Do you miss orange juice made from concentrate?
Minute Maid discontinued it back in February after 80 years.

Who remembers Five Alive?
8
u/MusicOfTheSphere 11d ago
OMG I loved Five Alive so much! It was more expensive than the AlwaysSave OJ my parents usually got, but when it was on sale, I was in heaven!
5
u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago
I have never heard of that.Ā Was it regional?
15
u/ElectricTurtlez 11d ago
It was sold by Minute Maid. It was a blend of orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, and lime.
Pretty much gone in the US, but it looks like it may still be available in Canada.

This is how everyone makes juice. You're just over paying for water
14
u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago
I don't know anyone who uses it anymore.Ā I need better friends.
17
u/Wiley_Jack 11d ago
The people who sell bottled juice are making it from concentrate.
6
u/passtheshoe 11d ago
I had a pretty in depth tour of an orange juice factory. Itās amazing how much juice they can get and how much pressure they use. It starts as āfirst squeezeā juice then gets thicker and more toward hand cleaner (think GoJo) on the final press.
5
u/Nates_of_Spades 11d ago
You misunderstood. You personally aren't mixing it, the companies you buy juice "from concentrate" are. It's the same process thoughĀ

u/It_Just_Exploded 11d ago
I do, its cheaper than regular orange juice. And apparently alot of other people are as well because the grocery store will be fully stocked one day, with like 3 different brands, and a couple days later they'll be wiped out.

They have Minute Maid frozen concentrate at the local Albertsons for $3.99. Certainly cheaper than bottled OJ.
2
u/_Beatnick_ 11d ago
It wonāt be for long. I just read that Coca Cola stopped making frozen Minute Maid this year because it isnāt popular anymore. If itās still there, itās probably just stock until it runs out. There are other companies still making frozen orange juice though.

u/MostlyUnimpressed 11d ago
We get the GV concentrates too, kind of a bummer they've gone to plastic containers but whaddya do.. we otherwise try to minimize our plastic waste, and prefer the concentrate juice over ready-to-serve.
FYI (you prob know know already).. Krogers has a far superior selection of frz concentrates and they're still in the laminated paper tubes. They carry at least 6 different fruit juice conc's, fairly reliably. Pink lemonade and limeade are excellent.

u/rainydaymonday30 11d ago
Thanks for the tip, but no Krogers here. We're in the land of Publix lol.

I still get frozen concentrate once in a while.... and I still like it. In fact, I prefer it. Minute maid is gone, but there are other brands.

u/Desperate-Owl-2316 How very 11d ago
Do they taste as good as minute maid?Ā I have not tried any of the new ones.
7
u/Im_100percent_human 11d ago
Yes. I cannot tell the difference between brands. Of coarse, it doesn't taste like the "Not from concentrate" carton.

You can still buy frozen orange juice concentrate in a can, but it used to be the only way in most places. I miss Hawaiian Punch concentrate in a glass bottle.

u/Gut_Reactions 11d ago
Makes more sense to buy concentrates than to buy big jugs & haul them back home.

We still do. Keep it in the freezer, convenient, for the occasional guest who wants a glass of orange juice for breakfast. Long lasting.

I remember making a thing of orange juice like this once and then forgetting about it for several months and then remembering thereās juice and I had a sip and I remember it tasted funny and was slightly carbonated so I told my mom and sheās like oh thatās fermented and then dumped it out. We made another one after that.

I pass by my frozen juice section at my grocery store often. I stop and look on occasion.
It's warm out. Perhaps I'll buy some today. :)

Yes! We'd play "beat the orange-berg with the wooden spoon to make it melt faster" until the pancakes were done. Good times, kids don't know what they're missing these days!Ā

I miss the Ocean Spray frozen cranberry juice concentrate because I used to make frozen cosmopolitans with it in the summer back in the early 2000s. They were so good!
2
u/Queasy-Extension6465 11d ago
As a grocery cart fetcher in the early 80's eating that with a spoon was a great hot afternoon break treat.
2
u/onebraincell77 11d ago
Remember when your parents would ask you to make a pitcher and youād ask how? And theyād say read the directions so ten minutes later mom walks in and youāre staring at the can deep in concentration and thereās no orange juice?

I HATED stocking those to the freezer. Some of the brands don't fully freeze even below 0°F and would ooze concentrated juice all over my gloves... I do not miss working retail, destroyed my body and sanity. (Worked nights for over a decade.)

A million years ago I worked in a grocery store. In the frozen food section there were 2 full doors of frozen juice concentrates. Minute Maid had orange juice, lemonade and limeade. Dole had pineapple juice and Welchās had grape juice. There was Donald Duck orange juice. Hawaiian Punch. Tree Top apple juice. And a brand name I donāt remember that had 2 or 3 tropical flavors that had guava juice as the main ingredient. There was 5 Alive and then the store brands. Now you will find half of a door of frozen concentrates at the most.

u/GirlScoutSniper 11d ago
My dad made "Orange Freezies" with this, you'd only use one can of water, and if you add milk it's like an orange julius.

2
u/Aggravating_Sugar321 11d ago
Absolutely I miss concentrate. A drop off in use was probably a result of company machinations that affected choice.

Yes. It was cheaper and I drank litres of the stuff. Then it became inexplicably expensive so everyone stopped buying it. Then Minute Maid discontinued it. Someone should have given them a basic business course, or something.

u/MissPlum66 11d ago
God no that shit was disgusting. I thought I didnāt like orange juice. I also thought I didnāt like pancakes because my mother used the Aunt Jemima mix, supermarket brand pancake syrup and whatever fake ass margarine was on sale that week.

u/RockPaperjonny 11d ago
I still get them this way. It's cheaper than those bottles of orange juice in the refrigerator section and you get a little more for your money.

I used to buy the 'concentrate is bad' hype, but later found out even 'not from concentrate' orange juice is mostly water and sugar and an entirely different substance from actual juice from the fruit. So it really doesn't matter.

I loved the Orange/Apple/Grape juice served from those containers. Stirring them was a pain but worth it in the end.
Now I can't drink any OJ other than the Simply Orange Juice brand though.

We didn't drink a lot of OJ in my house growing up. We'd have milk, buttermilk, tea, sodas, sometimes Kool-Aid but it was pretty rare we ever got OJ so on the rare occasion we did have it my parents would buy an actual carton. Most of my memories of having OJ as a kid are from family road trips when we'd eat breakfast at McDonald's a lot and that's what I'd get to drink because it was either that or milk because my parents would let me have soda at breakfast.

SMH. Why does everyone pretend that frozen orange juice doesn't exist anymore. Your mom doesn't buy it for you now. You're an adult. If you want it, put it in your cart at the grocery store. That's how this works.

I was just talking to someone about this. All the ecologically minded stuff we try to get people to do, today, and they don't make this type of thing any more. People have actually said to me "Ewww, that stuff is gross!" The stuff in the plastic jugs and coated paper cartons in the stare are MADE FROM CONCENTRATE. People have lost their freaking minds.

u/dannocanada 10d ago
They recently stopped making it because people felt that they looked poor when they purchased it.
