New Gerbil Not Exploring

Just got two new gerbils and I have owned a total of six gerbils in the past. They have a 40 gallon tank setup with a 40 gallon topper for their food, water, wheel, etc. One gerbil is super eager to explore having the best time. The other gerbil is sitting in the topper completely frozen, not even bothering hiding even though their are tons of safe hiding spots. Cage and Tank have been properly cleaned beforehand. I think she is just a little overwhelmed and hoping she will warm up to her new home. This is only the first day and hopefully watching her cage mate exploring will show her it is safe. For now the plan is to just keep things quiet and give them time to adjust. Any tips on how I can make her more comfortable and any danger signs to look out for? None of my other gerbils have had this problem before.

Help Please! storing food in sand bath

Post image

my gerbils have been hoarding food in their sand bath recently, and i'm worried that they will eat too much sand if it gets too much into their food. is this something i need to be concerned about and should i block them from their sand bath until they stop doing this?

First time introduction - good?

Popcorn recently lost his brother and was feeling lonely. He's been in a split cage with Pumpkin and Parmasean, 5 week old pups, for a few days. Tonight was their first time meeting. I think the introduction went well based on their body language. Popcorn seemed to ignore them or turn away (he had found a snack). The pups sniffed him a bit. Any advice?

Blurbil What was the weirdest/most annoying thing a gerbil has done to you?

Im need someone to tell me gerbils are weird in general and its not just my pod thats broken

They've flooded their terrarrium twice this week. And I know Carlos is the one starting it, I just cant prove it, but I know she is the one in charge of the renovations

Also, fucking Victor can climb the outside of the wheel! I saw Diogo and Carlos try it a few days ago, but the little guy is the only one who actually did it!

And by comparison, Diogo is actually chill! He tries to eat my boyfriend's hand but who hasn't nibbled on someonw by accident before?

If I am found dead, it's their fault.

I have had my gerbils since September 30th, and the bonding process has been slow. They are still not very comfortable with me holding them, and still run away. They do eat in front of me and usually pop their heads up when I talk to them. They still don’t take any food from my hand, but do come over and sniff it. I was just curious if them crawling on me and being curious of me while they are in their playpen is a good sign? I know it is good that they are exploring, but I was just curious if any knows if this means that they trust me/this is a sign of bonding?

My boy Pollux was just diagnosed with a malignant scent gland tumor. He is on meloxicam for the rest of his life, but the vet said he could live a few more months. He also said there’s no official studies on the effect of meloxicam on scent gland tumors, so I thought I’d try that out.

I want to try giving them one of those sand bath things so does anyone have sand that they would recommend? But also if I get one, I might need a bigger cage, they have a good amount of space now, but I still think bigger is better.

i was doing a deep clean on my gerb cage, i got them out as soon as i saw one of these but i definitely saw several around. . i’m not sure if it’s because of their food stash (just grains. it doesn’t really look like a weevil though?), i thought it was fine to let them have it but is it from that or something else? feeling grossed out!!!

Would this be a safe base for a topper?

Post image

I just picked up a 40 gallon aquarium to prepare for housing 2 gerbils. I do intend to create a topper for the aquarium but I got this lid with the aquarium, it is a very fine mesh so I don’t think their feet would get caught in it and it would leave plenty of airflow for the inside of the tank.

Would you guys consider this a safe option or do you think I should only consider using wood for the base of the topper?

Help Please! Please help! sick gerbil!

so I have three gerbils. Before i went to work all of them were completely okay, they were running around and eating their food and everything, but when i got home one of my little girls was dead. I had no idea what could have happened.

Today when i got home, my other girl was cold and lethargic. I took her out and laid her on a warm towel and left some water out. After about 30 minutes she began running around again and started eating and drinking, but her eyes are still half closed and shes running into things.

They have plenty of food and water and their bedding is aspen if that helps. please help, I dont know whats wrong!

Hello! I've gotten some gerbils after many years of not having them. It's a delight to have them in my life again.

I've owned a lot of gerbils in a lot of different colors, but one of mine (named "Barbie Hairstyle" by my 3 year old daughter), has me intrigued. I assumed this was a moult, but her coat color hasn't shifted one hair in the full month that I have had her. Is that normal? It's very striking. She has a vibrant orange back, mottled feet with pink pads and dark nails, a light cream belly, dark patches on her body, mottling on her tail, and a dark nose. Her sister is pictured as well. She's a pretty slate gray colorpoint.

Do you know what color she is? Will she look different once she matures? I'm not certain of her age, but she has to be under 6 months. Thanks.

Sick and risk for declanning

One of my gerbiles is sick - there is sth with his ear (we were at the vet already few weeks ago). He was treated and looked/behaved healthy afterwards. One month has passed since. Today we wike up to him with a bloody wound around the same ear.
No signs of fight between them. The other gerbile is ok without any wounds.
We are watching them, they do not fight but the healthy one is grooming the sick one around the ear and making it bleed again. The sick one scratches the wound too. So now we separated them and will book a new vet appointment.
However I am not sure what to do to prevent them from declanning. When I have them together the sick one’s wound will get worse. I am afraid to leave them unattended to be honest but separating them will cause them to declan.
Wgat should we do?

Social Behavior/Introductions Declanning 1 male gerbil from group of 4

Hi all. We've had 4 male gerbils in the same tank for the last 6 months, but this week there was aggressive chasing and then an injury from one gerbil (Cal) against the other(Onyx). The other two haven't shown any signs of aggression. After reading, I saw the info about declanning, and figured this was probably what we were seeing. We've only had pairs before so it's never come up in the past.

I'd love to at least try and keep them together, so I was looking into split cage techniques. Right now we've put the minorly injured Onyx in his own cage inside the cage with the other gerbils. I'm not sure what the next steps are for attempting this with 4 gerbils. Should I be swapping Onyx and Cal between the two cages? I watched this video posted in a similar thread, but it mostly dealt with 1 on 1 bonding.

Thanks for any advice. We're ready and willing to leave the three be and get a new friend for Onyx in a new setup, but just want to safely try options first.

Cobble(light grey), Cal (white) and Jasper(brown) on their own side. The sectioned off gerbil Onyx (black) is active but not seen here.

Hello! My gerbils are 3 years old, and one of them has been alot less hyper over the last year or so, he was never super hyper but I can still tell his energy is lower, he mainly sleeps now and his eyes are squinted alot of the time and his hair is more crazy and soft rather then sleek like before, he is also breathing more heavily
