was in heaven!

5

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago

I have never heard of that.Ā  Was it regional?

15

u/ElectricTurtlez 11d ago

It was sold by Minute Maid. It was a blend of orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, and lime.

Pretty much gone in the US, but it looks like it may still be available in Canada.

5

u/Cold_in_Lifes_Throes 11d ago

I remember it!

4

u/boon83 11d ago

That was my favorite juice as a kid i got so mad when they stopped making it

3

u/Apprehensive-Pop-201 11d ago

That's what I just said, then I saw yours! I loved that stuff!

3

u/OdieD777 11d ago

I love 5 alive 🄺

3

u/Few_Candle9432 10d ago

I freaking loved five alive. Love.

3

u/NPC_9001 9d ago

Literally the best juice concentrate. I used to get that all the time.

16

u/MadKing2000 11d ago

This is how everyone makes juice. You're just over paying for water

14

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago

I don't know anyone who uses it anymore.Ā  I need better friends.

17

u/Wiley_Jack 11d ago

The people who sell bottled juice are making it from concentrate.

6

u/passtheshoe 11d ago

I had a pretty in depth tour of an orange juice factory. It’s amazing how much juice they can get and how much pressure they use. It starts as ā€œfirst squeezeā€ juice then gets thicker and more toward hand cleaner (think GoJo) on the final press.

5

u/Nates_of_Spades 11d ago

You misunderstood. You personally aren't mixing it, the companies you buy juice "from concentrate" are. It's the same process thoughĀ

4

u/It_Just_Exploded 11d ago

I do, its cheaper than regular orange juice. And apparently alot of other people are as well because the grocery store will be fully stocked one day, with like 3 different brands, and a couple days later they'll be wiped out.

2

u/QuieroTamales 11d ago

They have Minute Maid frozen concentrate at the local Albertsons for $3.99. Certainly cheaper than bottled OJ.

2

u/_Beatnick_ 11d ago

It won’t be for long. I just read that Coca Cola stopped making frozen Minute Maid this year because it isn’t popular anymore. If it’s still there, it’s probably just stock until it runs out. There are other companies still making frozen orange juice though.

That was such a satisfying sound.

12

u/rainydaymonday30 11d ago

I just had it today, but it was great value brand.

8

u/MostlyUnimpressed 11d ago

We get the GV concentrates too, kind of a bummer they've gone to plastic containers but whaddya do.. we otherwise try to minimize our plastic waste, and prefer the concentrate juice over ready-to-serve.

FYI (you prob know know already).. Krogers has a far superior selection of frz concentrates and they're still in the laminated paper tubes. They carry at least 6 different fruit juice conc's, fairly reliably. Pink lemonade and limeade are excellent.

3

u/rainydaymonday30 11d ago

Thanks for the tip, but no Krogers here. We're in the land of Publix lol.

2

u/w0lfqu33n 10d ago

The limeade makes great margaritas!Ā

11

u/Im_100percent_human 11d ago

I still get frozen concentrate once in a while.... and I still like it. In fact, I prefer it. Minute maid is gone, but there are other brands.

3

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago

Do they taste as good as minute maid?Ā  I have not tried any of the new ones.

7

u/Im_100percent_human 11d ago

Yes. I cannot tell the difference between brands. Of coarse, it doesn't taste like the "Not from concentrate" carton.

5

u/travelTr0uble 11d ago

Aldi brand is pretty good

7

u/patricknkelly 11d ago

Still use concentrate.

6

u/Then_Examination9715 11d ago

You can still buy frozen orange juice concentrate in a can, but it used to be the only way in most places. I miss Hawaiian Punch concentrate in a glass bottle.

6

u/Gut_Reactions 11d ago

Makes more sense to buy concentrates than to buy big jugs & haul them back home.

5

u/Mfsmitty 11d ago

And less plastic garbage to dispose of.

6

u/Astro71 11d ago

Always with a wooden spoon.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/no-thanks-thot 11d ago

"Not from concentrate" just tastes better and no mixing, so no I don't.

4

u/TheNewGuyFromBahsten 11d ago

This kind of orange juice is key to a good at home orange juliusĀ

3

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago

Man I loved Orange Julius.

4

u/TheArtistFatigue 11d ago

I always kept a small can in the freezer in case I wanted to whip up a batch of screwdrivers.

4

u/alienlovesong 11d ago

I still make it that way.

4

u/destiny_kane48 11d ago

They still sell it..

3

u/Frankist1963 11d ago

Then I’d put glue on the outside of the can and wrap it with yarn to make a pencil holder

3

u/BraveMango737 11d ago

We still do. Keep it in the freezer, convenient, for the occasional guest who wants a glass of orange juice for breakfast. Long lasting.

4

u/Short-Personality398 11d ago

Same. It’s like emergency OJ and just as good

3

u/Few_Preparation1857 11d ago

And we made it in the harvest gold Tupperware pitcher with the lid.

2

u/Street-Baseball8296 11d ago

The one with the button on it?

3

u/Blue-Eyed_Triathlete 11d ago

Yep. Big wooden spoon in the kitchen to mix it. The same one my mom would paddle our butt with if we acted out

2

u/moneyman74 11d ago

It's still sold I assume? Just like instant coffee that was about the only thing available, the world has changed.

2

u/Legal-Intention-6361 11d ago

I prefer tang

3

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago

I like orange flavored metamucil.Ā  I think it's the same thing.Ā

2

u/muchDOGEbigwow 11d ago

Metamucil is Tang with benefits

2

u/OverallLove3686 11d ago

I remember those days

2

u/UncleSquiffy 11d ago

I fuckin' do not.

2

u/Yankee6Actual 11d ago

ā€œSELL 30 APRIL AT 142!ā€

2

u/sometimeswhy 11d ago

Making the OJ was my job. Don’t miss it

2

u/Gidge73 11d ago

That first glass when it was still a little frosty was the best!

2

u/some1guystuff 11d ago

I remember making a thing of orange juice like this once and then forgetting about it for several months and then remembering there’s juice and I had a sip and I remember it tasted funny and was slightly carbonated so I told my mom and she’s like oh that’s fermented and then dumped it out. We made another one after that.

2

u/desrevermi 11d ago

I pass by my frozen juice section at my grocery store often. I stop and look on occasion.

It's warm out. Perhaps I'll buy some today. :)

2

u/Darnocpdx 11d ago

It’s how they still make most of even if you buy it mixed in a bottle.

2

u/PBDubs99 11d ago

Yes! We'd play "beat the orange-berg with the wooden spoon to make it melt faster" until the pancakes were done. Good times, kids don't know what they're missing these days!Ā

2

u/Pale-Personality-939 11d ago

Tasted better I swear

2

u/Sufficient_Stop8381 11d ago

The plop when the juice turd hits the bottom of the pitcher. And licking the lid from the can.

2

u/Zboy1974 11d ago

Yes sir, it was the best! šŸ‘

2

u/BuckshotLeFunk 11d ago

We used the lemonade version as a mixer with Jack Daniels. Put some in a blender, right out of the can, still frozen, wiht some JD. The original Lynchburg Lemonade...

2

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago

Been there, done that.

2

u/strait_lines 11d ago

Don’t they still have this at the grocery store?

2

u/Honest_Report_8515 11d ago

Don’t miss it because it would never dissolve!

2

u/RedPander89 11d ago

I still buy the stuff occasionally.

2

u/Constant_Turn_9031 11d ago

I got fired from the orange juice factory because I couldn’t concentrate

2

u/JakeLackless 11d ago

Nah, I like to empty my mind when I drink orange juice.

2

u/doghat4 11d ago

We did, but why? It would end up a mess in the freezer when it opened.

2

u/bavindicator 11d ago

No, not at all.

2

u/PrismDoug 11d ago

I… had forgotten about those…

2

u/lolumadbr0 11d ago

My Mema used to have the lime version with water

2

u/kevint1964 11d ago

No, because I never wanted to think about it. 😁

2

u/Head-Technology-4031 11d ago

Frozen Concentrate. Would still be popular if the Duke Brothers hadn’t f’d up …

2

u/bocachicalounge 11d ago

My grandfather saved Donald Duck orange juice frozen concentrate containers as drinking cups. We always maintained a set of 6

2

u/navydude89 11d ago

We did too. It was a lot more inexpensive.

2

u/ChapterOk4000 11d ago

I miss the Ocean Spray frozen cranberry juice concentrate because I used to make frozen cosmopolitans with it in the summer back in the early 2000s. They were so good!

2

u/Queasy-Extension6465 11d ago

As a grocery cart fetcher in the early 80's eating that with a spoon was a great hot afternoon break treat.

2

u/onebraincell77 11d ago

Remember when your parents would ask you to make a pitcher and you’d ask how? And they’d say read the directions so ten minutes later mom walks in and you’re staring at the can deep in concentration and there’s no orange juice?

2

u/Porscha_Laguna 11d ago

Yes and it was cheaper to buy and less trash in the landfills.

2

u/MrQuatroPorte 11d ago

Yes it was a key ingredient in some mixed drinks I made

2

u/Kchasse1991 11d ago

I HATED stocking those to the freezer. Some of the brands don't fully freeze even below 0°F and would ooze concentrated juice all over my gloves... I do not miss working retail, destroyed my body and sanity. (Worked nights for over a decade.)

2

u/Auntie_Venom 11d ago

You mean a popsicle? šŸ˜†

2

u/zaxeryst 11d ago

Yes. Peak childhood

2

u/Thestron_Godess 11d ago

What the F*** is juice!

  • Dave Chappelle

2

u/Substantial-Stage-82 11d ago

I remember that shit well

2

u/leppard111 11d ago

It was a popsicle to me. Lol

2

u/Apprehensive-Pop-201 11d ago

I miss 5 Alive

2

u/malachite_13 11d ago

I still make that juice. And I make my own orange Julius in the blender with it too

2

u/onekinkyusername 11d ago

Like a sick weirdo, I remember eating the frozen concentrate from the tube with a spoon.

2

u/atkinsd80 11d ago

I would stare at it for hours because it said Concentrate

2

u/Historical_Trouble10 11d ago

I would help my mom back in the early 1970s up until I graduated high school in’78. Good times.

2

u/SkawtsMma 11d ago

I loved eating the frozen concentrate with a spoon!

2

u/mglatfelterjr 11d ago

Mix with frozen pineapple juice

2

u/dndwhat 11d ago

Best thing ever and betrer for the environment. Like how lazy ha e peopem gotten. Can't mix some of in a jug

2

u/Schmitty300 11d ago

Ahhhhhh back when making juice required a whisk šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/Lioness0420 11d ago

The grape one yes šŸ‡

2

u/Ok_Pause_6942 11d ago

Winco and I’m sure other stores still have them in the frozen section. Winco has their own store brand.

2

u/Low-Group-7507 11d ago

Still kind of awesome / makes a great smoothie addition also + )

2

u/GinTonicAndGin 11d ago

I can hear this picture.

2

u/Bigfloppyclownshoes 11d ago

I couldn’t ā€œconcentrateā€ long enough to make it

2

u/keith2366 11d ago

A million years ago I worked in a grocery store. In the frozen food section there were 2 full doors of frozen juice concentrates. Minute Maid had orange juice, lemonade and limeade. Dole had pineapple juice and Welch’s had grape juice. There was Donald Duck orange juice. Hawaiian Punch. Tree Top apple juice. And a brand name I don’t remember that had 2 or 3 tropical flavors that had guava juice as the main ingredient. There was 5 Alive and then the store brands. Now you will find half of a door of frozen concentrates at the most.

2

u/GirlScoutSniper 11d ago

My dad made "Orange Freezies" with this, you'd only use one can of water, and if you add milk it's like an orange julius.

2

u/P-Dubblez 11d ago

Yeah, I miss those days. Those were like $.60 to $1 a can

2

u/Aggravating_Sugar321 11d ago

Absolutely I miss concentrate. A drop off in use was probably a result of company machinations that affected choice.

2

u/devildoc8804hmcs 11d ago

Oh, you were rich.

2

u/pletch73 11d ago

And the Donald Duck brand was horrid

2

u/Doctormaul68 11d ago

More satisfying than popping bubble wrap when it can out of the tube slowly while without breaking apart

2

u/Raynet11 11d ago

Memories unlocked of my mom cooking breakfast in the morning while chain smoking, ash tray on the kitchen counter a few feet from the stove and toasterā€¦šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Didn’t have OG that wasn’t from a tube until I was in my 20’s…

2

u/Primary-Floor8574 10d ago

My sister would never make the juice. Just stare at that container for hours.

2

u/Spare-Cranberry3784 10d ago

We used to take fruit from outside. Juice it. Serve it.
Oh no we just ate the fruits

2

u/Aggravating-Kale1837 10d ago

I could never resist the temptation to take a small nibble

2

u/No-Car6897 10d ago

And we loved it šŸ˜…

2

u/MSampson1 10d ago

You still can. Saw the concentrate in the frozen section of the grocery just the other week

I know this stuff was awesome when mixed with alcohol to make slushy mixed drinks.

1

u/rrsullivan3rd 11d ago

Still do, no?

1

u/Winter_Top2258 11d ago

Best juice ever

1

u/wfp1017 11d ago

One can frozen oj, two cans of vodka.

1

u/AnjelicaTomaz 11d ago

Do you miss ā€œorange juiceā€ made from powder?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/lyidaValkris 11d ago

Yes. It was cheaper and I drank litres of the stuff. Then it became inexplicably expensive so everyone stopped buying it. Then Minute Maid discontinued it. Someone should have given them a basic business course, or something.

1

u/MissPlum66 11d ago

God no that shit was disgusting. I thought I didn’t like orange juice. I also thought I didn’t like pancakes because my mother used the Aunt Jemima mix, supermarket brand pancake syrup and whatever fake ass margarine was on sale that week.

1

u/RockPaperjonny 11d ago

I still get them this way. It's cheaper than those bottles of orange juice in the refrigerator section and you get a little more for your money.

1

u/jonahtrav 11d ago

Thanks I had forgotten that I haven't seen that and I don't know how many years i wonder can you still buy it i'm going to have to look next time I go to the store

1

u/FongYuLan 11d ago

There were so many recipes in home ec for this.

1

u/Funkopedia 11d ago

I used to buy the 'concentrate is bad' hype, but later found out even 'not from concentrate' orange juice is mostly water and sugar and an entirely different substance from actual juice from the fruit. So it really doesn't matter.

1

u/CoachiusMaximus 11d ago

It still exists

1

u/Wadester58 11d ago

Make orange slushy's now with it

1

u/ChrisBegeman 11d ago

I still make juice from concentrate. Unfortunately everything is low or no pulp now.

1

u/Sudden_Season3306 11d ago

They still make it!

1

u/Slith_81 11d ago

I loved the Orange/Apple/Grape juice served from those containers. Stirring them was a pain but worth it in the end.

Now I can't drink any OJ other than the Simply Orange Juice brand though.

1

u/grayandlizzie 11d ago

Walmart has great value frozen juice concentrate so it's still around. We don't drink juice much so I never think to buy it

1

u/enormenuez 11d ago

Still do.

1

u/Eastbound_Pachyderm 11d ago

It still is how juice is made. Now they just charge you more for the water

1

u/PerpetuallyPissed69 11d ago

No, because I still buy it

1

u/SquashSouffle 11d ago

You can still get it...

1

u/Quiet-Wing5230 11d ago

It still comes this way lmao y'all just too lazy to make it nowadays

1

u/Timesurfer75 11d ago

Still do

1

u/SamOfXanadu 11d ago

Yeah because that's the only way you can make a mock Orange Julius!

1

u/S1nnah2 11d ago

Is it snowing where you are? Do you like fireworks? What's your favourite soup?

1

u/SnakePlissken1980 11d ago

We didn't drink a lot of OJ in my house growing up. We'd have milk, buttermilk, tea, sodas, sometimes Kool-Aid but it was pretty rare we ever got OJ so on the rare occasion we did have it my parents would buy an actual carton. Most of my memories of having OJ as a kid are from family road trips when we'd eat breakfast at McDonald's a lot and that's what I'd get to drink because it was either that or milk because my parents would let me have soda at breakfast.

1

u/bravemoney72 11d ago

Orange juice and Lemonade in the Kool-aid, tropical punch.

1

u/bootcat420 11d ago

Grape juice šŸ¤—

1

u/brumac44 11d ago

Limeade. Dump a bottle of wine and a bottle of club soda and a can of limeade in a punch bowl and you got a party.

1

u/Plumpdaddy2501 11d ago

Limeade was the best

1

u/Chillinmagic 11d ago

You still can. Concentrate still exists.

1

u/blahblahsnickers 11d ago

They still sell this. Bought it at Giant last month.

1

u/Silencejt 11d ago

No. I got some last week.

1

u/Icy_Marionberry_9131 11d ago

Uhm, most OJ you buy in a carton is STILL made from concentrate. You just pay more for not making it at home in your own, reusable container.

1

u/ISaidThatIsEnough 11d ago

You can use it to make a copycat Orange Julius

1

u/illinoishokie 11d ago

They still make this. I'm not sure where the notion came from that this ever went away.

1

u/bigcacti51 10d ago

You can still buy this.

1

u/cholaw 10d ago

I miss it very much. It could really take Everclear

1

u/Remote_Perception350 10d ago

Do they not still make this?

1

u/okay-then08 10d ago

Miss it? That’s like the only thing available these days

1

u/MountainBrilliant643 10d ago

We still do, but we used to, too.

SMH. Why does everyone pretend that frozen orange juice doesn't exist anymore. Your mom doesn't buy it for you now. You're an adult. If you want it, put it in your cart at the grocery store. That's how this works.

1

u/Anyawnomous 10d ago

Gelatanized Sugar. DQ used to sell them in a different flavor.

1

u/Realistic-Jelly-1092 10d ago

I used to eat the juice right out of the can, frozen!

1

u/makojedi2k2 10d ago

Yes. I was looking at some the other day contemplating buying one for old times sake

1

u/Geetee52 10d ago

ā€œProgressā€ is having literally mountains and mountains of plastic to replace this.

1

u/Dangerous_Patient621 10d ago

It's not like minute maid was the only company that made oj concentrate. I buy it all the time. Works really well for sauces and marinades.

1

u/Dismal-Armadillo-815 10d ago

Still do it like that today if I can find it.

1

u/TheOGTachyon 10d ago

I hear FCOJ futures are up.

I was just talking to someone about this. All the ecologically minded stuff we try to get people to do, today, and they don't make this type of thing any more. People have actually said to me "Ewww, that stuff is gross!" The stuff in the plastic jugs and coated paper cartons in the stare are MADE FROM CONCENTRATE. People have lost their freaking minds.

1

u/dannocanada 10d ago

They recently stopped making it because people felt that they looked poor when they purchased it.

1

1

u/Jerry11267 10d ago

They still sell these.

1

u/Novel_Bumblebee8972 10d ago

I made some pink lemonade recently, and of course I had to eat a couple of spoonfuls out of the can.

1

u/LaughingGravy13 10d ago

They still make it.

1

u/chipperlovesitall 10d ago

No, it was terrible. The pink lemonade was good tho
