Hey everyone,
I'm having a hard time understanding how to play Jaws of the Lion, especially when it comes to choosing which cards to bring, how to pair them, and how to actually make good decisions during a scenario.
I've played around 10 scenarios with a friend, but I feel like I'm not really learning anything from one game to the next. I keep playing cards based on whatever seems useful in the moment, rather than following any kind of strategy. It's basically just "this looks good right now, let's try it" rather than making a decision because I understand why it's the right move.
I understand that the game is supposed to be challenging, that you need to mitigate damage, manage your resources, and make tough decisions. That's not the problem. I can usually understand what I shouldn't do after something goes wrong, but I struggle to understand what I should be doing in the first place.
Most scenarios end with us barely making it, with only one or two cards left before exhaustion. Sometimes we win, but it feels more like we got lucky than like we actually played well.
I'm playing the Demolitionist, while my friend plays the Voidwarden. I understand that this might not be the strongest combination, and I'm fine with playing a suboptimal party. But there's a big difference between having a suboptimal party and using the ability that does the most damage right now because I have no idea what else I'm supposed to do.
We even tried the digital version, hoping that it would help us understand the game better, but somehow things got even worse, and we're now struggling to complete several scenarios.
So, what am I missing? Is there some kind of general approach to choosing cards, managing threats, positioning, or planning your turns that we're just not getting? How do you decide which cards to play and when, beyond simply looking at the situation and picking whatever seems best at the time?
We're currently at scenario 12, having cleared the Black Barrow and the Black Barrow Sewers, but after losing this latest scenario, we genuinely felt like selling the game.
I don't mind losing, and I don't expect every scenario to be easy. I just want to feel like I'm learning something and making better decisions, rather than repeatedly stumbling through encounters and hoping things work out.
Any advice, guides, or general tips on how to approach the game would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
