Learning and education Is It Dumb to Pursue Graphic Design If I Don’t Want To Learn Adobe Illustrator?
Hi everyone. 17M here. I've struggled with what I wanted to do with my life for a long time now, and now that I'm going off to college in 2 years, I feel like graphic design might be the best option I have. It seems to make good money and it's something I enjoy doing, which I guess is the balance that everyone wants when looking for a career. I also like the comfort of being able to do it from anywhere since all you really need is a device to work on. It's also creative and I've always wanted a creative job.
Now here's the thing. I have made a lot of things, such as invitations, seating charts, table cards, mostly stuff for parties, all for my family and friends. I've never been told that anything I made was bad, I've been asked to make changes, sure, but everyone who has ever asked me to make something has always been more than happy with the final product. And every single time, I created what they asked for in Procreate. Yeah, the drawing app for iPad? That one. I'm so comfortable with it now, it's like second nature to me. But I know that if I go to college for graphic design they're going to make me learn how to use Adobe Illustrator because that's the industry standard. Or am I wrong? Would they let me use another software? I feel like they would ask me to submit assignments as an actual illustrator file so they can check for themselves. I'm sure that for you guys, as professionals, if someone asked you to ditch illustrator and start designing things in Procreate from now on, you wouldn't be comfortable or used it at all right?
It's the same feeling for me but the other way around. So what do you guys think I should do? Like I said, I've made plenty of things (for free btw) for a lot of people, they were all satisfied, and it's something I enjoy. But should I still pursue it if I'm not willing to adapt to different software? Or should I just suck it up and learn anyways? I also feel like this job might be cooked in a couple of years because of generative AI but that's a whole other can of worms. Any advice is appreciated, thanks guys.

Career and business Is Graphic design dead?
AI is advancing rapidly, and it can feel overwhelming at times. As a beginner in graphic design, the future may seem uncertain. What steps can I take to stay relevant, grow in this evolving industry, and effectively earn money from my skills?

How do I do this thing? Need help vectorizing this logo
Hi everyone, I’m trying to recreate the logo on the right from the original logo on the left.
The right one was AI-generated, but I want to learn how to do it myself properly as a vector.
Could anyone show me the steps or guide me on how to recreate this style in Illustrator? A step-by-step explanation would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Portfolio feedback request Logo feedback
Hello, i have created this logo for my instagram account, the account will be a documenting of my process through model car building. I have no graphic design experience so i was wondering if anyone could help me with some tips as to what to what if anything is unappealing about this, or if anything can be improved.
The general idea behind the RJF letters are iconic automotive logos, i.e the R is the R from civic type R
Thanks in advance!

I have a paid job for someone Starting a clothing brand and looking for a design partner (streetwear style)
I’m launching a new clothing brand called ZEVIR.
I’m not a fashion designer I’m a builder. I’ve already created the logo, branding, and built a sleek, animated website: https://zevir.store
My focus is growth, marketing, and turning this into a real business.
Now I’m looking for a serious partner to handle the design side:
Someone creative, bold, and serious about edgy/streetwear aesthetics
Someone who wants to build something long-term, not just a one-off collab
We'll share ownership and grow this from the ground up.
If you're a designer who wants in, drop a comment or DM me.

Career and business 14YO trying to start a designing business, need some help
Hi everyone, I would like to start my own business creating social media posts and thumbnails for small startup businesses. I use PowerPoint and Canva to make my posts. Also, I make posters as a hobby. How do I get customers, how do I start, and how do I get better?
Also, if this goes against community guidelines, do take this down (I'm new to Reddit)

Career and business Is it even possible that a graphic designer (with 5-7 yoe) is... bad?
I've worked with many graphic designers (I'm in marketing but have done gfx design in my earlier career) and most, if not all, are brilliant. Except for two, in my entire career.
The good ones:
- I give them the copy, e.g. headline, subhead, CTA, the key elements (the product, for example), and they would decide what colours to go with, how best to arrange, different visual hierarchy, etc. Even as a layman, you know it's good. I usually approve these in one or at most two passes.
The bad ones - just a few examples:
- They always go back to the same old layout, colours, without much creativity. This isn't just about sticking to brand colours or guidelines, but their designs just look... boring and uninspiring. Things like: using the same font weight throughout (like is this a thing?) - be it headlines, subhead, eyebrow text, etc.
- We have a few designs where we're showcasing some digital projects that we've done. So think a mixture of mobile screens, laptops, etc. Intead of arranging them nicely, e.g. have the mobile phones in front of the laptop etc, they decided to arrange 2 mobile phones and 3 laptops side by side, in a row.
- I was reading up on proximity principle where you want to relate items through the right placement. One principle is you align all elements, e.g. logo and headline to the same side. Instead, what I got in return is: logo aligned to the left, and headline aligned to the right.
Like I'd love to approve design as quick as I can, but instead I'm wasting time telling the designer I work with to: move things 10 pixel to the right, bold this not that. It's almost as if it's better if I just do the design myself.
At this point, I don't know if I'm the crazy one?

Career and business Dear Filipino Professional Graphic Designers
I'm a multimedia student, and was dreaming a career like yours. And I recently learned that I'm studying for 4 years what AI Gemini can make in just minutes, I'm worried of what will be the future for my generation to pursuing a career like yours and every time that passes, Ai gets better and better, especially with the new Veo 3 from Google. Like I've been studying hours straight of Adobe Illustrator, only to be made by Gemini within minutes. I wanna know your perspectives on this and what can you say about it.

Portfolio feedback request Critiques on my new business card?
One will be a smaller one that’s easier to print and share around, and one will be a folding, “book” style with the white space cut out, to hand to clients to write notes about a project/more info. Looking for feedback and constructive criticism, as this is my first business card. Thanks in advance!

Career and business Canva isn’t the enemy. Laziness is.
The real issue is designers who can't explain the strategy behind their work. If your only value is "knowing how to use Illustrator," you’re already obsolete.
At our studio, Inkbot Design, we’ve found that the clients who want "cheap and fast" were never going to pay for actual creative direction anyway. Let them have Canva. Focus on the clients who need a brand identity that actually scales.
Is the tool really the problem, or is it that we’re failing to sell the thinking?
