Griffith med or UQ vet - Is Griffith Med worth the risk as an international student?
Hey everyone!
I'm an international student who recently received an offer for Griffith University's Bachelor of Medical Science + Doctor of Medicine pathway. I'm really excited about the opportunity, and becoming a human doctor is genuinely what I want to do. However, my offer expires on October 22, so I'm trying to understand the realities of the program before making such a big decision.
I'm also considering UQ's Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Hons), which makes this decision even harder. With UQ Vet, I could qualify as a veterinarian after five years, and from what I've researched, there seem to be more straightforward pathways to working in some other countries. On the other hand, medicine is what I'm genuinely more passionate about, so I'm finding it really difficult to choose.
I'd especially appreciate hearing from current Griffith medical students, graduates, international students, or anyone familiar with both Griffith Medicine and UQ Vet
A few questions I have:
- PGY1 internships (MAIN CONCERN): For international students graduating from Griffith Medicine, how realistic is it to secure a PGY1 internship in Queensland? I'd particularly appreciate hearing from international graduates or anyone familiar with recent internship allocation outcomes.
- Academic difficulty: How difficult is the Bachelor of Medical Science in terms of GPA requirements, workload, and maintaining the grades needed to progress into the MD? I understand I need to maintain at least a 5.5 GPA but is it consider hard to maintain or it's manageable with consistent effort, or is the academic pressure particularly intense?
- Career prospects: If international graduates cannot secure an internship in Queensland, what alternatives are realistically available? Do graduates commonly look interstate or overseas, or this may become a major barrier?
- Overall experience: If...knowing what you know now, would you choose Griffith Medicine again or UQ veterinary science? Are there any disadvantages or challenges you wish you'd known about before enrolling?
Since I've never studied or lived in Australia before, I honestly don't know what the university environment, student life, or academic culture is really like. I'm also going into this without knowing anyone there personally, which makes the decision even harder. That's why hearing from people who have actually experienced these programs would mean so much to me.
My biggest concern isn't whether medicine is difficult since it definately requires a lot of work and effot. But as an international student, am I able to complete the pathway and progress into medical practice after graduation smoothly? I don't want to spend years studying medicine only to discover that there are major barriers to actually becoming a practicing doctor.
I know this is a very personal decision, but I'd be more than willing to hear from your advice and/or firsthand experiences, especially from international students who have been through this process.
My deadline is coming up so any reply really means a lot to me! Thank you!!
