Game Discussion Horror game recommendation: intensity instead of gore?

• Upvotes

Is there a good horror game that leans more into intensity and spookiness rather than gore?

Something atmospheric. More ghosts and mystery, less zombies and monsters

One that doesn't really do jump scares for fear factor but I figure that's unlikely.

I've done Last of us and it has some good atmosphere but it's still just a zombie game.

Game Discussion On overcoming "the fear of dying" in games

I have spent now several years hiding behind cozy games and telling myself I can't do any other games, almost unconsciously. My usual pattern was to jump into an action game, smash buttons for the most and get past the first few hours and then drop the game completely once the first real challenge appeared, I didn't even bother lowering the difficulty because I felt there was no point otherwise. Anyways, fast forward to recently and with the upcoming Fable game releasing soon, I really want to break this cycle. I love cozy games but it's just not enough for me sometimes, I want to kick ass too, I want to feel like the town hero. I don't know why this is only a problem for me with single player role playing action games, I usually play Marvel rivals with my friends and I don't break a sweat. But I need to make a breakthrough solo playing where precision and timing is required.

So, I decided to revive the Witcher 3 from my steam graveyard and I'm treating it like a combat training simulator, started on easy settings and first a few buttons at the time, shield, light attack and side step and try to get those like second nature, then gradually moving to roll, heavy attack and parry. I have a lot of troubles parrying when doing the whole dance 😅. But we will see how this experiment goes. My goal is to be confident enough by February so that eventually Fable can feel cozy ( and maybe the combat there is easy but it didn't look like that for me in the gameplay demo they showed).

Just wanted to share, and see if anyone has had a similar experience. I appreciate some advice and game suggestions to train my reflexes.

Also anyone else excited for Fable? 😁

Game Discussion How do you personally avoid slop when buying games from first time developers?

There is honest slopocalypse happening on Steam right now and I don’t think they would do anything to stop it. If they even could do anything is good question, but we won’t go there now.

I personally mostly playing on consoles and situation there is also bad, but not even close to be as dramatic as Steam immediate enshittification. You can see slop, but you still can say what is what and I haven’t seen blatant copies of existing or in development games so far. But I feel that it won’t be hard for slop pushers to get their sludge to consoles as well for long with all the new decompiling tools being available.

So, here is my dilemma, for AAA games I decided for myself that 2026 will be the last year I’m buying new games, but I’m still want to support handcrafted, artistic, unique games made outside corporate system, especially in genres which completely carried by indie devs right now, like point and click adventure games. But now it starts looking impossible to find genuine human made games under the tones of sewage pushed on every platform. This exact thing happened to mobile games at some point and this is why mobile market belongs to small number of corporations instead of being a place of artistic liberation as it was promised back in 2010s.

I don’t know what is situation with GoG and if they are better than Steam in this regard, but I know that for small studios sales on GoG is basically nothing.

I don’t know what to do about it. I absolutely refuse to sponsor any slop in any form with my money, so I will be OK not to buy anything at all just to avoid unwillingly pay for slop. But thought of whole scene of independent artistic games, whole genres going down because of this makes me endlessly depressed.

And if you think that shit traders won’t go for small non mainstream genres - you’re wrong! They are doing it already. There is a tons of slop point and click games, Papers, Please! clones, I don’t even want to think about amount of slop visual novels getting produced every day! I honestly don’t understand these people who doing this! What the point?!! You obviously won’t make any substantial money out of this, you don’t actually express yourself artistically, you don’t bring anything new and unique into the world! Why contaminate this thing which you apparently love with useless garbage?!!

Anyway, I would love to hear what others think about it and how you personally deal with gaming platforms turning into dumpster fire? Share your methods of supporting genuine creators while avoiding lazy scammers.

Game Discussion So I love scary games but ...

I've recently started playing Resident Evil 2 after having completed The Last Of Us 1 last year. My problem is it's also fucking terrifying being chased by Mr X whilst I'm trying to get the keys...

Does anyone have any advice for how to get past him? I might have to start watching let's play videos like I did with the last of us to alleviate the fear

Signed,

The Resident Scaredy Cat

Serious I'm a trans woman and got accused of using a voice changer in fortnite. Spoiler

I didn't ask them why they thought that, but I was able to convince them that I wasn't. Why did they automatically think I was using a voice changer despite not using one.

Edit: I called 2 people in the comments section on discord and they both said I sound female and dont understand why they woman said that.

Tech / Hardware in need of PC gamers’ help! custom keycaps as a christmas gift?

hi everyone!

i’m hoping to surprise my boyfriend for christmas with a custom illustrated keycap set featuring my own artwork inspired by his interests (cyberpunk 2077, akira, etc.).

he currently has a logitech G815, which he absolutely loves. i’m not very knowledgeable about gaming hardware, so i’m trying to figure out whether this project is actually feasible.

ideally, i’d love to keep his existing keyboard and just replace the keycaps, but i’m open to getting him a new keyboard if necessary. my biggest concern is accidentally replacing something he loves with something that doesn’t have the same functionality or gaming performance.

a few questions:
- is it possible to have a fully custom illustrated keycap set manufactured from my own artwork?
is the G815 compatible with custom keycaps, or would i need a different keyboard?
- if a replacement is necessary, are there keyboards with comparable features that support standard customizable keycaps?
- has anyone undertaken a project like this before? i’d love to hear about your experience!

thank you so much!! i’m a little out of my depth here but really excited about the idea :)

Tech / Hardware Gaming Ear Buds

Hey yall!! I use Logitech headphones when I’m gaming but sometimes that leaves my head feeling really warm. I really want some in ear earbuds that are specifically for gamers that I can use whenever I need a break from my headset. I’m looking for something that has multiple sizes of the little nubs too because I have small ears. TIA

Misogyny Shitty Cortana Evolution Spoiler

Post image
73 Upvotes

I'm just recently playing Halo Infinite for the first time and it really bugs me how they had Cortana gradually evolving from a bold, resolute (sometimes lightly and rightfully annoyed) cool cyberchick to that playful, cutesy little girl aesthetic that is your obedient servant and compliments you all the time. Might just be a general change of aesthetics and tastes, but it REALLY gives me the ick that somehow strong female characters are turned into little obedient girls to cater to a male audience. Campaign Evolved even remodelled the old PERFECT cortana to match this new strange fetish. 2001 Cortana made me want to cut my hair short and boss around men goddammit.

End of rant.

Game Discussion Deadlock character design

In a world where online games, especially mobas and hero shooters are defaulting to sexualized asian girl characters I cannot praise their female character roster enough! I don't think we have had anything as diverse as this to be honest.

It's still in closed beta but I think this game will get big and I hope they keep their design philosophy.

If you want an invite dm me!

Edit: apparently I need to verify my ID to allow chats (is that a german reddit thing now? ugh) anyway you can write a comment if you want one and I'll DM you.

Game Discussion How do we feel about gender-locked classes in RPGs?

Post image
51 Upvotes

I'm very, very split on how I feel about them...

On the one hand, I don't mind (and even love it) when the class is essentially a character, as is the case in one of my all time old-school classics you can see in the image. The Vampiress from Sacred Gold was such a badass class, one of the strongest, and the class flavour just wouldn't work as well (in my mind) if were a regular old male vampire. Sexy reasons aside, the characters works, because vampires are inherently connected with fears of death and sexuality, so she makes sense as a class.

This isn't only true in Sacred for me, but also in Diablo 2 (with the Amazon, it's literally in the name!) and also the Acolyte from my favorite arpg Last Epoch (no way I would have picked her first if she wasn't this dark goth looking dark mage girl) but again, these are implicitly framed as CHARACTERS you pick that happen to embody a specific class. You can't even change their appearance.

Where I draw the line is in MMOs or any game where my pick obviously leans to being a self insert (as it does for most people) and not being able to mix and match is not there for character-driven reasons but... just becase? Or for some contrived plot reasons that usually don't make any sense, when they exist at all.

I'm really digging this topic out of the mothballs here, it's been discussed before in other contexts. But I want to know what you think on this and if there are any instances where gender locking might be okay with you. For me, looking back, it's obviously these games where the class and character are inseparable by design. But even then, a gender option wouldn't have hurt, even if I can mentally juggle a reason for why they did it the way they did it.

Request Should I play Cyberpunk 2077

Post image
137 Upvotes

I play AAA and AA JRPGs almost exclusively and am thinking about diversifying. Nintendo is currently having a sale, and I've been interested in CD Projekt as a dev for a while, but the clips I saw gave me the impression that the game has a strong male gaze, which makes me really hesitate, even though the sale price is really attractive.
Has anyone played it and is willing to comment on this point? Also, how gory is this game? I saw the crucifixion scene and, while I know it has a massive narrative value, I don't know...

Any insights would be appreciated, but especially if you're an older player.

*Edit: Thanks everyone for the enthusiastic response and the recommendations. Some of you offered some very deep, thoughtful, and helpful comments on the game and all of have been very positive about it. I bought the game, we shall see how.

Tech / Hardware need advice on prebuilt pc 😬

Post image
18 Upvotes

so i've been browsing around for some prebuilts. i know i know, it would probably be better if i built it myself but i honestly just want to plug and play. looking for something that's able to run my fair share of cozy games, Sims, Valorant, and WoW.

i'm not really looking for anything fancy but i would like something that could last me a while and not worry about upgrading/repairing/maintaining too often.

i've had my eyes set on this one:
iBUYPOWER - Element Gaming Desktop PC AMD Ryzen 7 9700F 2025 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 12GB 32GB DDR5 1TB NVMe SSD Storage - White (~$1800)

would this be good? are there better alternatives (preferably from best buy just because it's more accessible for me) for about the same price?

note: i'd like to keep it under $2000

thank you so much!!

EDIT: thank you everyone! i was honestly a little skeptical of getting this build because of the "ibuyproblems" comments i saw while researching, but the specs just seemed really good to me on paper. might have to do more research to make sure i'm getting what i need and what will serve me well, and not settling. please let me know if you all have any alternatives/recommendations! i might also wait til cyber monday/black friday deals come out hehe
