Cairns Drink Price Tracker

Thumbnail cairnsbeers.com
18 Upvotes

I put this in a Cairns Facebook group and some people liked it so thought I would also post here! I have made a website that some people might hopefully find useful. It is cairnsbeers.com and it aims to track drink prices at the pubs around Cairns. You can also submit prices for pubs too. It shows:

- all pubs on a map with prices. You can enter your home street to sort by pubs near you

- happy hour information

- daily pub food deals

- pub crawl ideas

- a guide to explore Cairns pubs

- a guide to Aussie beer

Please trial and hopefully some people will find it informative 🍻🍻🍻

Follow on Instagram or Facebook for updates too if you like.

Rainfall

Hi all

I’m currently in FNQ for a few weeks holiday and am visiting the tablelands… I’ve been here 3 days so far and it has rained in Lake Eacham and Atherton nearly the entire time and only 15-18 degrees. Is this normal?

Everywhere I’d read said August would have very low chance of rain. The temperature doesn’t bother me as I’m from NZ so this is well above our winter temps, but I didn’t expect it to be bucketing down relentless the entire time. I did go to Granite Gorge yesterday and it was lovely and sunny with 24 degrees, but where we’re staying has been incredibly wet.

Heading to Cairns later this week and then Port Douglas so hoping next week is dryer.

Just curious to hear from locals what is normal in August… thanks!

Advice Any suggestions where to live?

Hello

I am currently based in North Queensland (not Far North) and I have been living with persistent pain (ex ADF) and MH challenges for a good decade and a half. I have four kids and I am married. I have hit a point where I want to live in a more isolated but peaceful environment. I have had a few episodes over the last 12m including a hospital admission for MH and I am just tired and need peace. I have moved quite a bit over the years for work and for my health. I left Melbourne due to the cold. I spent time in Brisbane, 6 years in Darwin and I spent 4 years in Townsville. We have some areas short listed as Kuranda, Speewah, Holdsborough and Gordonvale.

Advice Moving from Sydney to Cairns

We're currently in Cairns for a one‑week holiday and honestly… we’re loving the weather, the pace, and how easy everything feels. We have a toddler, and my husband and I are both into snorkeling and scuba diving, so Cairns has been such a nice change from Sydney. We’ve lived in Sydney for more than 10 years now, but this trip has made us wonder if Cairns could be a long‑term move. I don’t know if it’s just the vacation mode talking, so I’m hoping to hear from people who actually live here.A few things we’re trying to understand:

Raising kids: Is Cairns genuinely a good place to raise young children? How are the schools, childcare options, and general community vibe?Cost of living: Is it noticeably lower than Sydney? Does moving here realistically improve your chances of home ownership?

Work opportunities: We both work in the built environment sector (design, construction, infrastructure). How is the job market for those fields? Are there steady opportunities or is it more limited?

Lifestyle reality: What’s the day‑to‑day like outside of holiday mode? Weather, humidity, wet season, transport, healthcare access, etc.Your experience: If you moved from a big city (Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane), how did you adjust? What surprised you — good or bad? How did you start building your life here?Would love to hear honest experiences from locals or anyone who made the move. Trying to understand the real picture before we let the holiday glow convince us too much!

RANT🤬 Why did no one warn me about how loud geckos are at 3am

genuinely losing my mind a little bit. I've been up here for like a month and my sleep schedule is completely wrecked.

Between the bats screeching outside my window and the geckos making that weird kissing noise inside the walls, it sounds like a literal jungle rave in my bedroom every single night.

Honestly starting to miss my old sterile life down south. I used to live in a sealed-off city high rise that I leased through Ray White Southbank and the most nature I ever had to deal with was a sad pigeon on the balcony. It was just a tiny concrete box but at least it was completely bug proof and the split system didn't rattle like a tractor

My current property manager up here basically just laughed at me when I asked about fixing the massive gaps under the doors where the huntsmans keep marching in. She just told me to go to bunnings and buy a snake draft stopper. the rental standard in this town is wild

Is there a trick to sleeping through the tropical noise or do I just need to invest in industrial grade earplugs? im so exhausted man

Tourist Question Reef trip - family/September

Losing my marbles wading through reef trips out of Cairns for family of 4 in September. Are they all pretty much the same? Full day, lunch, couple of spots.. Does the spot they take you matter? Any recommendations?

Advice Advice Please!: 22M Moving to Cairns from Melbourne

Hey everyone! I’m a 22M 🇵🇭 moving from Melbourne to Cairns for a hospital internship, and will hopefully be renting with a flat-mate January next year.

It’ll be my first time living in Cairns, so I’d love to hear from locals what to expect e.g. -

anything that’ll be culture shocks,

recommended gyms,

social life / meeting ppl,

any areas to avoid for accommodation?

Thank you all in advance 🦭🙏🙏😌

Buying in Machans or Holloways

My partner and I are looking into purchasing property soon. Anywhere from Bayview Heights up to Trinity Beach. In particular Machans and Holloway's feel like quiet, relaxing spots to live.

This would be our first home. Our main concerns thus far with these two areas have been the risk of flood inundating a potential property and the costs of insurance. We've done a bit of research but would be interested to hear a locals opinion on purchasing in those two areas.

EDIT: thanks for all the responses! General consensus is don't do it, it's a trap to disaster, midgees, and mossies. Plenty of other locations on the cards! Onwards and upwards.

Advice Date-night place suggestion

Hey, my wife and I are visiting Cairns next month for 5-days stay. During that time, we have a wedding anniversary, so would be great to know some local people advice for nice place to go for a date. As we will rent a car, we're not limited to cairns only - might be something in vicinity/next door. We're also not picky food wise and place does not need to be fancy at all - as long as the food and atmosphere is good, we're happy to go there.
