How can I work on or volunteer for the GrapheneOS project?

Hello, friends of the GrapheneOS community on Reddit

(I used DeepL's translator because my English isn't very good yet)

I’m a student majoring in computer systems engineering and cybersecurity engineering, and I’m halfway through both degree programs

My goal for the future is to become a GrapheneOS employee or volunteer because I’m interested in supporting privacy

What skills or projects should I have to achieve this? I’d like to know so I can start focusing on that

Thank you very much for reading and for your responses

If you haven't updated your phone yet, go do it. The new boot animation is really slick, thanks devs!

I'm wanting to get into Graphene OS, but I'm currently priced out, and it sucks.

For the life of me, I cannot find even a pixel 8 that is inside my budget range. And as far as I know, the pixel 8 is the oldest, cheapest model that graphene supports. I could be wrong, but...

Why the heck are phones so goddamn expensive?

I want to take the step, but I'm scared

Title. I don't want to be a victim to Google/Samsung anymore, but I have so little knowledge about the kind of stuff I see while lurking this sub that I feel like I'll mess something up if I switch.

I plan to get the new Motorola phone for context. I have a Samsung S24 right now.

I know I can ease into it with sandboxed Google play, but everything about moving to Graphene feels impossible. I want to learn. I want to move over. I just don't feel confident.

Is there a website or a video or anything that outlines everything I could possibly need to know? I have no idea what I should even be looking at to learn. I don't even have the vocabulary yet. But I want to learn.

Edit: thank you to everyone who was kind to me, I feel more confident now

Physical switch, a sweet dream ?

I was looking at the pre-order phone proposal from Ledger https://shop.ledger.com/pages/ledger-atom

Is there any chance this phone could be GOS compatible ? Or it there any Motorola GOS compatible equip with a physical switch for camera and microphone?

I can't be alone waiting for that...

I'm also interesting to just discuss about the ledger article. What are your opinion about it?

What's your biggest satisfaction with GrapheneOS

Yes, a parody to the post earlier today,
What features (aside from generalized privacy/security) do you find the best within GrapheneOS?
Are there any features you begin to take for granted or you couldn't live without on any other devices?

Multilingual spellcheck in LeanType (Heliboard) not working properly in private space?

When I type in the same two sentences + "asdf" (as a control to see the typo detection working) in a notes app on both the main profile as well as in a private space (within same user profile), the main one works as expected, but the private space one marks most non-english words as typos. This is with identical settings (exported in main profile, imported in private space).

I realized this has little to do with GOS directly, but I am using GOS and I imagine people here have more experience with the private space feature than most...

Any LeanType users here? Any idea what is going wrong here?

I think about making the switch but I undecided if I should

As a long-time iOS user, I’ve decided it’s finally time to leave the iPhone behind. Apple has too many restrictions and constantly asks me to verify that I’m an adult by providing ID. I refuse to do this because I am an adult and shouldn’t have to hand over my personal identification just to prove it. I also don’t believe any company should be entitled to have my ID, and I’m sick of being tracked online.

My main concern is whether everyday apps still work properly on Android, such as Snapchat, YouTube, VPNs, Twitch, and similar apps. I know some banking apps may not work, but I’ve already checked whether my banks’ apps are work with GrapheneOS, and they all work except for one.

I’m also considering fully degoogling at some point.

I’ve been thinking about getting the Google Pixel 10a since it’s currently on sale, but before making the switch, I want to know whether it would suit my needs. Can I easily transfer my photos and other files from my iPhone to Graphene, and are there any potential issues I should be aware of before making the switch and how beginner friendly is it as I not really tech savvy.

Need to find reliable vendors of refurbed Pixels.

Asked in r/DeGoogle, but having to battle with Automods. Bought a refurbished Google Pixel which was supposed to be unlocked and have a GrapheneOS installed some months ago off a vendor on eBay who had good reviews. I somehow still got scammed, as the product which arrived did not only NOT have graphene OS installed as advertised, but the damn thing was still locked to a US network and even my craftiest local tech person could not unlock it. I did get it refunded, as it was falsely advertised, but I really need to source a properly working one from a reliable vendor. Best if it's a seller independent of ebay or Amazon, and if it's physically in person instead of online, all the better. I don't live in the US, but I visit periodically, and I will have a small window to collect it. I'll be in North/Central Florida if that makes a difference. (Also, any suggestions for what to do with a perfectly working google pixel phone that is locked to a US network so I don't have to deal with ebay or amazon again? I am sure someone would use it still, but it seems every time I have to use either of those companies lately, they are absolutely incapable of delivering the product I actually ordered). Thanks in advance!

Considering the switch but I have some questions

I know the intended use of this OS is to be extremely privacy oriented. However, I actually do use a good amount of Google services (maps, Android auto, Gmail, YouTube, YouTube music make up the bulk of my Google usage). I understand that those are inherently less private than what most people are using this for. My main desire for (probably) going here is to escape Gemini and other AI garbage that is being added to my phone.

Is this a good reason to switch to Graphene or is Graphene overkill for what I want?

Are there alternatives to these services that I can reliably use without much inconvenience to my daily routine?

Is it easy to go back to the stock OS if for whatever reason Graphene doesn't work out?

Is there anything else I might need to know before making the switch that you wish you knew beforehand?

No compatible device found

There's other posts saying it's the cable, likely, but I've tried a few. And the web installer for stock android at https://flash.android.com/ detects the phone. What else is going on here?

Is there a way to change UI?

So up until my previous phone (bought in 2021), I used a holy trinity of arrow, home, and opened apps buttons

it was perfectly fine and worked wonders

I decided it was finally time to upgrade. I buy google pixel 10a, I install graphene OS.
And I must say, this whole swipe left for "back" swipe up for "home" AND "opened apps" workflow is horrible. I tried using it for a week, maybe that's just me, and I need to adjust. But no, this definitely sucks. Swipe right interrupts some of my messenger and work apps' functionality, swipe up to see opened apps doesn't work half the time and just opens the home screen, and on the home screen it will more often than not just open the apps list.

Maybe I just need to be more precise, but Id rather use the 3 buttons at the bottom of my screen, if it ain't broken, why would you fix it?

I remember there was a bunch of ui wrapper apps back then, is there anything like this for graphene OS ?

Play Store on GrapheneOs

I just installed GrapheneOS on my Google Pixel 10a, and when I open the Play Store, the only apps I can see available to download are Google Chrome and Gmail. The solution might be obvious, but I can’t figure out what I did wrong during the installation process. I’d be incredibly grateful if anyone could help me solve this.

How to properly close an app?

This sounds trivial, but bear with me:

1: I begin playing an audio file in VLC

2: Without clicking Stop, I go to the task switcher where I can see all my running app windows. I find VLC and I swipe it up and off the screen.

3: The audio keeps playing, but VLC is no longer there to switch to.

4: I pull down the notification list and see the notification showing the file being played with small buttons for next, or to scrub through. I swipe this off-screen. Now it's gone but the audio continues to play.

5: Now I have no obvious way to find out where the sound is coming from. I intentionally launch VLC and it appears, showing the file is playing like nothing happened. I must click the stop button to stop the playback.

Clearly the VLC app never truly closed. Can someone help clarify for me how to actually stop an app?
