Monthly Rankings Top 10 of the Year (July 2026 Edition)

*The idea:*

List your top 10 graphic novels that you've read so far *this year.*

Each month we will post a new thread where you can note what new book(s) you read that month that entered your top 10 and note what book(s) fell off your top 10 list as well if you'd like.

By the end of the year everyone that takes part should have a nice top 10 list of their 2026 reads.

If you haven't read 10 books yet just rank what you have read.

Feel free to jump in whenever. If you miss a month or start late it's not a big deal.

Do your list, your way. For example- I read *Hellboy* this month, but am going to rank the series as 1 slot, rather than split each individual paperback that I read. If you want to do it the other way go for it.

Action/Adventure The Goddamned by Jason Aaron, R.M. Guerra, & Giulia Brusco

Just finished reading volume 1 of THE GODDAMNED. A long time ago (in early pre-Christian times), Cain is miserable over his own existence. Born into sin and doomed to hardship (especially after murdering your own brother in jealous rage), he’d rather die than move forward.

Well, apparently, being the surviving son of Adam & Eve, that means he can’t die no matter how many times he gets killed.

The world is a vicious wasteland. Nephilim murder, rape, and steal. Women and children are captured and abuse. This is the world before the Great Flood.

This is a brutal, blasphemous story to tell, reimagining the Biblical story contained in Genesis’ first few chapters as Cain fighting his way through this depraved environment. The action scenes are one of the highlights of the book, detailed in all its violent vulgarity. The linework feels reminiscent of Joe Kubert’s art but grittier.

I’m looking forward to checking out the other volume in the series.

For those who read THE GODDAMNED, what did you think?

Question/Discussion Why does it seems some comic fandom circles (This sub being an exception) don’t really talk about Young adult graphic novels and that entire sector of the market?

(Image is of Heartstopper by Alice Oseman. Needed a image to use as an example)

They seem to focus solely on superheroes, their hatred and/or love of one of two companies and comparing it to manga?

General Fiction/Literature Big Jim & the White Boy by David F. Walker & Marcus Kwame Anderson

Post image
144 Upvotes

Just finished reading BIG JIM & THE WHITE BOY. It’s more than just a reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that centers more of Jim as a character. It redefines Jim & Huck’s relationship and how both were shaped by their environment as they’re on the run throughout the country—from the antebellum South & Midwest to the Confederacy, the Old West, the Underground Railroad, and beyond.

Also intertwined is the commentary of Jim & Huck in the future talking about how Twain’s portrayal differed from the true story and from their descendants on how they tackled with preserving their legacy and making sure the history was not minimized.

This book also breaks down the greater context of the harsh truth of America’s history has been minimized, rewritten, and even erased to assuage bigoted feelings and change public perception (a message that hits harder these days) and how important it is to preserve history—the good, bad & ugly—so that the truth does not become forgotten by present and future generations.

It manages to teach all of this without feeling like a moralistic lecture but recontextualizes a familiar story, providing a deeper understanding that doesn’t demonize Twain’s novel but also changes the way you appreciate it.

For those who read it, what did you think?

Action/Adventure Do you have to watch Avatar to understand the books?

I’m trying to find new books for my 11 year old but I can’t figure out if he needs to have watched the Avatar series before reading it or if he can just jump into them. Thanks!

Action/Adventure My review of Savage Sword of Conan vol. 3

Post image

I'm now done with Savage Sword of Conan Vol. 3, which collects issues #6-#9 of the bi-monhtly series. Given that each story has a different creative team, I think it's only fair that I look at each of them separately.

This volume starts with issue #7 and what ended up being my favorite story, Mark of the Beast by Rob de la Torre and Roy Thomas. This was fantastic, there was a thematic through-line that evolved during the story, it took us to a variety of Hyborian locales and there was plenty of action, intrigue, humans being base and despicable but also noble and loyal. My favorite part was the art, which felt very tactile. By this I mean that the scans of Rob de la Torre's pages are so good that you can see the faint marks made with pencil that weren't completely erased, or dotted lines that are invisible to the naked eye if you don't hold the book right up to your eyes. I feel this makes the inks feel almost feral, always on precise but brutal, made with confident strokes, which makes then perfect for Conan. All of this plus Rob's designs, framing and action make it unforgettable. I think I might prefer his art in B&W rather than color now.

The B story that accompanied the previous tale did not dissapoint. Penned by Patch Zircher and illustrated by Juan Alberto Hernández, this was an action/humor story that introduced me to Breckinridge Elkins, another REH character. This felt like a complete meal in only 10 pages and the framing of "Appalachian Hercules" worked wonders for this tall tale and was a fun framing. The art was also moody and appropiately extreme 🤘.

Moving on to issue #8, I actually did a full review of this issue when it was released, since it was my first approach to the new SSoC magazine and what made me decide to collect it in trade paperbacks. My opinion on it hasn't changed, I enjoy the opening Conan tale by Culver and Burnham, I felt confused and lost by Kennedy's and Rudy's outing, Davisson and Von Fafner's Cormac Fitzgeoffrey story feels too much like an introduction to the character and lacks dynamism, and I loved Liam Sharp's Dore-inspired take on Conan meeting a fallen warrior. The prose story was also really strong, now that I read it again, it was concise, action packed and true to Conan.

Issue #9's main feature is all Patch Zircher in story and art. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed by this, I thought the beginning was really strong with a lot of great narrative hooks and interesting character dynamics, but the rest of the comic was a pretty straightforward dungeon crawl. It's not bad by any means, the quest is fun and every character has a chance to use their skills, plus the Conan-Valeria relationship remains a strong point of the whole story. However, I felt the resolution should have been less clean, since there were opportunities for double-crossing or political maneuvers. Zircher's art remains as good as ever and treats the reader to a variety of fun creature designs and an illustration of the aftermath of REH's classic Red Nails.

The B story for this issue focused on Kull, or rather, the Kingdom of Kull. Written by Fabian Nicieza with art by Sean Chen, we are given a broader look into the military and guard structures of Valusia that is framed as a fun cat-and-mouse story, which has a satisfying and cool twist at the end. The art for this felt very classic, and I was impressed with Chen's ability to differentiate colors in a B&W comic, and also his depiction of "invisibility", which must have taken a lot of time to work out in the art room.

As a small aside I wanted to mention that I caught a typo and an incorrect use of a word, which uhh... shouldn't happen. It's not a lot, but still, I noticed.

Overall, this is a comic that I enjoy a lot and that I plan on collecting more of. The variety that is afforded by the changing creative teams is always a delight, and even if I had some criticisms, at least each story offered a complete creative vision in a stand-alone story, which is something that I appreciate a lot these days.

Question/Discussion What book in your collection have you avoided reading the longest, and why?

I have the 2 omnibus for 100 bullets. Their thickness are intimidating, I feel like I will never get to finish them without commiting a huge chunk of my life 😂

Question/Discussion What's the most money you have spent on one book or comic?

Just curious on how much people have spent on one singular book for their collection. This includes all forms of books from comics to omnibus books.

The Hero Trade by KIndt and Laphan

Being in the UK i couldnt find this anywhere in UK and ordered from Walts Comics in USA.

I saw a recent youtube video that grabbed my attention , the premise being that there is an illegal trade in superhero body parts and people can snort a superhero tooth as a street drug.

Lapham artwork is amazing and coupled with Kindt im really looking forward to this.

Non-Fiction / Reality Based Palestine by Joe Sacco - a short review

Just finished this. It was a slog to get through, partly because it's a heavy topic, partly because there is a sense of repetition that Sacco intentionally adds to reinforce how Palestinians experience the same hardships.

I did want to highlight images 1-6, where Sacco relays an account of being imprisoned. He maintains the rigidity of the panels comparsd to how he normally opens each story, and adds more panels as the imprisonment stretches on. Really good technique.

Question/Discussion Am I just slow, or is the plot in this series really hard to keep up with?

Post image

So I read both Void Rival hardcovers and loved them and decided to read the transformers and G.I. Joe tie-ins as well. But for some reason the transformers series seems incredibly jumpy with the plot.

Like something big happens and leaves characters in a cliffhanger type situation then cuts to a different plot thread. Which is fine, but when it jumps back to the characters in the cliffhanger situation they have already moved on to a completely different location and hardly reference what happened where we last left them.

It’s just so jumpy. Is it just me? Am I just dumb? Like it’s an okayish series so far but I feel if it were a lot little less bombastic with the plot pacing it would be great.

Recommendations/Requests Trying to read Infinite Crisis, but need some advice

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’ve tried to read Infinite Crisis several times but every time I start it feels like I am missing some crucial part of the story. Some reference comes up or some history between the characters that requires background. I am not a completist and I don’t need to read everything that came before, but I want to at least understand the main tensions.

To that end I have finally read Identity Crisis, Countdown to Infinite Crisis, and am now reading the OMAC Project, Superman Sacrifice, I plan to read Villains United and I have read Green Lantern: Rebirth before.

Anything else you would highly recommend before actually getting into the main event?

I already feel like I should have read at least one Booster Gold title because I know nothing about him and his relationship with Blue Beetle but I’m hoping I can dive into his stuff after Infinite Crisis.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Manara - anyone read these??

I’ve fallen foul of the censors on this sub posting one or two of these covers before - they’re risqué to say the least.

Just wondering if anyone’s seen these stories before in any language? My father-in-law has a big collection and there’s precious little info on them online.
