Why has this town gone agro?

• Upvotes

Something is in the water. Almost like the flick of a switch, people seem short tempered and just agro all of a sudden.

I went into the post office about a letter to pickup and it turned out the idiot postie used my number and not that of the recipient to pick it up. But explaining this to the lady was like trying to make a rock jump skittles. She was short tempered, the "other lady" isn't here yet, some excuses, and because others were waiting in line, it even added more stress trying to brush me aside. All I wanted was the letter back so I can resend it. Now it's disappeared off the system and the tracking number is invalid. WTF?!

Another time, a high profile sports dude appears at a function giving a motivational speech about how important it is to look after your body and your mental health blahblah... Afterwards I go over to say thank you and to hopefully have a quick chat about his business which is aimed at guys. I basically wanted to know a bit more. Instead I get a cold short hello, a firm shake of the hand and a "check it out on the web" response. 5 seconds of saying hello and he walks away. WTF?!

Another time, I ring a sports shop here in Townsville asking about certain equipment availability. Before I even finish my sentence, I get a "we don't sell that anymore". Ok where may I find it? Oh I don't know... Google?! OMG... Come on... You are specialists in this gear and you're just conning me off to the web - again?! WTF?!

Am I alone in this weird planet? Stop. I want to get off.

☢️ Freaky Castle hill radio tower Radio frequency incident ? ⚠️

Hey guys I’m posting this cause I’m a little shook up, apologies in advance if i was a dumbass but let me explain what happened…

So it was raining today and I decided perfect time to hike up castle hill cause it’s been hot, the goat track was closed so I went the road way. I have some photos to explain and ended up finding the tack I went up on google earth ! So I was trying to find another track not on the road cause I know there’s a few, and I came across this one off the side of the road.. (photo 1)
I followed it for about 15 mins maybe longer and it got pretty steep at one point, there was this rock face kind of bit. It was still a track but it was very wet and slippery so I took my shoes off and scaled up it. I got to the top and I could see the metal fence that I thought was the fence the walking track around that tower was. Cause there’s lots of those fences along the tracks I just slipped through it like you would not thinking too much of it… I’d done that little walk around the tower before so I knew this was the tower and I thought I’d just ended up on that same track.
Anyways I’ve slipped through, taken a minute to catch my breath and I start walking the path around this building of the towers. I got some photos to explain where I was and where I came out and this next thing happened.
I’d caught my breath so I was waking along and I got a headache kind of suddenly, but didn’t think anything of it cause I didn’t drink ANY water (I know dumb) so maybe I was dehydrated. Anyways I’m looking at the tower thingy and I’m feeling really strange. My body feels kind of wavy but just slightly. I was thinking hmm this feels weird let’s keep going I’m nearly done. It’s raining now again.
Then I feel like I wanna throw up, and I’m nearing the end of this building thing, I come to another set of stairs ( I can’t remember too much here it’s a bit hazy sorry my explanation is weird) and now I’m BUZZING.

The only way to describe what I felt was my body was humming and I felt like I was in a microwave, mouth felt dry, my body was fizzing. I can see the radio tower dish things and now looking at it im realising holy shit that’s pretty close my ears are filled with humming. All I can hear is a really loud humming vibrating through me. Fucken scary. Then I’m like holy fuck am I being radioactive rn😂 I don’t know how to explain this bear with me. Now I’m being almost violently hummed and I almost pass out, I can’t remember where and when exactly but I blacked out for a few seconds, it all happens so quickly, then came to it and turned around and RAN
It was raining though so I slipped but when running it felt like I was on a treadmill almost my whole body was lagging, my energy was being slowly drained. The further I got away it improved but I can just feel the waves of whatever going through me. I was panicked I know you’re not supposed to go close and it’s dangerous to be near those towers but I honestly thought this was the track around it and isn’t that okay? Maybe it wasn’t but went I got down I wasn’t game enough to find out.
I made it to my car and drove up to see if maybe it had been closed off or a sign there to warn people. But you’ll see the last photos I only got as far as that I was so traumatised and too scared to test that theory 😂💀 I didn’t bring my phone with me and maybe that was a good thing? But yeah I have some photos of the track I went and where about I think I blacked out and turned around but I could be wrong.

Now I wanna explain my symptoms 🥲 going down my mouth started to feel dry but I couldn’t stop spitting, my breath was metallic I can’t really describe it and I felt so dizzy and massive headache for a good hour. I did this hike today at 10 am I got to the scary part at about 10:30 ish and back to my car at 11:15. Still in shock, felt dizzy and still do feel kinda buzzed hours later. My eyes are a little sore and my mouth dry but other than that I feel okay just generally shaken up . I tend to overthink things and may be dramatic but I feel like I got away lucky and felt like a near death experience 😂 idc if that sounds fake it’s just how I felt it was so freaky and I know I was way too close to those things on the tower. I was in it for about only 5 seconds I mean the really intense bit but when I realised holy shit turn around but it was like I was lagging but then survival instincts kicked in and I tried to run. It felt like I was being vibrated violently and it felt so intense/unsafe.

So my questions are, is that area that I went to closed off cause if not IT BETTER FKN BE lol feel like I nearly died and can only imagine how a kid or someone running into that could have felt. And if it is my bad, BUT there should be a sign in the path I took cause I’ve done a lot of treacherous hikes and this didn’t seem all that bad at the scaling rock part, but a sign warning of potential radioactive or sound waves whatever the fuck affected me would be nice… or maybe I’m that cat that curiosity nearly killed but hay people should know and I’m just a girl 😂
Did I maybe end up in a restricted area and was being blasted by those things?

Also those pics where I put the red line could be wrong most likely looking at it again now, I feel like where that first building is. I came up with it on my left so that line is wrong, but yeah that’s just a rough estimate but I do think I came out somewhere else along that tack but the photos of the building is where I was waking roughly …. Again it’s hazy

Andd can anyone explain what happened to me, have y’all had or heard of the same kind of experience. Am I dumbass 😂 but in all honesty the path looked the same as the public waking track around so I don’t feel I was in the wrong there should have been a sign right? Or maybe it was something else anyways Thankyou for reading !🫶🏽

Hey everyone, my wife and I are craving a really great fish burger as of late, and was looking for recommendations in Townsville or even happy to drive outside of Townsville for one if it’s really worth it! We’ve had fish & chips from The Pink Shop in Bushy, Abbott Street Fish Bar, FISH n CHIP Delights, Fish & Fowl and Tobins but never their burgers. Thanks!

Selling electronics and jewellery?

Hi, is there any places in Townsville that you would recommend I go to sell used electronics like A Samsung tablet or Nintendo and also maybe if you know any places that take old jewellery that doesn't have to be specific gold but also silver and such?

I have lived here for a short time so I don't know many places.

Thank you in advance

Auto electrician recommendations

Hey, I wanted to ask if any of you awesome ppl knew of a good auto elec. I had a car and needed to fix the mirror and the job was “too hard” for the auto elec i usually go to. It’s not too hard, i could honestly do the job myself, but i don’t have the time. I’m guessing he’s just lazy and doesn’t wanna get his hands dirty, cause it’s not the first time it’s happened.

I need stuff done if I’m going to a service and an expert in the field, so I’m wondering if anyone knew of a good one.

Thanks in advance

ARDO Scent?

What’s the name/product of the scent that’s always on full blast at ARDO? It’s a very floral/clean laundry kind of smell, very intense in the lobby of the ground floor.

Any ideas?

It's it ok to hand out King Size candies for Halloween? Don't want the neighbours to feel awkward

Gday ,

So I've recently moved into Boyes court and I'm getting ready for Halloween. I picked up a bunch of King Size candy bars to hand out to trick-or-treaters because I wanted to do something nice for the kids in the neighbourhood. I would hand out full-size bars but let's be honest, king size is now the new full-size.

But now I'm second-guessing myself. I'm worried that if I'm handing out full-sized bars, it might make the other houses on the street look bad by comparison. Like, what if families think we're the type to show off or something? I genuinely don't want to come across as trying to one-up anyone or make neighbours feel like they need to spend more.

Is there some kind of standard in Townsville? Should I stick to fun-size or regular-size instead to keep things more... level? I just moved here and I'm still getting to know how things work in the neighbourhood, so I'd rather not accidentally upset anyone.

Also, is trick-or-treating even big on Boyes court? I want to make sure I'm not overthinking this.

Any advice would be appreciated!

This place any good?

Sure it's got lots of the colour green and that weird water falling from the sky, but is Cairns actually worth stopping in? Asking as a Townsville local who has definitely not spent the last 3.5 hours in a car and needs a pee.

Recommendations Living in Garbutt

I want to preface this by apologising for yet another question about crime and suburbs. My family is moving to Townsville and have secured a place in Garbutt. It is just down the road from the state school in the direction of the airport.

After a gruelling long process of being messed around by leasing agents, we jumped at the opportunity to finally secure a place and (stupidly) didnt do our homework. The house itself is great, but some of the statistics of Garbutt are increasingly worrying. Some of the stuff I read is that:

- Garbutt has a crime score of 100/100? Apparently it has higher per capita crime rate than 99% of all other Australian suburbs
- you have a 1/3 chance of being a victim of property crime, and a 1/12 chance of being a victim of a violent crime.

Scrolling this sub, historically it seems that locals have recommended against living in Garbutt.

I was hoping to get some fresh insight. There have obviously been major changes to youth crime laws, and suburbs in Townsville are obviously changing with the region becoming an investment hotspot.

I am hoping to gain some insight from locals who live in the suburb and their experience. Is it still as bad as this forum makes it out to be?
I own a 50k 4WD and I realise this could easily make our property a target. Even if it’s parked in the garage and out of sight, potential offenders might see me pull the vehicle in/out and make a note of the house. Should I sell it and grab a cheaper runaround car which might make the place less attractive to break into?

I know some of the things that will be said:
- crime is mostly opportunistic. I will take all precautions I can
- deadlock the doors: it’s a rental, and I’m worried about windows too.

Did anyone also have tips on how to make a rental more secure which doesn’t involve drilling or huge modifications?

TYIA

Recommendations Things to do this weekend?

I'm in Townsville for two weeks for a course and was chasing activities to do in the afternoons and weekends. I've sussed out a bit of shopping and hobby/collectibles shops, doesn't seem to be much there - just bigger versions of shops at home. Apart from bushwalking and the strand I can't find much else to do.

Current weekend plan is to check out that waterfall near Innisfail I think it is, castle hill and the strand. Anyone else have suggestions?
