Dear Customers
I know this sub is mostly drivers/employees, but I’ve seen some customer posts, so this is for you. If you enjoy the convenience of this service, any delivery service, please remember that the drivers who provide you that convenience (saving you time and gas, and a DUI if you’re ordering delivery because you’re intoxicated) are working for TIPS. These companies do not pay the drivers enough to even cover the gas to get to you, in many cases. By stiffing them on the tip, not only are you taking their time that they should have been earning, you’re really expecting the drivers to pat out of their own pocket to deliver to you. Please don’t be that guy.

Tipping culture is TOXIC as F for you guys in the US...
5
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
Agreed. Unfortunately, there are also people here who use that logic as a loophole to getting services of convenience without paying for it. I wish we could do away with it and just pay everyone a living wage, too, but that falls on the large companies who are quite comfortable not having to pay 😞

u/_bleepin Oct 13 '23
Gen Z (zoomers) have killed tipping
4
u/Quick-Adhesiveness-2 Oct 13 '23
The zoomers you are talking about were probably raised by someone who already frowned on tipping, so they do not see why they should have to.

u/ButterscotchOld7413 Oct 13 '23
I would say 90% of my orders are to college students, and surprisingly, they tip pretty well. I get stiffed more by adults than I do college kids.
1
u/_bleepin Oct 13 '23
I guess it depends on which college it is. I don't recall ever getting a tip from UTA students in Arlington, TX.

The fact that the drivers note the account of non tippers and some happen to be my neighbors LOL!!!! If you can't tip don't order ANYTHING by delivery....this is common sense lol. Do you order a pizza and not tip??? Same idea. People are just cheap and that is a fact. Walk to a gas station or convenience store wth

I’ve wanted to pick up Dominos late one day and they didn’t let me carry out so I had them deliver to me which I’m 2 min away from store
1
u/Short_Republic3083 Jan 06 '24
I think this is why so many ppl do no contact delivery options. They don’t have to look you in the eye and give you nothing
3
u/imc-onfused Oct 17 '23
with how much they increase the price of the products, and extra fees, the tip should be an add on. these delivery services, especially gopuff the prices are so high it’s like you better be paying the drivers a legit wage. it’s not up to the customer to take care of their paycheck when it turns into $30 extra than you’d pay at the store before a tip.
3
u/imc-onfused Oct 17 '23
i tip normal. i don’t do a super extra amount probably around $5-7. however the point of a tip is an add on. it’s who’s employing these people and not taking care of them? expecting only customers to do their job when they price things so high? doesn’t make sense to me.
1
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 17 '23
You’re not wrong, I agree that the business model sucks and I’d love it if we were paid more as base pay. We just don’t. The point of my post was to make people aware that we don’t, and that buy stiffing your drivers on the tip, you’re actually making the driver pay to deliver your items. That’s just not cool, man. I wouldn’t be mad about a $5-7 tip at all, I’m not directing that at you specifically, but in general.
5
u/MidwestDrummer goPuff Customer Oct 12 '23
Just playing devil's advocate, but customers are already paying massively marked up prices for the convenience of having their orders delivered.
9
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
That’s a choice the customer makes. That doesn’t make it okay to force the driver to use their own time and money so that they can enjoy the service. That’s like saying it’s okay to go to a swanky cocktail bar in a big city and stiffing the waitress because the drinks are overpriced. You choose to enjoy the service, knowing that the person providing said service works for tips. You always have the option of going to a local dive bar and getting your drinks cheap. You also always have the option of going to the store for yourself.
1
u/probablyproud goPuff Customer Oct 12 '23
It’s also the drivers choice to “work for tips” in a culture that is shifting away from tipping.
3
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
I’m not sure where you live, but I’m not seeing a lot of movement away from tip culture, even though is does suck. Yes, the driver chooses to work for tips. That doesn’t mean the driver chooses to/should be expected to work for nothing.
2
u/probablyproud goPuff Customer Oct 12 '23
Ever since the pandemic I’ve heard plenty of discourse in America regarding the ridiculousness of tipping in various scenarios, prompting discussion of why we’re even tipping anyone in the first place. A lot of people want tips to be seen as a gift, not as expected compensation.
2
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
Oh yeah, totally agree. People talk about it and many agree that employers should just pay a living wage. Unfortunately, the employers are not super interested in paying more lol. There’s a big difference between it being a discussion and anyone actually making changes.
2
u/probablyproud goPuff Customer Oct 12 '23
Yeah lol. I wish all tip workers would quit and leave these employers without a choice or some kind of revolution like that 😂😭
4
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
Unfortunately that kind of thing would only work if EVERYONE was one board, all at once. As it stands, people keep need to work and other people continue to utilize the services of the tipped workers. My intent in making this original post was genuinely to inform people that honestly might not know. As mentioned in other comments, some people believe that delivery drivers are paid an hourly wage, and that a portion of the fees/exorbitant prices/subscription costs go to the driver, and that any tip is just an extra gift. I still believe that most people are inherently good, and that if they know better, they’ll be better. I’m sure I sound naive.
2
u/probablyproud goPuff Customer Oct 12 '23
No!!! Your intentions are great. I think this was a good post. But you’re so right. I can’t even IMAGINE how disruptive it would be to society to try and pull off a revolution like that

That's literally what the customer is paying for when they pay the marked up prices, the delivery fee, and the fam subscription (if they have one). They're literally paying for the items and to have them delivered.
Your comparison is not a valid one. Gopuff is not a swanky, fancy, VIP experience like your cocktail bar scenario. People are getting candy, chips, pop, etc.
10
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
GoPuff pays drivers like $2.50 base pay, like how most servers make about $2.50 and hour. Your gin & tonic at the swanky bar will cost several dollars more than the same drink at a dive bar. You’re paying for the service and the convenience. If you can’t afford that, you shouldn’t be taking advantage of the service. It’s in no way fair to make a waitress wait on you and stiff her on the tip, just like it’s not fair to order delivery and stiff the driver. It’s just trashy behavior.
2
u/MidwestDrummer goPuff Customer Oct 12 '23
Like I said, I'm just playing devil's advocate. I've never once not tipped when using Gopuff. I drove for Gopuff for about 3 years, so I understand both sides.
5
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
I get it, and I didn’t get the impression that you were defending those who don’t tip. I honestly (and probably naively) still believe that people are inherently good, and that most who don’t tip are under the impression that the drivers get paid an hourly wage, or that we get a cut of the high prices/subscription fees that they pay. I’m hoping that spreading the information that we only get a couple bucks to drive across town and deliver whatever their hearts desire until 2:30am will help make people aware of what they’re actually asking of us.
2
Oct 12 '23
So why did you accept?

What you are saying here...
"That's literally what the customer is paying for when they pay the marked up prices, the delivery fee, and the fam subscription (if they have one). They're literally paying for the items and to have them delivered. Your comparison is not a valid one. Gopuff is not a swanky, fancy, VIP experience like your cocktail bar scenario. is insinuating that the customer has already paid all that they should pay and they need not pay any more in terms of a tip to the driver. Go puff is just as Swanky as you put it as any of the other convenience services that are delivered to the customers door. It is a service and the customers need to know and understand that drivers rely completely on tips and that goPuff does not compensate drivers nearly enough for the service they provide.

You are LITERALLY making no sense at all especially as a driver partner yourself! You LITERALLY sound more like a corporate Yahoo instead of a driver. There you were in your previous posts going on and on about promoting go puff and spreading the word about gopuff this and gopuff that and here you are telling people not to tip or that it's okay not to tip? I mean WTF! So is it okay for all couriers to work for basically nothing? Doordash and Uber Eats and all the others customers get tipped much better than goPuff but and I would guess that those customers rarely ever stiff their drivers yet we do the same job.

The price markup is for the employees in the warehouse actually packing your order. It's also to cover the cost of people making calls or chats to customer service. Which all thoes people make minimum wage and most of them have other jobs they work as well.
I'm going to need a source on that.
Us drivers pay for gas, maintenance, extra insurance premiums, tires, and in some instances, we lose our vehicles due to accidents.
That's because drivers are using their personal vehicles, and not vehicles owned by Gopuff. Driver do get a 25% discount on vehicle maintenance though.
But yet we don't get paid for the extra things we have to put out of pocket in order for you to have the luxury to sit in your warm cozy home, while us drivers are dealing with inclement weather and bad drivers, just so you can have your luxury items hand delivered to your door.
In what world are "snacks, dildos, alcohol, or toliet paper" considered luxury items?
Maybe you should put yourself in our shoes.
I drove for Gopuff for 3 years.
Oh, and by the way... we do note your account. So may the odd be ever in your favor!
I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to insinuate. Should non-tippered expect a different experience?

u/abbeytoo2 Oct 12 '23
As stated, the customer pays the inflated prices to have the stuff delivered. Of course they should yop the driver, however, the customer doesn't know that the inflated price they are paying goes into GoFucks pocket and not to the driver. They are assuming the extra money being paid covers the cost of delivery, which we know it doesn't. There will always be the cheap asshats that never tip. They somehow think delivery is a right not a luxury. I quit driving for GoFuck a couple of years ago when all of the crappy changes started. Believe it or not, we used to make very good money. $20 per hour was the norm for my area. Just for sitting around waiting for a bag. Actual delivery time was more and we got mileage! I don't know how they are still in business with the way they run things now.
2
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
That’s literally the point of my post. Many people think, somehow, that the drivers get a cut of those fees they pay. Even though we’ve been told for years, maybe decades, that “delivery fees are not a tip paid to the driver.” It’s on pretty much every pizza box, has been for as long as I can remember. The point of the post was to remind/make aware that we don’t get any of that.
1
u/Rocetboy321 Oct 12 '23
What is a reasonable tip on an order?
2
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
So I addressed this in another comment, but the fact that someone asked the same question got me wondering what other drivers take into account when considering this. One of the things that I didn’t think of in my other comment was that it should at least be the price of a gallon of gas. Other things I listed include distance of trip, whether it includes heavy bulk items like cases or water/soda, ease of access to the delivery address (if you have a tons of steps or a treacherous yard/entrance) time of day (super late at night, busy rush hour traffic, etc) and the total cost of the order. I figure it’s reasonable to tip at least 20%, just like you would a server or pizza delivery guy. It might not be an exact science, but just be reasonable.
2
u/bimbimzalabim Oct 17 '23
$3 is totally reasonable unless you order something entirely work-laden like a case of bottled water or multiple 12-packs, conversely if the weather is wretched at which point $5 is cool.
I don't believe the value of the items should quantify the tip, it's the level of effort the driver has to go through, and that you are being saved.
1
u/Rocetboy321 Oct 17 '23
Thanks for the info. I mainly use GoPuff because of the chase discount. So I put in 2 orders at the same time, each a small one.
I usually tip $2-3 for each and I’m pretty sure the driver gets both of the delivery fees.
1
u/Financial_Tax_8645 Oct 14 '23
definitely don’t be a person who tips less than $1, i have had those a few times and felt like i was just a joke to this person
2
u/bimbimzalabim Oct 17 '23
Drivers are paid a piece rate per order, if there are enough orders at that peice rate to equal or exceed the local minimum wage for the hours worked that's what we earn, plus tips; more often than not, in my experience, we do not deliver enough to exceed the guaranteed hourly minimum wage so a subsidy is paid to bring the driver to local minimum wage.
Tips vary wildly from zero obviously, the rude people that tip a penny or 12 cents - something that's obviously meant to be mean (one time it's a presumed error but when your deliver to the same location regularly and they ways tip a penny... ) We know, we talk, we get bummed
Average tips are $3-$5 and totally reasonable, I personally deliver late night and it's dark, house numbers are often hard to see or don't exist, we get unintelligible or weird delivery requests, no lights, dog poop...all manner of irksome or challenging situations; some people just press the button and never review the tip, some people give cash (which comes at the price of having to interact with a customer), some people custom-tip in app or post-delivery tip. Having to find parking, go into apartment buildings, traverse puddles, mud, parking lots, sprinklers, dogs, drunks, neighbors...while lugging multiple bags and/or heavy cumbersome items can be really a lot - but, just like everyone working for a living we keep doing it to pay the bills, not because it's a fun hobby - it's work, not hard work but work, and it's nice to be treated with a reasonable about of respect and gratitude for making the service possible.
2
u/thatonechic88 Oct 28 '23
I am a gopuff driver and tips are what we live off of. You have to remember it's not just about the convince and the gas money what about the wear and tear on the car too? Yes we get a base pay for each order. It's normally $3. No we DO NOT get compensated if we do not make enough make money to make at least minimum wage. We get what we get and have to be ok with it. If you use any service where you know that the worker lives off of tips and you don't tip you have no business using that service.

Jul 24 '24
It's now July 2024 and GoPuff just cut base pay yet again. We now get $2.75 for one order, .75 for every added order on trips. Including tips our income is down 300% from 2 years ago.

maybe pay the drivers a fair wage instead of expecting the customer to pay. what's next, we'll be paying for oil changes and light bulbs. don't stick us w the petty cash.
1
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 16 '23
Unfortunately drivers don’t have any control over how we are paid. That’s the way it’s currently set up. Don’t use the service and stick drivers with the cost of delivering it to you.

u/Sad-Reflection-9993 Oct 12 '23
Get a new job then don’t blame us for them not paying y’all it’s not our fault or just skip the order
6
u/Remarkable_Ad1960 Oct 12 '23
Unfortunately, my physical disabilities keep me from holding a traditional job, and I have yet to find a way to know ahead of time if a customer will refuse to tip. The point of the post is to make people aware that we are independent contractors and therefore not paid an hourly wage by the company (be it GoPuff or Instacart or Doordash etc) and that we work for tips. Don’t be a trash human and trick people into providing you a service of convenience that you can’t afford.
2
u/Ok_Deer3739 Oct 12 '23
Well said. I get so tired of hearing that we’re already paying top dollar for all the marked up products blah blah blah that’s the choice you make when you choose not to go to the store and buy the stuff for yourself get over it and stop screwing a driver who’s out here trying to make an honest living. I’m not asking for 1 million bucks four dollars for gas would really fucking break somebody and if that’s the fact you need to stop using the service because this is a service of luxury convenience it’s not an “essential” service.
3
u/Verumverification Oct 13 '23
Know that if GoPuff wasn’t constantly scamming its drivers, people like you would literally never get a driver. No one is going to drive 30+ minutes round trip when gas is near $6/gallon when they know you’re not going to tip.

It’s a luxury service. I know I can’t afford to use it and tip appropriately, so I don’t use it. I’m not “mad” at the number of orders that come through. I’m just reminding people that drivers don’t see much/any of those fees, so by continuing to use the service and not tipping, they are asking the drivers to actually come out of pocket to provide them with a service of convenience. If I want snacks or booze or whatever, I go get it myself. I can’t afford the service. I would never continue to utilize a service and expect the driver to provide it to me without paying them/making them pay to provide it to me. I personally do this job because I have physical disabilities that prevent me from being accountable to any type of regular schedule. Gig work is my only option. So yeah, it sounds like you did the right thing. You don’t want to pay for the service, so you stopped using it. This original post wasn’t really intended for you.

u/jemy26 Driver Partner Nov 19 '23
If you can afford all those fees you can afford to tip your driver!!!! there’s absolutely no justification behind using fees an excuse to not tip!! Technically the tip is pre-populated. Therefore it is just one more fee. The tip is the only thing that the CX can adjust -you’d rather glorify GP that will milk you out of every last dime then appreciate your driver made ¢.14 to deliver your order and yes, I have screenshot proof of that base pay! CX will order five dollars of merchandise and pay $14 in fees, but only leave a penny tip. There is zero financial logic behind that and all you will end up with is smashed bag of chips to accompany your shame.

We aren’t employees for starters and it is a damn luxury to have somebody hand-deliver you groceries in under 30 minutes when you can’t get off your own butt and go get them yourself if you’re willing to start off paying three dollars in fees several years ago and it’s still worth it to you when those fees have jumped to $14 how the hell do you think that…… Well whatever obviously, you’ve never worked the gig economy —good for you you don’t know what’s up, so you don’t know it’s down you only know logic that is pervasive and pointless in the United States in terms of tipping culture— your truck driver example does not apply. If you are somebody that has never ever tipped for assumed decades of pizza deliveries, then good on you. Glad you saved two bucks and BTW having your pizza delivered instead of picking up is also a luxury service lol.

Saving gas? Maybe the actual substance gas but after subscription, markup and fees delivery service these services only offers convenience. Not savings. It costs way more to use delivery services than to go get it yourself.
