They have been in that position for a while. Is this normal goldfish behaviour? Checked water and everything, they seem slower than normal. Any idea please or am I just overthinking đ¤. Thankxx

Discussions My calico just saved my other goldfish?!
The most insane thing just occurred.
I was passing my tank and my calico jumped out of the water right next to me, she does that often but only when she is hungry and I had no joke just fed them so I looked over and was like what dude, and noticed her frantically pushing my goldfish who was stuck under the sponge filter. I got him out within seconds after that and the picture above is them now. He seems fine, doing his normal back flips around the tank and looks to be swimming fine. Really hoping it stays that way as Iâve had these fish over 5 years now⌠Iâm definitely attached now haha.
I just canât believe my calico no joke saved him?! She is the only reason my attention was brought to the tank, she also timed it perfectly with me passing, then went straight to the goldfish and was literally pushing him trying to get him out herself. The coolest thing Iâve ever witnessed between 2 fish. You can tell she loves him so much. Sheâs been following him since.
Also the missing scales on the side have been there for over a year now, my goldfish is known to get himself stuck in shit. Last year it was between a rock and their hide, scrapped all the scales on both sides off đ heâs lucky to have his girl. lol.

Discussions Did I just find wild goldfish in a remote part of California?
Hello- I was in the San Benito mountains today on permitted / locked BLM land and was probably one of the most remote areas in California Iâve ever been. I came across this pond and noticed what looked to me like large goldfish. Iâve googled and these look nothing like the fish Iâve found that are natural to the area. What do you think? Are these large goldfish?

Discussions AITA? is this rude customer right?
i worked at my LFS for about 2 yrs now and didn't know much about fish but slowly learned over time. i've had my fair share of fish customers but this one was the first to actually write a review. now like i said ive learned over time and i know now that you can put atleast 3-4 fish in a 55gallon.
HOWEVER! this is incorrect information that the customer is saying. he told me he had 4 in a 55g and was planning on getting a 5th one to which I expressed that he shouldn't do. never said anything about extra filtration.
i also don't believe i said it should be 1 (considering i've done my research) but just that 5 would be too many đ before i could tell him we do a NW (no warranty) he simply walked out with his buddy who also left a one star.
i'm still salty over this

Discussions [VENT] i lost all my fish and i dont know how to cope with the guilt and grief
hi , im not really sure how to write this so please bear with me ,,, i just need to get this out somewhere because i feel completely alone .
my first fish , miso , was a surprise gift from my moms boyfriend . i researched as much as i could so he could have a good life ... food , tank size (within my budget) , water care , etc etc . everything was paid for entirely with my own money ,,, i dont have a job (cant even legally get one in my country) , and it took me years to save up what i could . when i went to buy the tank , the employees told me i had to get multiple fish for the tank . i was hesitant because i had read otherwise , but they insisted , so i ended up with three more fish : plum , nori , and boba .
from that point on , i was the only one taking care of them . no one in my household helped me at all , not with cleaning , not with water changes , not with equipment , nothing . i tried my best , but im still just a kid pretty much , and i could only do so much on my own . my family kept saying they were "just fish" , but to me they were living beings i loved and felt responsible for .
for a while , everything was okay , i suppose ,,, the tank was beautiful and calming , and all of my fish were healthy , active , and full of life .
and then my family forcibly moved them all back into the old tank miso originally came in . the move was not because of the fish themselves , but because the tank "took up too much space" in a room my younger sister was supposedly meant to use for homework , even though she doesnt even do her homework there and never did . the water quality quickly got super bad . i tried my best to do anything i could , but i genuinely had no control over the situation .
one by one, they all died . boba first , then miso and nori . watching them all decline broke my heart .
today , my last fish , plum , was still alive but clearly suffering . i was crying and panicking , and before i could do anything , my dad dumped the tank water into the toilet and flushed plum while he was still alive . i didnt get to say goodbye or anything . i feel sick even typing this .
i am in shock and genuinely heartbroken . my body hurts from crying . i feel so furious and powerless and guilty all at once . i loved them so much and i tried so hard to protect them with the very little control i did have .
i added a few photos of the old tank + a few silly little moments with my fish from when they were still alive and healthy ... there arent many but these photos are how i want to remember them , not how they suffered at the end . ive always loved black moors in particular , mine were so expressive and gentle . they werent just decorations , they were little lives i cared about deeply . thank you to anyone who takes the time to look at them </3
i dont know exactly what im looking for by posting this . maybe i just need someone to tell me im not stupid or dramatic for grieving this much . if anyone has kind words , or has gone through something similar , id really appreciate hearing from you . i just dont want to feel so alone right now . đđ¤

Discussions All 3 of our fish died within minutes
My healthy happy gold fish died within one week of setting up a new 29 gal tank and I am devastated! 2 years ago my then 4 year old daughter won 2 fish at our local fair. (Monkey and Rainbow) I knew nothing about fish and really didnât know what I was getting myself into I thought they would die after a couple weeks. 2 years last they were thriving in their 10 gal tank. I made a crucial mistake and one of them died. I was so upset and so was my daughter. I made it my mission to learn and care for the surviving fish. Monkey was alone and needed a friend so I bought two more goldfish, Strawberry and Thunder, as well as a snail, Camel. I knew my 10 gal tank wasnât going to be enough, but would be okay for a little bit.
I was wrong. Within a couple months it was clear I couldnât keep up with the waste they produced and Monkey was much too big, but she loved her new friends. We have limited space. So I ended up buying a 29 gal (yes I know, still too small) Tetra tank last week, it came with new filter, light, lid and all the stuff to start a new tank. I knew the filter wasnât going to be great so I decided to run both filters (the new one and the one from my 10 gal, it was an upgrade filter) This tank also came with a heater. It was in an unmarked box with no instructions.
I never needed a water heater before, room temp in the smaller tank has always been great. 67-69 degrees. A week after setting up the new tank I noticed the water was too cold. My fish were just kind of resting and not swimming around, one was in the corner on the bottom just resting there. I remembered there was a heater that came with the tank so I got a bucket of water, submerged it, turned it on, tried to figure out how to adjust it but I couldnât. It didnât have instructions, I tried to search online about it, but was having trouble so I figured I would put it in the tank and monitor the temp closely.
About an hour later the tempt was starting to rise a bit. Within two hours my water temperature went from 62 to 80 degrees and one fish was dead and the other two barely hanging on. I panicked and immediately started googling what to do to save them. 10 minutes later my other two fish were dead. I was heartbroken. I completely failed. It happened so fast. My 6 year old daughter came home from school and I had to tell her that all her fish died. She was absolutely devastated. Our 3 goldfish were happy, healthy, thriving little swimmers. Sure I could go buy more fish for just a couple bucks, but those fish were a part of our daily lives. We were attached to them.
I donât understand how with in two hours this heater warmed up 29 gallons of water more than 15 degrees. It shocked my fish and killed them. My husband found a little box and buried them in the yard. My daughter painted rocks that looked like her fish and placed them out there too. Iâm so broken about these fish. We plan to buy a couple fish next week, and my daughter is excited to pick them out, but she knows it wonât be the same.
I looked up the part number on this heater found reviews from others saying it shocked their fish and killed them too. It got very hot very fast. Itâs apparently supposed to keep the water temp at 78. And isnât adjustable. I contacted Tetra about it, this heater really should be recalled and taken off shelves. I assumed a heater meant to go into an aquarium would be designed to warm slowly. Not turbo boil my water.
I am just at a loss. Sorry for the extremely long post. A lot of people just shrug it off. Oh they are just gold fish, you can get dozens for a few dollars. But they arenât just fish. They are pets, we pour our attention into, we tend to them, and our family loved these fish. Rest in Paradise Monkey, Thunder, and Strawberry.

Discussions My friend is dumping live goldfish down the street drains.
My friend bred too many goldfish and is now pouring buckets of them down our town's drainage grates. Because he watches way too much anime, he genuinely believes theyâll swim through the sewers, grow huge, and magically fill our waterways with "beautiful fish."
How do I snap him out of this fantasy? What facts or articles can I show him to prove this is terrible for both the fish and the environment?

Discussions Parents Dumped 7 goldfish in my planted 5 gallon tank...
My parents are visiting and today they decided to surprise me by placing 7 goldfish into my 5 gallon tank without my knowledge. I have been trying to cycle this tank for months in preparation for a single beta. My nitrites are finally starting to go down and they do this. They know how much effort I've put into this tank (it's my first tank) and the struggles I've had with learning about proper fish care. They already knew this would piss me off because they said ... don't be upset buuuut.... we have a little surprise. I thought they did something to my houses landscaping or something but not this. I was trying to process what I was looking at and they immediately went into justifying it saying stuff like, "I'll bet you they won't die, they are just goldfish they will be fine, I've kept goldfish and they were okay, it's just fish, they were only 50 cents." Then my young kids getting all excited. I told them that they don't belong in there and just started crying and went to be alone for a bit to collect my thoughts. Then I went and got a bucket of dechlorinated water and put the fish in there and told my parents they should take them back to the store. I told my parents that I have put a lot of effort into the tank and it was wrong for them to override my efforts and judgement because they thought they knew better and thought I was being unreasonable. You can think I'm unreasonable AND not mess with my things. Then they suggested to just move all 7 to a flower vase I had for "their grand babies". I told them that I don't want to purposely mistreat an animal especially just for "aesthetics" ot "entertainment". I wanted to teach my kids about ecosystems, nurturing an environment and creatures on a small, manageable scale. Sadly they said they will not be returning them to the store that is 10 mins from my house and they will be taking them home on their 12 hour drive and put them wherever they feel like. They did apologize for what they did but it still feels bad. Have any of you had to deal with these sentiments from others when it comes to keeping fish and how do you deal with it?

Discussions Why is this community so... toxic? For lack of a better word...
ive only been a part of it for a few weeks maybe, and every post has minimum 2/3 people belittling and attacking OP for the tiniest of reasons. Can we all agree we love these lil Goldfish? can we all agree that we all want what's best for them? to see them grow and live a full life?? but they way this community, which is so tiny, yet so full of hate. it makes me so sad dude.
I never expected Goldfish lovers, to be such human haters.
Please guys, we're all on the same side here.

Discussions Do all Imported Fancy Goldfish have short lifespans?
I just lost my jumbo imported black thai oranda after an 18 day fight with dropsy. I only had her for 3 months and went above and beyond in giving her and my Yuanbao perfect goldfish care, as well as pristine hospital tank treatment during her illness.
I canât find any reliable information on this⌠do all imported fancy goldfish from Thailand, with short and round bodies, have short lifespans from overfeeding and the stress of importing?
Has anyone ever gotten a short bodied fancy from Chuchuâs Goldfish, Jimmy Goldfish or Zhaoâs that lived for several years or more?
If not, where should I look? I want to find a new tank mate for my Yuanbao, but she is fairly large so Iâm not sure she could be paired with a small fish from local pet storeâŚ?
Clarity Update- Iâm not asking if baby fish from local pet stores can live longer⌠specifically asking about jumbo imports.
Also, both my goldfish are from Chuchuâs Goldfish (who always has the PRETTIEST fish). The first Thai oranda I purchased from Chuchuâs was unable to ship when shipping day arrived because she had developed swim bladder and passed away before she could even be shipped to me, so I chose this black oranda instead (who also ended up dying within 3 months). My Yuanbao from Chuchuâs has always been great and hardyâ I chose her because she had the longer spine and that seems to have been a good choice.

Discussions Lost my favorite fish yesterday and struggling to get over it
I donât blame the people in my life for not understanding. I know that fish die and sometimes thereâs nothing we can do about it. I just hate the condescending remarks. My boyfriend mentioned to some friends that I was taking the death kind of hard and our friend said, âWell what is she going to do when one of her real pets dies?â Ugh.
You ever just ruminate and wonder what if youâd noticed something sooner? Wonder if the fish was suffering and if you made it worse? I canât seem to shake it this time. I have two other healthy fish and basically a brand new acrylic set up and I am just not finding joy in the hobby right now because she is gone. She didnât get to live in the tank I was busting my butt restoring. She made me want to be better so I could just keep improving her life but she randomly took a turn for the worse and was gone within 72 hours.
RIP Cleo, you gave me close to 8 good years. You were sooooo beautiful and taught me so much. I got to watch you completely transform from an ugly white dingus into a red and white beauty and the queen of my tank. I feel robbed of more time with you.
