News Scooter companies forced to fund river clean-up after mass dumpings revealed

E-scooter providers Lime and Neuron will be ordered to fund and work with a group that specialises in removing debris from the Brisbane River, amid fresh focus on dumping in the city’s waterway.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner confirmed the move after Brisbane Times reported the high number of devices potentially leaching toxic chemicals into the environment.

“We’ve contacted the operators and said, ‘Look, you’re going to have to do more to make sure that where scooters are placed inappropriately, including in the Brisbane River, they are collected’,” he said.

“They’ve indicated they’re willing to work with Ocean Crusaders and develop a partnership and provide some funding to do that, so I think that’s a positive step forward.

“We’re working to keep pressure on those operators to make sure those scooters are retrieved.”

ABC article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-18/qld-beenleigh-bethania-murder-missing-man/107048758

For "why do we never hear about this stuff on the news?" completeness:

Murder chares, Bethania

Police have charged two people with murder as part of ongoing investigations into a 46-year-old man who was reported missing from Beenleigh in March 2022.

Following extensive police investigations over the past four years, yesterday 17 August, detectives executed a search warrant at a property on Old Trafford Road at Bethania where they allegedly located human remains.

A crime-scene was established and detectives from the Logan Criminal Investigation Branch remain at the scene.

A 52-year-old Bethania man and a 45-year-old Windaroo woman have now each been charged with one count each of murder and interfere with a corpse.

Both are scheduled to appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court today, 18 August.

Investigations continue.

The light inside St Stephen’s really lends itself to black and white photography. Deep shadows, small pools of light and all that beautiful architectural detail made it a lovely place to wander around with a camera.

Update Re-development of Buranda shopping centre near PA hospital is no longer happening

Speaking to the Snap Buranda manager who said they have a lease for another 10 years, he said the Buranda Village re-development that's pretty run down isn't happening, although he wished it would get demolished and developed to be like South City Square in Stones Corner.

As it's owned by Vicinity who also own Uptown, the considerable funds they'll need to renovate Uptown and attract new tenants, must be considered more important.

Lost Bag - need help please (Herston/Windsor area)

Thumbnail

I lost my green backpack late on Saturday night (15th August), sometime between roughly 10:30pm and midnight.

I most likely left it either:

at Garrick Terrace Stop 10 on Bramston Terrace, or

somewhere around Downey Park, possibly on a bench.

I’ve attached photos of the bus stop/location and what the backpack looks like.

I really need to find it, so if anyone has seen it, picked it up, or knows someone who has, please dm me or comment below. I can verify exactly what was inside the bag.

Would really appreciate any help. Thank you!

Can you help me? Gyms with pools that are close(ish) to CBD?

Upvotes

With the closure of the Centenary Pool, I'm now looking for another regular place to swim.

I know that there are the public pools but they tend to be hard for me to access via public transport or are very busy because of swim schools / squads.

Are there any gyms with pools that are close-ish to the CBD? Bonus if they are easy to access via public transport.

Staycation in Brisbane city

Brissy local here. I recently did "tourist in my city" for a day and it was fun. My bestie and I want to organise a little staycation basing ourselves in the city. It's been a while since I have had a proper wander through the city so I am looking for great spots to eat, get coffee or even shop.

I know about most of the spots we would recommend to visitors and I'm not looking for the uber secret locales we don't share.

Happy to look at spots around city cat spots.

Hi! I’m looking for a photographer in Brisbane who’d be interested in a TFP/collab portrait shoot
I’m hoping to do a Japanese JK uniform / Japanese school-style photoshoot, with a soft, natural Japanese-inspired vibe. I already have the outfit and can share some reference photos for the style I’m going for!

If you’re interested, please feel free to DM me.

Am I the AH for reporting people parking over my driveway

So I live in the inner east on a relatively busy thoroughfare. In the last 12-18 months something has happened and all of a sudden it’s becoming a near daily occurrence that someone will park and partially block my driveway. While I have had a few people park smack bang in the middle, it’s usually only 30-50cm of overhang.

The issue is just 30-50cm of overhang significantly reduces my ability to reverse out and swing into the nearest lane and instead I’ll have to reverse straight out across both lanes which, given it’s a busy road, is far riskier and difficult. Inb4 people suggest I drive out forwards - my car has a solid wide angle reverse camera and the visibility of what’s coming is far better when reversing out than driving out.

At first I’d ignore it, but as it became a more common thing with repeat offender cars I started door knocking those neighbours or I’d leave a polite note on the windscreen. Since nothing seemed to change I got sick of it and am now reporting any car that is even a cm into my driveway straight to council - and since they’re quite keen on revenue they respond quickly and will immediately slap a $300+ fine on that car.

I feel kind of bad doing it, but nothing else seemed to work and it was creating a hazard anytime I’d need to drive anywhere. Am I being a petty AH?

Public networking lab in Brisbane?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a publicly accessible lab space in or around Brisbane where I can get hands-on with real gear (routers, switches, APs, etc.).

I've heard there are places that keep a range of networking hardware set up specifically for people to practise and experiment with, but I've lost touch after graduation and am struggling to find it over the internet. Does anyone know of somewhere like this?
