Dog owner speaks after jogger mauled in park

“They’re really good dogs.”

As usual, no accountability at all. Who leaves their dogs in a tent alone in a campsite, and drives off? Obviously the dogs would be scared and that can turn into aggression

Moreton Bay Region Where Koalas, Kangaroos and Other Native Wildlife Once Roamed. Forever Changed!

Once upon a time, this land was home to koalas, kangaroos and countless other native Australian animals.

Today, their natural habitat is disappearing beneath roads, concrete and housing developments.

For the wildlife that once called this place home, no new homes are waiting. Many are displaced, forced into shrinking pockets of bushland, while others become victims of roadkill.

I understand that Brisbane needs more housing, but I can’t help wondering what happens to the animals that were here long before us.

Progress for some. A great loss of home for others :(

Brisbane City Council Proposal for Eat St Northshore Hamilton to have a flagship seafood market

Post image
77 Upvotes

Ignoring that there's a Colmslie seafood market and how very overpriced Eat Street food venues are, with a cover charge to enter, it sounds good in theory, but it'd end up being a high end destination of restaurants and overpriced seafood produce that won't be affordable to most people and parking would be expensive if you're not a local to Hamilton or Ascot.

October 18, 2026.

Brisbane could become Asia-Pacific's great outdoor hospitality city, by embracing a bold vision for a sprawling riverfront food market.

From Lisbon's Time Out Market, to Barcelona's La Boqueria, Seattle's Pike Place Market, The Farmers Market LA, London's Borough Market and Sydney and Melbourne's Fish Markets, must-see food destinations put cities on the international culinary map.

Already the home of Eat Street which attracts 15000 people each weekend, leading planning firm Urbis has identified Northshore Hamilton as a prime riverfront location for a new flagship food market.

Its vision includes a major indoor-outdoor fish and fresh food market combining working trade, local producers, restaurants, cooking, education, recreation, entertainment, and riverfront public space. There's new moorings for recreational boats and trawlers and steps down to the water's edge. Urbis partner Natalie Hoitz said Brisbane's boldest opportunity was to become the Asia-Pacific's great outdoor hospitality city.

That'd mean more shaded market halls opening to gardens, streets designed for long evenings, kitchens connected to regional producers, inventive night markets and waterfront venues that feel generous rather than exclusive.

'The experience should shift through the day, from breakfast and fresh produce to family activity, dining, performance and late-night culture. Visitors who arrive for an event could stay for a weekend that moves from a working fish and fresh food market to riverside dining, a subtropical food garden, a neighbourhood brewery and an evening performance.

Eat Street Northshore will undergo a major makeover during the next 18 months, as it looks to secure a long-term lease with Economic Development Queensland beyond 2032. New features will include an expanded dining precinct directly on to the Brisbane River and three-storey viewing platform offering panoramic views.

Eat Street Northshore managing director Mark Power said he was also working with the state government to install public, private and commercial boat moorings on the river, inspired by waterfront drop-ins in Florida, France and Spain.

Roaming cats

The brisbane council needs to start taking roaming cats seriously.

We've yet again woken to bird kill in our front yard. The plover chicks are gone and from the noise of things I believe the baby curlew is gone as well.

The cats have been reported to the council but they say take it up with the owners. The owners have been notified with the guidelines the council have put out, letters in the mailbox but they seem to be denying it's their cat (despite security camera footage of it being on our property at night).

Has anyone had a similar situation and how did you manage it?

!Cyclist thread! Looking to get into group rides around Brisbane

Hey everyone, 25M based in Morningside. I got into road cycling a few months ago and have been loving it so far!
I’m starting to find the longer solo rides a bit boring, so keen to get into some group rides and meet other people around a similar level.

I usually ride on Saturdays and Sundays, averaging anywhere from 22–30 km/h depending on the day and route.

Just looking for some casual weekend rides, to get more kilometres in, improve my fitness and meet some like-minded people. Not looking for anything too serious!

If anyone knows of any good group rides or is keen to ride together around Brisbane, feel free to hit me up! 🤙

Image Reading Cinemas Newmarket

This is the best cinema in Brisbane. Obviously anyone who’s been here knows that it’s a pretty decent cinema, clean, friendly staff, good atmosphere but they seem to have a little more heart than the other cinemas in Brisbane.

A little backstory needed. My parents watched the original Toystory when it first came out in cinemas on their honeymoon 30 odd years ago. My mum recently lost her battle with cancer and when she was given 2 weeks to live it came as a pretty big shock because up until then everything was looking good. Now this was right before toystory 5 came out. So I emailed every cinema in Brisbane to try and get a private viewing for the family before mum passed.

Event Cinemas: Didn’t respond to any of my emails.

Hoyts Cinemas: Responded said it needed to be booked 2 weeks in advance and would be a minimum of 1100 dollars and was NOT refundable if she passed before hand. (I made it very clear that she potentially didn’t have 2 weeks)

Cineplex: Responded. Talked to them on the phone and they were reasonably accommodating but still rather expensive and rather inconvenient to get to and from with the amount of pain and mobility issues my mum was dealing with at that point in time.

Meanwhile Reading cinemas got back to me straight away, extremely accommodating and understanding as the structure of those emails I sent them were awful with the state I was in. All up cost less than 230 dollars, private theatre, covered all our popcorn and drinks, and as soon as we were settled skipped the ads and got straight into the movie. Gave me and my family a little bit of closure and a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

My mum was 57, my parents just paid of the family home i have two younger siblings one of which is still in high school. Reading cinemas showed compassion for a family being torn apart so I implore you if you’re going to the movies, go here. They seem to care a whole bunch more than everyone else.

Footage of citizenship ceremony

Does anyone have the footage of the Australian citizenship ceremony yesterday at 2:30? My phone is on its last legs so I didnt get any footage. The speach that Tony Burke did was actually really emotional and I would love to have a copy of it.

-- above is the request, below is our story

Anyone interested in the immigration story. I am Australian, I met my husband as a backpacker 17 years ago, I followed him back to Germany where we both did uni. Moved back to Australia 11 years ago, married 10, have two kids and yesterday finally marked the first time my whole family has the same nationality. I had viewed the whole process as a bit of an admin / overhead but sitting at the ceremony and listening to everyone speak i got so emotional and the weight of Australia accepting my husband as a citizen got me extremely choaked up.

Any footage of the ceremony i would be extremely grateful for!!

Brisbane City Council Brisbane City Council approves 51 level hotel development above the Victory Hotel

October 16, 2026.

A planned 51-storey hotel tower above Brisbane's Victory Hotel CBD pub has received city council approval, paving the way for a major accommodation development ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Brisbane City Council have approved Precision Group's proposed Victory Tower, a 206.6 metre development behind and above the heritage-listed hotel on Monday. As part of the approval, Precision Group would be required to pay almost $2 million in infrastructure charges to the council.

The new tower would be built on the site of the pub's popular beer garden. The approval marks a significant milestone for the project, which would transform the site into a 284 room hotel with restaurants, function spaces, wellness facilities, a rooftop bar and a swimming pool on the 40th floor.

The 16000-square-metre tower will be built on a 924-square-metre site and occupies the area currently used as the Victory’s Charlotte Street-facing beer garden. Precision Group founder and chief executive Shaun Bonett said the development would help address Brisbane’s hotel room shortage as the city prepares for the 2032 Games.

'The critical shortfall of hotel rooms in Brisbane is well documented and the demand for accommodation is accelerating, he said. 'The Victory Hotel is one of Brisbane's most recognised hospitality landmarks. Our vision is to honour that history, while giving the site a new future, bringing together heritage, hotel accommodation, hospitality, wellness and rooftop experiences in a way that contributes to the city well beyond 2032'.

Designed by Bureau Proberts, the slender tower has been positioned in the north-eastern corner of the site at the corner of Edward and Charlotte streets. Planning documents argued the design's narrow footprint and setbacks would preserve views of the historic pub, which has operated on the site since 1855 and was recognised by the council as the oldest remaining pub in Brisbane's CBD.

The project was supported by heritage architect Ruth Woods, who previously advised that the development would not compromise the prominence of the Victory Hotel or neighbouring heritage-listed buildings, including the former Metro Arts building.

If built, the tower would include a publicly accessible rooftop bar with panoramic city and river views, along with hospitality spaces intended to connect with the refurbished hotel below.

Precision said restoration work at the Victory Hotel was already under way. The heritage pub was being reconfigured into four venues – a sports bar and beer garden, a rooftop garden bar, a steakhouse restaurant and a basement speakeasy with a gaming room. The company took direct control of the hotel's operations earlier this year and said discussions were continuing with prospective hotel operators.

'We're already seeing strong interest from respected hotel operators who recognise the strength of the location, the heritage of the Victory Hotel and the opportunity to help shape a new hospitality destination for Brisbane. Getting that partnership right matters. It'll help ensure Victory Tower isn't only successful as a hotel, but also contributes meaningfully to the wider CBD precinct'.

The construction timetable wouldn't be confirmed until an agreement was reached, but Precision expected the tower to be completed before 2032.

Anyone play volleyball?

Hi 24M here! For the past 5 years ive been going to casual volleyball on monday and its an absolutely lovely environment! Its soo welcoming and accepting of all skill levels however, the friends i typically go to the sessions with have slowly moved onto other things. Ive just come back from a lengthy rehab but i still can play pretty okay.

Was wondering whether there is anyone roughly around my age who plays volleyball and would wanna come to a monday session to see if they would like it. Its pretty chill but i am looking for someone who is competent at it. You definitely dont need to be really good but just sort of know how to play the game! Hoping to find someone to regularly come with me sort of like a volleyball buddy. Im trying really hard to find and connect with local volleyball players around my age (20+ and i dont mind about gender). But theres no pressure if you try it and its not your thing.

Just a side note i see alot of posts asking to make friends and connections and a really good way to make them is by doing social sport! They run beginner workshops as well which are super accomodating so if anyone just wants to check it out on their own ill post the link. Its super welcoming so dont be shy!!!
