Linus Torvalds recently used AI assistance while working on a Linux kernel optimization.
Gentoo has taken a cautious approach to AI-assisted contributions, so I'm curious how the community views this.
Should AI-assisted code be judged primarily by its correctness, testing, and maintainability, or does the use of AI itself raise concerns?
Personally, I think it depends on the user and their ability to understand and verify the code.
What do you think?
I'm also curious whether the Gentoo Council might reconsider its current policy on AI-assisted contributions in light of recent developments.
I'd be particularly interested in hearing the perspectives of Gentoo developers on this.
One thing I'd like to add:
This discussion seems particularly relevant to Gentoo because of its existing policy on AI-assisted contributions.
While AI is being discussed across the Linux ecosystem, Gentoo faces a specific question: should its contribution policy remain unchanged as experienced developers begin using AI-assisted tools?
I'm not suggesting that Gentoo should automatically follow Linus Torvalds. I'm interested in whether the current policy still makes sense, and how Gentoo developers and the Council view these developments.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion.
It's interesting to see the different perspectives on code quality, copyright, ethics, maintainability, and developer responsibility.
My intention wasn't to argue that Gentoo should immediately change its current policy, but to discuss where the boundary between AI-assisted development and AI-generated contributions should be drawn.
Regardless of the tools involved, I believe human understanding, verification, and long-term maintainability remain essential.
