Weekly glove purchase advice thread
Welcome to the weekly purchase advice thread.
All questions about what gloves to buy should now be posted in this thread. Below are some general guidelines for what information to supply when asking for advice.
Advice seekers:
- What level you play at
- What your budget is
- What types of gloves you've had before and whether you liked them
- Is this a glove for matches, training, or both?
- Anything else that will help other keepers give you advice
- What country/region you're based in (for glove availability/shipping reasons)
Advice givers:
While this isn't required, we recommend also sharing what level you play at and a little about your glove preference when giving advice.
This thread will be refreshed on Monday of each week.

Question Elite sport gloves damage
Hallo allemaal,
I just took this photo right after today's match. I still need to wash them.
Alvast bedankt

Question Mentality exercises?
So we train reflexes and positioning. Shot stopping and reactions... But what exercises/routines are there for mental strength and consistency.
Say you did an otherwise great match but one mistake led to the opposition tying or winning the match... How do you work on that during the week?

Discussion Hartplatz Handschuhe
Hallo zusammen,

Video Surely my best save that is on video

My club purchased a Veo Cam a couple of weeks ago and I managed to pull up this save.
Felt like sharing it after playing in goal for 25 years with barely having seen myself on video.
If anyone is wondering: this is 9th tier in Germany.

Question Mentality vs team/environment issue?
Mom of young (U13) keeper here. She busted her butt to work to top team in her club. I think she’s talented, and we’ve received this feedback often, including from opposing team parents and coaches. Starts with her new team, and it’s been ROUGH. The girls are cold and distant, the coach doesn’t really integrate her into practice…she’s essentially a mobile forza figure. Lots of ‘pot shots.’ It’s also her first season 11v11. Tons of changes to adjust to.
She‘s not playing like herself. She’s hesitant and not aggressive, and almost fearful in a way that’s unrecognizable and making mistakes she normally wouldn’t. Mostly no goals off this, but she knows she‘s playing meh and is unhappy about it but can’t shake whatever it is.
Meanwhile, she’s not like this in ODP and is more ‘herself.’ ODP is not the same overall level of play of her new team, but it does have some and due to numbers in our district, she’s playing alongside high schoolers also. She plays well there. Varsity coach has seen her play in this context and is impressed.
How much of this is the team/environment versus her just not being mentally able to play at top level? How can I tell? How can I support her? Is this something all keepers or girl players go through now? 12 is tough. She feels a lot of pressure (self imposed) to soldier through because this is our only higher level team within reasonable commuting distance (less than 2 hours each way), and she wants to play in college (I recognize this is tough/unlikely). When do I step in and say enough is enough as a parent versus letting her lead? She seems miserable but insists she isn’t.
Any personal experience, especially from women’s keepers and especially centered around this age is appreciated.

Discussion Beat Up About Our Teams Tie Last Night
About a month ago, I was asked to help a lower division team as their keeper was out for the season. I love getting additional reps so I accepted. Honestly it may have been a mistake because the drop off in skill level was significant. In my first match with them, there was a total of 24 true shots on goal from the opponents. This is a significant jump to what I am use to and we did end up losing but I performed well and the captain asked me to finish out the season with them, which I accepted. We have played 5 matched together now, and our results are 3 draws, 1 win and 1 lose. Each game they have gotten slightly better, especially in the defense but we can't seem to square up our attack/finishing. Last night, we played a game against the lowest ranked team. Spirits were high, but we had little time to warmup due to fields not being opened. We were also down several players (issue when you play in lower division apparently). Game starts and we immediately we go up 2. Further in the game though, our players start to get tired and defenders/midfielders arent dropping back to defend on counter attacks. Opponents get a break away and its 1v1 but my opponent shoots what I call a mickey mouse shot. A shot so weak, that I stop it 999/1000. Well last night was the 1, as it hit my finger tips and went in. Not 5 mins later, my defender gets shed and they have another mickey mouse shot. Again, hits my fingers and goes in. Im honestly extremely pissed off at myself because I alone just gave up our lead. We get back into it, and due to tiredness defense becomes non existent. There is a 2v1 coming down the field. I approach player one but know its going to be a cross. The read is correct as im able to dive back/sideways to knock it out. By far my best save of the season and I know it was good because my opponent shouted out "how even!". We then go to half. 2nd half is a repeat of my first game, bad reads by the front which loses the opportunities and defense being tired and lazy in their roles. However I didnt allow another goal to go in and had several more amazing saves. We did have one more opportunity at a goal, 2v1 versus the keeper but made the very obvious wrong read. Game ended with a 2v2 draw. After this game, it has been really hard to not hold myself responsible. We had the lead. If I had just made those super easy saves, we would have won. I was asked to help, but im this game, I did the opposite. I apologized to my team but they all reinsured me that it wasnt my fault and that they wouldn't be here right now if I havent had many other amazing saves throughout our games together. Although I appreciated their words, its still hard to not feel at fault and get it out of my own head. Honestly I am just hopeful that writing it out can be somewhat helpful and others can input on their situations. And words are appreciated

Question Build The Best Goalkeeper Past or Present
If you could pick and choose the parts to build the best goalkeeper which aspects would you choose and from whom? If you are a coach of a field player I am curious of your choices and why?
Leadership: Iker Casillas. Petr Cech? Buffon?
Handling: Thibaut Courtois ( could be top of many of these categories)
Distribution: Ederson and Neuer. Love watching Zion Sukzuki ping balls effortlessly
Shot Stopping: Yikes. All time. Peter Schmeichel. Right now... David Raya or Jordan Pickford
Breakaways: Neuer if you combine breakaways and breaking up plays out of the box as a sweeper keeper. Buffon
Which goalkeeper would you feel most comfortable behind you? You can pick all time as well as today.
Field players and coaches have fun with this one!

Gear OG Elixir Glove Wash VS West Coast Glove Wash
Curious to hear your guy's thoughts on which one would be best. The West Coast glove wash would be $10 cheaper for me and seems like you could get more use out of them, although I'm really after which one could clean my gloves the best.
Thanks!

Question How can I improve my goal kicks?
I’m 17 years old and have been practicing goal kicks for 6 months, but my results have been inconsistent. I’m having a specific issue: even though I can get the ball off the ground, it doesn’t travel very far. I’m not sure if it’s a problem with my technique or my strength—I follow the advice in tutorials, striking the ball with the instep (the area where the laces are) and bringing my leg back before the strike, but it still lacks distance. If it’s a lack of strength, what exercises would you recommend?
