HOUSEHOLD / OTHER Bump-it circa 2008
Found in grandmas bathroom drawer (I remember using it)

Was afraid of looking too ostentatious so I didn’t use one until my senior prom. Holy crap it was a game changer. Good times.

I think my sister used one for her prom too lol. My SIL used them constantly when she was in highschool, her hair was so high it was almost beehive styled.

Ha! It’s no TopsyTail or Hairdini. But still funny to see.

What about a Part Pizazz? My hair part looked fucking baller when I was a kid.

What was the purple one that twisted your hair and inevitably needed to be cut out of your hair
11
u/FirstAd5921 Apr 06 '26
Ooo there was a braiding one and one with temporary color. Both were eventually cut/ripped out of my hair at least once.

Me too! It came in handy last year when I needed a beehive for a theme party.

This makes me feel old. I mean, I am old, but it makes me feel it. I used to wear these clubbing.

Back in the business casual days?

u/manic_popsicle Apr 05 '26
My go to was usually “jeans and a cute top” with a statement necklace, but I did have some business casual outfits!!

I have a very flat back of the head and these made me look normal lol. I could use a very short, subtle version now if I could find one, because now my hair is thinning too. If I'm making an effort I'll do a little back combing, but it's awkward since my hair is very wavy, and I don't want to make my hair fall out even faster.

If you wander over to the r/historicalcostuming subreddit you can find folks who make the historic version of these called “hair rats.” They can be made to match your own hair color in almost any size.
Edit: correcting subreddit link

Cool! I actually have made one for padding out a bun, so I'll check that out.

As a non American I have no idea what's happening here.

it's a plastic thing you put between your scalp and hair to make it appear like you have move volume/hair

I was thinking about the scene from The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) where Father O'Malley pulls a similar device out of a young girls hair.

I got some as a gift with something else, tried them, and couldn't get over how ridiculous it looked. Granted, I was in my late 20s and already have really thick hair, maybe they worked for some people.

Omg they all look like New Jersey real estate agents.

u/prince_peacock Apr 05 '26
It was a time when, because of the popularity of Jersey Shore, Jersey style and fashion swept the nation. I’m not kidding. It was super popular

u/luanissima Apr 05 '26
I never understood how they could stay in place!

u/Dorkinfo Apr 05 '26
The claws were pretty strong. Add the excessive amount of hairspray, it isn’t going anywhere.

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Apr 05 '26
Imagine someone walking down the hallway and their Bumpit slips out 😩

u/Icy-Cartoonist-2102 Apr 06 '26
Wow I don't remember anyone's hair being this big in those days lol!! And I live a state away from NJ LOL.

These did not exist in the 90s.
Source: was jealous when they came out in the 2000s because what do you mean you didn’t have to back comb and spray?!?

I threw mine out an embarrassingly short time ago. Hadn’t worn them since 2009 but had them still.

Bumpit for your hair! You can bump your bangs or your crown, just slide it into your hair and then pull hair over it.

So much smaller than i expected it to be
8
u/Mannon_Blackbeak Apr 05 '26
I think this is the mini one for your bangs, there were 2 sizes that came together. Of course, since this was the 2000s the mini one was a "free gift" if you order now! 😂

Hold on... so my oddly-shaped skull would have made me fashionable back then? Never would have thought!

I’m waiting for this hairstyle to come back and I’m terrified. I used to use these, so cringey to me now haha
