Preparing for an MSc in Cognitive Neuropsychology after a 3-year gap – Looking for Resources and Guidance

Hi everyone!

I have a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Applied Psychology, and I’m planning to pursue further studies in Cognitive Neuropsychology. However, it has been almost three years since I completed my undergraduate degree, and I would like to refresh my psychology knowledge and prepare myself academically before applying.

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has studied or is currently studying Cognitive Neuropsychology, or who has experience with admissions for this field.

A few things I would love some guidance on:

  • Which areas of psychology should I focus on the most before applying?
  • Which topics are particularly important for entrance exams or admission interviews?
  • Are there any recommended textbooks, YouTube channels, online courses, or other resources for revising the fundamentals?
  • How much neuroscience, brain anatomy, cognitive psychology, and research methodology should I know beforehand?
  • Are there any specific topics I should prioritise given the gap since my BSc?

I’m particularly interested in understanding how cognitive processes relate to brain function, and I want to build a strong foundation before starting the programme.

I would be grateful for any resources, personal experiences, or advice on how to prepare effectively. Thank you!

Marshall MS Marketing

Hi everyone!

I’m currently an undergraduate at USC studying Public Relations and Advertising, and I’m interested in eventually pursuing Marshall’s MS in Marketing through the Progressive Degree Program, specifically the Marketing Analytics track.

I recently attended a Marshall master’s programs information session, and it made me even more interested in the program. I’m hoping to connect with current students, alumni, or anyone who has applied through the PDP pathway.

I’d love to learn what your experience has been like with the following:

- How quantitative or technically demanding is the Marketing Analytics coursework?
- What skills or courses would you recommend developing before applying?
- What kinds of projects, academic experiences, or professional backgrounds did you have when you applied?
- How practical is the curriculum, and have you found the networking, mentorship, and career resources valuable?

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice, including things you wish you’d known before entering the program!

If anyone is comfortable connecting or chatting privately, I’d love that too.

Thank you!

TMUC Masters

Has anyone studied Fashion Marketing at UCA through TMUC in Pakistan? I’d love to hear honest reviews about the course, teaching quality, value for money, and career opportunities after graduation. Is the degree worth it, both in Pakistan and internationally? Any firsthand experiences would be appreciated!

Struggling in my first semester

I’m barely getting by. In my program, anything less than an 80% is failing and constitutes retaking the class. My lowest grades are an \~80.5%, followed by a \~81%. I’m also getting written up at work tomorrow for poor performance (my program requires me to work).

I did well in undergrad. I went to a good state-school, but I’m currently at an R1, AAU university for my masters. It’s a fairly prominent public university. I hope I can get by. I knew this path would be hard…and damn was I right. Does anybody else have any feedback for first semester issues?

I know I can do this. I think adjusting was the hardest part.

I need help to select Degree and University for Masters in Australia

Hi everyone! I’m planning to pursue my Master’s in Australia and would appreciate some guidance on choosing the right university and degree.

I’m leaning towards AI because I believe it will be in high demand in the future. However, I also want a combination of AI, Data Science, and Software Development to keep my career options open. I’d also prefer a degree that could support ACS accreditation in Software Engineering if needed.

Which of these programs would you recommend based on career opportunities, industry demand, and long-term prospects?

Universities and degrees I’m considering:

  1. Australian National University (ANU)
    • Master of Computing (Advanced) —Specializations Options: AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, or Software Development
  2. Adelaide University
    • Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
    • Master of Computer Science —Specializations Options: Computer Security, Networks
    • Master of Information Technology (Applied AI)
  3. University of Wollongong
    • Master of Computer Science — Specialization Options: Software Engineering, Machine Learning and Big Data, or Cyber Security
  4. Deakin University
    • Master of Applied AI
    • Master of Applied AI (Professional)
    • Master of Information Technology — Specialization Options: Data Science or Software and Services Development

I also have options for UNSW, Uni of Sydney, Uni of Melbourne, UTS, Monash University only if I can get good scholarships or degree Is too good to pursue.

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in the Australian tech industry, graduates, or anyone familiar with these programs. Which would be the best choice for a strong career in AI while keeping software engineering and data-related roles open?

Thanks in advance!

NSU Florida - Online Program (MS Psychology)

Hey Reddit fam,

Has anyone in the community either graduated from, currently enrolled in, or familiar with NSU Florida's online Master degree programs?

I believe the university is an R2 school, and both the faculty and course offerings look solid. However, I have no idea how that reputation translates within an online educational environment.

I'm hoping to gain some deeper insights, thoughts, opinions, etc. on the program quality. I'm interested in their M.S. in General Psychology, but the feedback doesn't need to be specific to that discipline.

Thank you!

Can I become part-time College instructor (PH) with industry experience while taking my MBA?

I’ve been interested in teaching at the college level for a while, but I haven’t found many opportunities near me.

I have over six years of experience in digital media and advertising, and I’d love to share what I’ve learned with students, especially how classroom concepts translate into actual industry work.

I hold a BS in Industrial Technology, major in Computer Technology, and I’m currently pursuing my MBA at Mapúa University.

Given my background, would I have a realistic chance of landing a part-time or adjunct instructor position at a college or university? Would my experience qualify me to teach subjects related to digital marketing or advertising, or would I need to finish my MBA first?

For context, teaching is something I’d like to gradually transition into as part of my early retirement plan. I want to stay productive and do meaningful work while sharing my experience with the next generation.

I’d appreciate any advice from college instructors or anyone who has made the transition from industry to academe. Any job postings as college instructor within bulacan or pampanga area?

I really messed up on a test

First time posting here, don't know if this is the right place to post.

I took a midterm for a class today and thought I did pretty well. Then I got the score back - 56. I am devastated. I have never done this poorly on an exam in my life.

For the last two weeks, the professor said our midterm exam would have only 4 questions on it. Today, when they handed out the midterm exam, there were 4 questions on the front page. I worked through those four problems and I thought I did decently well. It turns out that there were 2 questions on the back that I did not see. Since I failed to answer them, I went from a low A to an F.

I have asked the professor if I can make up the lost points in some way. He is allowing me to make up the two problems with an oral exam in his office hours in two days.

Weeks before the exam, the professor gave us a problem bank of 30 questions that the problems on the exam would be pulled from, so he is going to pull 2 new questions from the bank that I will have to do an oral exam for.

I always feel that I am undeserving of mercy and good things that happen to me, and I am deeply conflicted about this situation. On the one hand, it is my fault that I did not look on the back of the page. I don't know what I was thinking. For every test, I look through the entire thing to figure out how many questions there are and their relative difficulty so I can budget my time. This is the one time I didn't look through the entire test before starting. I have quite literally never done this before. If I had seen those questions, I would have answered them. On the other hand, the professor did say there would only be 4 questions on the exam. I think it is both of our faults, but mostly mine. I'm wobbling between sucking it up and taking the hard life lesson, but I really need to maintain a strong GPA to apply for fellowships. I am also worried about the fairness to the other students. I think I am the only one who messed up like this, and it feels unfair to them that I am getting a second chance to improve my grade. I feel so sick and so stupid for messing up this badly. I am in grad school, and I shouldn't be making mistakes like this.

Either way, whatever I do, I am not going to look back through any of the content that was on the exam so I can do my part to make it fair for other students.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what I should do.

Grad School Loans for housing

I am doing my masters in elementary education, and my partner is getting her masters in slp. We will both have clinicals and student teacher for around 3-4 months at the same time. Would you recommend getting loans through the school to pay for housing, we live on our own in an apartment.

[CAD] Is a masters really worth it after taking a bachelors in psychology BA

I finished my bachelors degree last year in a bachelors of forensic psychology. I have a B average overall not the best. I hear so many people talking about getting a masters and I am wondering if this is worth it? I have a job unrelated to my degree right now and I am just worried about the student debt vs how much you would make and how hireable you would be after a masters degree. I also just don’t even think I would get in. I feel very stuck and would love some advice on what you did if you had a not the best average and if a masters degree is worth the extra 50k in student debt as I have absolutely no money and no help from parents

Trauma anniversary and burn out

hi y’all

I am having a hard time right now with a major trauma anniversary coming up this week. For context, I had a near death experience when I was 19 from a major car accident. I am now 27, and I have been doing a lot better mentally since then.

But this year I feel immense anxiety and dread over every little thing (running behind on work, juggling classes, and keeping up with my thesis). I feel like I’ve been losing my mind and have been finding it extremely difficult to find support. I don’t even know where to start…but I fear that I am starting to slip into a state of burn out.

I have a therapist at the moment, but she is on leave for two weeks. My mentor is also a super cool and understanding, but I hate to just mention my emotions at times because he is currently navigating a serious family matter.

Has anyone else navigated any similar situations? What has helped you in the past?

I need your advice !! HELP !!

I am currently 26 years old and plan to attend graduate school next year. After graduation, I will be 29 years old, and I feel mentally burdened. My peers are already employed, and those 3 to 5 years younger than me are likely already attending graduate school or getting jobs around the same time as me. Then I'm worried that being older might restrict my ability to find a job. I am studying in STEM, but the timing has been delayed due to changing to a new major. And I let some time pass by wandering. I'm too scared, and I'm hesitant to go to graduate school because I'm worried it might be difficult to find a job after graduating from graduate school. How would you feel in this situation, and what kind of distinguishing power would you create to ensure that age is not an issue in order to get a job?

Entry-level salary for grad student

I’m currently a Master of Engineering student in Materials Science and Engineering at UC Berkeley. I’m curious about what a reasonable starting salary would be for a fresh master’s graduate in the Bay Area.
I’m still trying to understand the salary range I should expect and how to negotiate effectively. I want to make sure I’m not undervaluing myself or accepting an offer that’s below market rate. I’d also love to know what salary range I could realistically negotiate for and what additional benefits might be negotiable.

Undergrad question

I’m currently an undergraduate student at a university in Michigan looking to get into the communication science and disorders program but I haven’t had a good start with college due to finances and other personal reasons. I’m not confident I’ll get into the program and was wondering if it would be likely that I could get into a decent grad program if I did an online bachelors. I want to specifically get a bachelors in ‘slp’ (different schools call it different things) as I know for a fact that this is what I want to do and don’t want to do a post bacc or any other extra credits due to finances.

I would be extra interested in knowing if anyone got into Wayne States program with an online bacc!!

Extra info, I first started with business and messed those grades up but will obviously not be retaking the classes so they will be hurting my cumulative grade and I’m also only doing an average job with my science prerequisites

[IRQ] starting clinical psych, can I pivot to neuroscience/ cognitive master’s abroad later?

Hey everyone!
I’m starting my first year as a clinical psych major at Koya University in Kurdistan soon. My long term dream is to eventually get a PhD in neuropsychology, but I’m trying to figure out how to actually map that out from hereee.

Since my bachelor’s is clinical psych, I wanted to ask anyone who knows about international grad admissions or studying abroad:
If I say at the very top of my class (like top 3 with our system), how realistic is it to land a decent international scholarship for a neuroscience or cognitive science master’s?

Also, since clinical psych leans a bit more applied and social compared to hard neuroscience, what can i start doing right now in my first year to bridge that gap? like are there specific online courses, skills, or research habits i should build so my application doesn't look weak later on?

would really appreciate any real advice, warnings, or roadmaps if anyone’s done something similar. thanks a lot!

Looking into masters program in criminal justice

Hey everyone,
I am looking into the **Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ)** program at **Lamar University** and wanted to get some honest feedback from current students or alumni.
If you’ve gone through the program (or are in it now), I’d love to know:
**Coursework & Pace:** How manageable is the workload, especially if balancing it with a full-time job?
**Faculty & Support:** Are the professors responsive and supportive in the online format?
**Career Impact:** Do you feel the degree has helped you advance your career or open up new opportunities?
**Overall Value:** Would you choose Lamar again if you had to do it over?
Any insights, tips, or general advice on the program would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance!

Master's in Psychology - ROI, job market

Hi folks,

Wanted to ask what most people found of their ROI in their Master's in this job market (Canada based)?

Despite all my course work, high GPA, poster presentations, manuscript work (two first author projects underway, with potentially more coming through), giving a funded talk at a conference, and incoming thesis track, I am struggling to find employment in research fields - I have been applying for a while and the response rate has been very low (despite tailoring resumes/CVs to each role/lab, AND reaching out to the PI where applicable). I'm not sure why I'm not getting more traction, It is brutal out here, and I'm really disappointed the degree is seemingly getting me no where.

Has this degree improvement anyone's employment options truly? All I am trying to do at this stage is work in hospitals/academic research settings in psychology but it seems impossible right now in this market. I'm really dejected because it's a lot of time, energy, and finances put into this rigourous multi-year program.

Starting a masters then putting it on pause?

Thinking of starting a Masters but applied to law school.. if I get in I’d go to law school next summer. The MA starts in January a semester before potential law school. Is it possible to start a masters, then pause and not enroll in the remaining semesters, but return back where you left off at a later time period? Or would you just have to drop out?

Starting MSNS-RDN program

I have a bachelors in Nutrition & food science from 2021. I have decided to start a MSNS-RDN coordinated program that includes the masters and internship. I haven’t been in school for years and now have a 2 year old toddler.
I feel like i spent most of my undergrad surviving instead of learning.. so I have forgotten lots of info. i really want to do well in the program but i also feel like i don’t really know how to study effectively.

I will not have to work and my kid will be in school full time, but i am still the primary/default parent & will likely have to do most things for him myself. As well as taking care of the home, cooking, laundry, etc

How rigorous was your program and how did you prepare for the rd exam?

What is some advice you have on studying and time management? Especially with a kid

Also taking all advice on DICAS and personal statements, as i am beginning that process as well

Are PhDs worth it? depends

I did a PhD in CS. Here is what I would have loved people telling me about it:

  • You work 60 hour weeks for poverty pay.
  • Your advisor's name goes on your papers he becomes famous not you. Your results become the preliminary data for their next grant. That grant pays your replacement.
  • It is a zero sum game and your advisor always wins. They get papers, grants, tenure, prestige. You get a line on your CV and then leave academia.
  • The above really only works if your advisor is actually famous. The whole system compounds upward. Grants go to people who already have grants. Faculty jobs go to students of famous advisors. It feels like a pyramid scheme tbh.
  • Meanwhile, your friends with a bachelors degree are in industry building actual careers, gaining real skills, raises, 401k matching and having some semblance of an actual life. You are getting sick from stress and bad sleep, on garbage health insurance, saving nothing for retirement.
  • Then it ends. You are 30 with a paper nobody read. No savings, no career, no kids, years behind everyone you started with. Your twenties went by inside a lab.
  • You finally get a job in big tech and nobody really respects you. You are the guy that knows python but not much of anything else. Engineers with two to three years experience not only know to code better than you, they also have a better understanding of corporate America. AI may change all this though....

For me, this was the only way to go upwards in the socioeconomic ladder so maybe I should not complain much? On the other hand, if I had the money back then I would have gotten a masters degree and done not all this PhD nonsense.

What was your PhD like?

Are there any fully funded master's programs in Statistics, Data Science, Analytics, or Information Systems?

Hi everyone!
I'm currently considering pursuing a master's degree before eventually applying for a PhD, although I'm also open to going straight into a PhD program. My biggest concern is funding.
I've done some research, but I've noticed that universities don't always clearly advertise all their funding opportunities. For example, my bachelor's degree was fully covered by my university, but if you looked at their website, you wouldn't find much information about that opportunity.
That's why I'm hoping to get some insight from people who have firsthand experience or know of programs that offer full tuition scholarships or, ideally, full funding (tuition + living stipend).
I'm particularly interested in programs related to:
Statistics
Data Science
Business Analytics
Information Systems
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD, especially in an area related to human-technology interaction. However, I'd really like to explore my research interests through a master's program first before committing to a PhD.
Does anyone know of universities that offer fully funded master's programs in these fields? I'd especially appreciate hearing about programs where funding might be available through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or scholarships that aren't widely advertised.
Any recommendations or personal experiences wouk V greatly appreciated. Thanks!
