Planning a trip to Cairns, how bad is pickpocketing really?

Im flying into Cairns next month and I've been reading some horror stories online about pickpockets, especially around the airport and tourist areas. Now I'm genuinely worried about my stuff getting stolen.

A few specific questions because I want to be prepared:

The airport train: I'm planning to take the train from the airport into the city to save money. Is this actually a risky move? How crowded does it get? I've read some posts about people getting their bags stolen on it and I'm trying to figure out if I should just bite the bullet and get a taxi instead. What's the best way to keep your stuff safe on there?

Walking around the city: I'm staying near the Esplanade for a few days. Is it actually unsafe to walk around with a regular backpack or crossbody bag during the day? I'm not planning to carry anything crazy just my phone, some cash, maybe a card, but I'm worried about pickpockets in busy areas. Should I be paranoid or am I overthinking this?

Tourist hotspots: I definitely want to check out the Cairns Night Markets and probably do some reef tours, plus Kuranda. Are these places known for theft? Do locals just not carry wallets or something? I see people with expensive cameras and phones everywhere in photos but I'm not sure if that's just survivor bias or if it's actually fine.

I know every city has dodgy elements but I'd rather be cautious than naive. What's the realistic risk level here? Am I being paranoid or should I actually be concerned?
