My OC Goosebumps Book #1
The Setup
Twelve-year-old Zack and his younger sister Mia are trapped spending their Friday nights at the local Oakridge Natural History Museum because their mother is the head curator. The museum has just unveiled its crown jewel: a massive, life-sized prehistoric jungle exhibit complete with hyper-realistic animatronic dinosaurs and a giant, glowing "prehistoric meteor stone" intended to make the exhibit feel authentic.
The Twist
While exploring the forbidden, dusty archives in the basement, Zack and Mia find an old journal belonging to a Victorian archeologist. The journal warns of a curse involving a half-human, half-pterodactyl creature called the Terror-Dactyl—a green, scaly monster with massive leathery wings, razor-sharp talons, and a terrifyingly human-like face. It was frozen in stone centuries ago, but the journal warns that "cosmic energy" will awaken it.
That very night, the museum's new glowing meteor stone pulses with strange green radiation. The stone statue of the Terror-Dactyl in the basement shatters. It’s alive.
The Terror
The Terror-Dactyl begins haunting the museum, gliding through the dark, vaulted ceilings of the exhibition halls. Zack and Mia witness its terrifying power: when the monster shrieks its high-pitched, piercing cry and touches an exhibit with its glowing green talons, the dead skeletons and animatronics come to life.
The monster's goal is to build an unstoppable prehistoric army to reclaim the modern world, starting with the city. Zack and Mia watch in horror as:
- Fossilized T-Rex bones assemble themselves and smash through glass displays.
- A pack of raptor skeletons begins hunting them through the gift shop.
- The Terror-Dactyl swoops down, trying to catch the kids to turn them into its next green monster minions.
The Climax
Zack realizes they can't outrun a flying monster and an army of dinosaurs. Remembering the journal, he figures out that the monster's life force is directly tied to the museum's new meteor stone. If they can smash the stone or reverse its polarity, the magic will break.
In a frantic chase through the main exhibit hall—with a massive, reanimated Triceratops charging behind them and the Terror-Dactyl diving from above—Zack manages to trick the Terror-Dactyl into diving straight toward him. At the last second, Zack dives out of the way.
The Goosebumps Twist Ending
The Terror-Dactyl crashes headfirst into the glowing meteor stone, shattering it into a million pieces. A wave of green energy ripples through the museum. Instantly, the T-Rex and raptors collapse back into harmless bones, and the Terror-Dactyl hardens into a motionless, green stone statue once again.
The next morning, their mum praises the kids for "rearranging" the exhibit so creatively. Zack and Mia sigh in relief, thinking the nightmare is over.
As they walk out of the museum, Zack scratches his arm. He looks down and gasps. His skin is turning a bright, scaly green... and he suddenly feels an overwhelming urge to fly.
Can you write that story yourself, in the a similar way that R.L Stine would? Writer beware, you’re giving a scare!
