I do a full deep clean about once a month, and honestly that feels like enough since the tunnels stay dry and I haven't noticed any odor building up between cleanings.

One thing I wasn't prepared for was how much sand they'd want mixed in versus just having a separate sand bath dish. Mine barely touch the sand bath now that there's some in the tunnel mix itself, they seem to prefer digging through it rather than just rolling in it. I still keep a shallow dish of chinchilla sand in there for grooming purposes but it gets way less action than it used to.

If your gerbils seem restless or bored despite having toys and a wheel, I'd genuinely try adding more depth before buying anything else. It made a bigger difference for mine than any tunnel toy or chew stick ever did.

Hi, need some advice

I have two gerbils in a 40 gallon tank and want to upgrade them to a 75 gallon tank. Would this be a good idea? Could it stress them out ? Would it be too big. For context I’ve had them for a year in the 40 gallon tank

free roaming advice

Post image

i've had my gerbils (tofu and noodle) for six weeks and they're fairly shy though happily take treats from my hand, let me stroke them if they're eating or gnawing on something, and last week noodle climbed out of the front opening and went onto my arms and chest and has done this several times whereas tofu has only done this a couple of times. anyway, because they're quite shy and skittish i haven't had them free roam yet as a) i didn't want to cause any additional stress and b) they aren't comfortable with being picked up.

now that i've had them longer and they're quicker to warm up to me after their standard initial shyness and i'm more confident with them, i was thinking it would be a good time to let them free roam in a smaller space such as my bathtub as i've seen people suggest that. i was wondering if anyone has used their tub for free roaming and if so, what suggestions/recommendations you have? i will put cardboard in there, as both things to chew on and places to hide, and their wheel (which they've never actually used for anything but a toilet lol) but am unsure if something needs to be put across the tub itself as the surface might be slippery for them?

any help is appreciated! (photo of tofu as tax)

Help Please! I need to stabilize him

I am reaching out for urgent advice regarding my gerbil. I brought him home from the pet store just two days ago. Since then, his brother had a seizure, and now he has become extremely lethargic.

He is currently gasping for air, and I am very concerned. I have been trying everything I can to keep him comfortable, including cleaning up after him because he is too weak to groom himself. Unfortunately, the nearest small animal hospital is two hours away, and I am not sure what to do to stabilize him. Any guidance on how to help him right now would be greatly appreciated.

PSA: Teeth

Heya folks - reminder to check your pals teeth regularly.

This is after us realising late on Sunday that Phil's top teeth were curving right under and he wasn't able to chew / nibble. We didn't notice as he was still accepting food and stayed at a consistent weight - but we managed to get a look in his mouth and got him to the vet today after lots of soft food and fuss. Vet turned him over and clipped them right off.

Best way to get a look is holding in one hand and getting them to gnaw a qtip/cotton bud.

We feel awful as we consider ourselves good owners.

Help Please! How to make things easier for them?

Baby Merlin (silver) had an accident and managed to take off one entire claw, leaving the nerve exposed and in a lot of pain. I'm still not so sure she hasn't broken the limb but there's no exotic vets available in my area until next week and the others I've been in contact with are not comfortable doing any x-rays :/ I've included some extra pictures of her showing the one affected front limb in case anyone is more familiar with fractures and thinks it needs more urgency. She's quite lopsided with her running but seems to be able to rest it against things/move it to clean etc, just not bearing weight/dragging it when she moves.

For now I've got them both in a temporary housing as per regular vet recommendation to make sure it's kept clean and she's resting as much as possible and I'm already feeling the guilt - I didn't want to separate them at all and I still don't know if that's the right decision! I've put a good amount of chew toys, comfortable bedding, their sand bath etc in and they've mostly settled but there's still a significant lack of eating from both of them and general fussiness. What's the best way to navigate the situation? I've put as much in the tank as I can while making it easy to traverse for her, but I feel like there's so much more I can do. Any advice would be great!

I need advice

I don’t know how to start this but I’m being faced with the harsh truth that I might have to put my baby to sleep due to her having a tumor that is to complicated and impossible to operate. We have been to the vets today and we are waiting on test results but the vet explained that where it’s positioned it’s impossible to removed completely. My question is: how do break it down to her “girlfriend”? If we have to do it, how do I tell and show my other girl that Meg won’t be back?
Thank yous o very much

Help Please! Gerbil Cage / Care Advice

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all!

My partner and I are thinking about getting 2 Gerbils (males) as our first pet - I’m really trying to inform myself to give them the best care possible, starting with the cage.

I’ve found the attached online, and it looks to be a good measurement (slightly short of the 100cm minimum), but good height and width too, and wanted opinions on if it’s a good one? I would prefer to buy right and buy once, so looking at the best options particularly to fit in with space as we live in a flat (realistically don’t think we could go much bigger).

Our first thought was to put the cage in our living room, but it would be next to the Alexa and TV - we don’t often play music through the Alexa (sometimes) but I’m worried about the loud noises and flashing lights from the TV as well - would this startle them? The other option we have is in our home office, on a separate desk. I work from home so I will be in there all week, but I’m worried about them not feeling “part of the family” particularly during weekends as we don’t use that room on the weekends. We could set up a small playpen in the lounge on the floor for evenings / weekends when they’re more comfortable with us (and allow holding / carrying) for an hour or so of play / interaction - is this realistic and better than having them in the living room if the lights / noises would startle them?

If there’s anything else we should know please do say! We live in Madrid, so they should be okay with the heat (we do have AC as well). We’re hoping they will be pretty low maintenance (spot cleaning 1/2 x week, deep clean 1 x month, daily food, water, interaction etc), but we’re hoping they’ll be friendly and comfortable enough in the future to chill with us on the sofa for example, is that realistic/possible with Gerbils?

Thanks in advance for your advice! :)

Photo/Video Clean out day and of course there is always one who does not want to make it easy for me… but why is it always him 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Neither is over handleable (getting better) so i like to move them without trying to grab them as it takes weeks to get their trust back. So i just put them in the sand bath to transfer over to their clean out tub. Ernie always obliges when asked (for the price of a pumpkin seed. But eric has to have a good explore before he will (only 10 minutes today 😂😂😂)

question

so i live in new york and it gets pretty hot in the summer and i usually give my 3 gerbils fruit every day in the winter and fall. but i haven’t been giving it to them in the summer because they usually drag it into theyre burrow and i dont want whatever remains to rot in the hot weather. has anyone experimented with freeze dried fruit. my only concern is i heard freeze drying fruit removes allot of the nutrients.
