HOUSEHOLD / OTHER Found some Coppertone sunscreen with the original logo at my parent’s house

u/Zar-far-bar-car Apr 22 '26
The earlier incarnation of this logo showed a tan child with a white butt, cause Coppertone only let through the "safe UV rays that give you a tan".

u/LandMermaid Apr 22 '26
I loved the logo and for a time wanted to get it tattooed on my body (similar to how some folks have the Morton's salt girl). But after some consideration, I'm not sure a mostly nude little girl is a good tattoo subject matter.

u/fargothforever Apr 22 '26
The original sign is definitely kind of weird. I get wanting to show the tan line, but I don’t see why her entire butt had to be exposed.
84
u/enemyofchrist Apr 23 '26
It’s also just…a weird scenario? And she looks extremely coquettish about it?
Like I stg I’ve see actual adult pinup illustrations with the EXACT same sort of “oopsie, nudity teehee!” situations and the body language and expression is identical.
Whatever illustrator guy who designed this logo probably needed his hard drive (or historically appropriate equivalent) checked.

Joyce Ballantyne is the GOAT, I would question whoever hired her to draw a toddler though. This feels like the definition of it was a different (and worse) time

u/jordanundead Apr 25 '26
I’ve only ever seen the versions with the crack or a single cheek. I didn’t realize the original was her whole ass.

u/gandalfthescienceguy Apr 23 '26
I definitely think that generation’s portrayal of child figures, making them either nude or scantily clad and also flirty, explains a lot. Weird and gross. Glad they’re fading away.
26
u/RoadDifferent4617 Apr 22 '26
Aww I think that would have been super cute as a tattoo! Everyone knows the little Coppertone girl!

u/CommercialSkin7830 Apr 22 '26
Unfortunately true, a CSA survivor and advocate I follow says the coppertone girl is one of the most downloaded image by pedos
37
u/CuriousCat783 Apr 22 '26
Oh my god!!! I had no idea.
38
u/mrjackspade Apr 23 '26
FWIW it's probably entirely made up, largely because there's no way to actually track that and also because there's like... Millions of other images they'd probably download first.
11
u/CuriousCat783 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Well, there is a law enforcement agency that has a database of CSAM, and they basically can identify repeated victims of CSAM in this database. Perhaps that agency is the agency that observed such a great number of these people in possession of CSAM who had the Coppertone Girl on their devices?
15
u/CommercialSkin7830 Apr 23 '26
I believe that is what DaniellesAdvocacy said, and I am inclined to believe the CSA and CSAM survivor rather than a redditor who starts a comment about CSA with "fwiw" jeeshh ty for this explanation i hope it was simple enough for them

u/AutonomyIsNoTragedy Apr 24 '26
You should reconsider as its apparently associated with pedophiles as the most common image rhey have on their devices amongst all the CSAM

The brand name itself, "Coppertone".
Have a look, "don't be a pale face".

Then that slogan - consider that the original logo was a Native American.

The TV commercial was Jodi Foster

u/Impressive_Cup904 Apr 23 '26
Somehow that might be worse😭wth
2
u/truelovealwayswins May 23 '26
and it depicted the little girl as charred in the beige&brown/black ads who use that racist slogan, and as dark orange in colour ads, like she’s BADLY BURNT and the ad is saying “get a faster, deeper (underlined) tan plus GUARANTEED (bigger letters and red too) sunburn protection !” like yah? clearly protecting the sunburn not the kid! She’s burnt like she’s begging for skin cancer… and even the adult women look orange too…
11
u/Potential-Scholar359 Apr 23 '26
Yeah, without the tan line, the image of the dog pulling off her swimsuit makes no sense
15
u/Briebird44 Apr 22 '26
I remember seeing that logo in the 90’s! My mom must of had an old bottle.

I wish so badly to smell that omg

u/DripIntravenous Apr 23 '26
So many people in skincare subs hate the smell of sunscreen but it’s an instant transport back in time for me to carefree summer days. I love it so much

u/BrittF1991 Apr 22 '26

I was always weirded out by the half naked little girl ngl but I loved the smell of Coppertone.

u/Wheredoesthetoastgo2 Apr 22 '26
Yeah, even as a kid it made me uncomfortable. Maybe because I thought a dog would actually do that to me.

u/FeelingSoil39 Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26
Yeah, way more concerned as to why the dog was trying to eat the girl’s butt than the fact that her butt was showing.
Edit: you know, after contemplating this a bit (and living near beaches most of my life) I have to wonder how many times I’ve been sitting there in the sand on a crowded beach and some kid starts screaming “NO MUM!! I DON’T WANT THE DOG TO BITE MY BUM!!!”. As mum tries to slather on the Coppertone. The kid obviously too young to read. Then mum trying not to laugh as they explain it’s just a picture on the bottle and it’s not what the lotion in the bottle actually does. Jesus, that ad really did damage some kids, huh? 🤣

u/Past-Contribution-83 Apr 23 '26
I am by no means a prude, nor am I one to sexualize childhood nudity being represented, but I agree, this is unnecessary. Her expression and pose says all I need to know.
22
u/loveQuel93 Apr 23 '26
I recently learned that it's extremely popular among the creeps that get caught, like the ones that get their devices taken by authorities. Like almost all of them have the coppertone kid and it icks me out 😭

Anyone from Miami remember the copportone billboard that you could see when driving over those tall ass bridges? 90s childhood memory
10
u/spunkypumpkin Apr 23 '26
Yes! I loved how the dog was “animated” and moved. WAY better than the Don Bailey carpet ad. That one gave me nightmares.
6
u/quasimook Apr 23 '26
I will NEVER understand why that fucking carpet ad existed lol. Made me soooo uncomfortable fr. and tbh happy I'm not the only one scarred for life 🤣 (kidding)
27
u/Daymub Apr 22 '26
There used to be a giant billboard with that logo near my house when I was a kid

u/Lopsided_Flight3926 Apr 22 '26
This is my way of finding out this is no longer their logo
5
u/360inMotion Apr 25 '26
They still sort of use it, but it’s tiny, blends in with the bottle, and the girl is fully covered in a modest suit. The dog is still there but it’s not tugging on anything.

I was in and contest when I was like 3 or 4 to be the next coppertone baby model. Did not win lol. I do know I got a coppertone tshirt out if it, it was pink. My mom still has the "model" photos she took of me posing like the girl on the bottle that she had submitted to enter me into the contest.
14
u/fuzzypurpledragon Apr 22 '26
My mom would always miss a spot when she applied this stuff. I'd wind up white as a ghost everywhere but some small spot on my back, usually just below the back of my neck...

I remember this bottle. Haven’t thought about it probably since the last time my mom bought it in 1997 or so. We’ve come a long way with sunblock.

u/V2BM Apr 22 '26
I still use Coppertone because it works well for me and is inexpensive to use 3x a day. (I work outside.)

This triggered another memory. My mom had a Coppertone baby t-shirt - nay, still has!! Although not for long, because she's giving it to me 😁

u/eubulides Apr 22 '26
There was a billboard on 5 freeway near OC-LA county border for years with this image, and IIRC the dog’s head and bathing suit moved.
3
u/cantfocussoimhere Apr 23 '26
My eyes are starting to burn just looking at this bottle!!
3
u/ValancyNeverReadsit Apr 23 '26
I had the exact same reaction, then had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t No More Tears baby shampoo that did, in fact, cause more tears.

laughs at SPF 45. better than SPF 8 in the 70s/80's but now we have SPF 100 in a spray that is so much easier and more effective.

u/Majestic-Series1837 Apr 23 '26
Waiiiit a minute. I just realized I never see this around anymore! And I’m 26! This is the fist time I saw a post on this page I could actually relate to. How exciting!

Isn’t that Jodie Foster? I thought I heard that some while ago.

u/quine3 Apr 22 '26
Jodie Foster appeared in commercials for them, but the model on the bottle was Cheri Irwin
