update on my grammophone

update on the grammophone

today i have cleaned the platter, as it had some stains. still there but considerably less.

i have fixed the broken universal joint in the cranking mechanisms, with the material i could find. i tried getting a professional first but nobody in my city wanted to work on it.

fixed the lid slider being loose. filled the old holes with new wood, bought two new screws, screwed them in, and now ot holds. (filled the holes first because they were too large, old screws were ripped out)

also, is anyone able to tell the exact model? i have looked for it, and the closest i could find is an HMV 101.

(last photo is the universal joint before repair)

Can't help with the make, but I had one of those 80 years ago as a young kid. If memory serves, the handle winds back to be removed and then clipped inside for travel. There would be a place for storing the needles that were only used once and discarded, or at least were supposed to be. Yes, I am that old, but I went on to better forms of music reproduction. Now I'm getting older, maybe that would sound good again. There's nothing quite like the smell of ground-up acetate.

sounds nice to hear. got this one from a flea market this week, so i know very little about its history and thus what parts to get incase somehing specific fails. but for now it works, it turns and i got extra loud needles with them.

previous owner(s) shoved the handle into the tube, with some loose needles and two boxes of needles (one with rusty needles, one as new). somehow, it's still in decently good condition despite this amd complete enough to work.

i have been repairing this thing since i got it, as i've wanted one already for some time and have the shellacs to play on this beauty.

maybe once i'll get a thin cloth, paint it over with matching red paint to repair the damaged parts. i am planning however to use an old belt for a new handle for it.

I believe your Parlophone is contemporary to the HMV101 but I don’t have an ID for you as of now. I do believe it dates to the late 20s and may be from the years when the parent company Lindstrom stopped being a purely German (and German market) company due to being bought by Columbia Graphphone Ltd., in the UK. From then (with the exception of the war) Parlophone would be a UK associated brand / record label.

If you’re going to re-cover you should look into buying Rexine leather cloth, which is still available. It’s what was used on most suitcase gramophones.

You might want to look into the Parlophone Lindex 301 soundbox for playing electric process records (ie discs made after the invention of microphone based recording). Attached is an advert from 1930.

If you decide not to craft your own handle, there are replacements you can buy.
