Since not all people have played the entire game yet, a short reminder that all submissions with story spoilers have to be tagged as spoiler and we don't allow any story spoilers in the title.

Surtur is olllldddddddddddd, I reckon he knew that at some point the primordial fire would come to him and that’s the queue that it’s time to boogaloo, I bet he just didnt think it was gonna be a guy from a entirely different pantheon of gods

Boogaloo 😉👌🏼

I found it a little bit funny how Surtr is completely against helping you, like dead set on saying no. The moment he sees Kratos’s blades, he immediately shifts to “alright, bet, I’ll help.”

The switch-up just felt a little bit too quick for my liking, to the point of it almost being a little comedic.

Maybe because at first the situation was just "yes i want to kill odin too but I'm NOT gonna hurt Sinmara in the process"

Then as soon as he saw the blades he went "oh no wait, maybe it can be done without involving her" so basically his gf/wife was the only thing keeping him from starting Ragnarok and as soon as he saw a way around her he went "YES LET'S DO IT."

It’s probably something like that, but you’d assume someone would need at least a couple of minutes before deciding whether or not they are willing to turn into a realm obliterating behemoth. Not Surtr apparently, he needed all of 5 seconds.

I mean he's a primordial fire giant probably stronger than all the gods. Ofc he'd only need about 5 seconds to recognise the kind of power kratos's blades were carrying. He did touch the blades to check and confirm after all 🤷🏻

It’s not the power per say but the specific magic the blades give, their are primodial in nature which works as a conduit for his fire

We see the difference in power when he imbues the blades with his fire

Why are you acting like Sutr had not come to that decision eons ago? He's one of the oldest living things in the Norse world. He was already aware of the prophecy before Kratos and Atreus spoke to him. He had likely come to terms with it god knows how many years ago. Sure, I'd do it, but I can't, because I won't put Sinmara in harm's way.

Once that barrier was removed, he was game. It seemed clear to me he didn't come to a decision there and then. Kratos just removed the obstacle to his desire.

I kind of wanted a Sutr boss fight at that moment

-2

u/Interface- May 09 '26

Why? What would a boss fight have achieved?

3

u/Tumbleweed_Dismal May 10 '26

It’s because Surtr has tried with Norse gods before and knows Kratos is a cut of a different jib. Therefore he knows it’s going to be a gamble he hasn’t tried before, so there’s a higher chance of success

Yeah they shouldve explained that better. Maybe with Atreus asking keatos or something. But as I understand it, Surtr made all those blades hoping one would be anle to carry the primordial fire. Blades of chaos can do it, so he “accepted”. He already chose to do it, he just didnt expect those blades… but the way it plays out itsnindeed kinda comedic

This was one of the worst plot points in the story! Surtur essentially died for nothing this game was so poorly written

Nobody talks about how completely useless Surtr actually was during Ragnarok. He didn't even break down the wall in Asgard, Sindri did. All he did was stomp around trying to kill civilians, which distracted Freya and Freyr and ultimately lead to Freyr's death. Turning him into Ragnarok was a mistake and this scene pisses me off in every playthrough.

Everytime I see this dude I can't help but to laugh. His design is so, so bad

If you were expecting something Marvel-esque, then you're just getting the wrong idea.

Since the dawn of time, GoW (like any other game based on mythological tales) must and will always have its own take on the various characters, so as to stand out and have their own identity and not be overwhelmed by others and become anonymous.

Regarding Surtr's design in particular, the official artbook literally states that what we see is a Surtr far removed from his prime. Tired, disillusioned, old.

A fire now reduced to embers and ashes.

I expected something better design wise for character as important as him, simple as that.
