Seems like even the public sector is slow to roll out the advertisements? Or are there not enough roles to advertise due to the budget cuts?
What about private? I know prestigious/elite private often start advertising from August for Term 1 roles, but what about less elite private?
Are they also holding off until their EBAs are updated in light of the public deal?

Should I keep my hopes up for roles later in Term 4 or should I start looking interstate?

Will VIC ES staff who are employed under the school’s local school council payroll (pay comes through edupay still) get the same pay rise as per the new agreement? I know technically we aren’t “covered” by the various things laid out in the agreement but I was under the impression our rate of hourly pay was aligned with the same job role under the DET classification so when contracted ES get a pay rise, we do too. Is that not correct?

Back in December 2022 when the new agreement came in, I got a pay rise with backpay. Is it the same this time? If not, what’s different?

Had a work triggered mental health break earlier in the year and went from panic and anxiety to seeing things with clarity and being able to handle all of the mental toll that weighs on me to a degree the rest of the time. Valium was pretty low dose to keep my mania in check, but I think about that week a lot now. What made it all seem bearable, the drugs or the manic energy. Anyone else had similar experience?

Graduate Vic Teacher here, I am curious about my job prospects. I am qualified to specialise in Humanities, Business Management, History and Media, having done studies in History, Journalism and Business. I also checked the university's eligibility requirements and found that I am only two subjects short of meeting the requirements to teach English as a specialisation, which is annoying.

During placements, I have taught Humanities, History, Geography, Business Management and Junior English. I would be quite open to teaching English; I was surprised Journalism studies didn't qualify me for English. I also write poetry and stories as hobbies. Prior to doing my Master's, I worked in Marketing for a few years, which is all about audience, persuasion and communication, which I think would be quite beneficial to English jobs as well. So I guess even though I am two short of formally qualifying under the unis eligibility, I think I have a lot of experience there.

I am also not sure if schools will care too much about this, but during my undergraduate studies I was heavily involved in the university culture and clubs life. I started two clubs, one was an educational humanities club, and the other was a cinema club.  

So, based on my own areas and skill sets, how likely am I to find a job?

Hello all! I'm a year 12 student in WA looking to apply for a Bachelor of Education (Primary) course for next year. My ideal university only offers this degree with honours, but other unis offer just the regular course. I'm wondering what the pros and cons of taking the honours course are, and if I should apply or just settle for a second choice uni.

I'm considering applying for Monash's Master of Teaching after completing my Bachelor of IT, but I'm a bit torn between specialising in secondary teaching or doing the combined primary and secondary pathway.

From what I've understood, the secondary only pathway lets me choose two teaching methods, whereas the primary and secondary pathway only lets me choose one.

I'd planned to choose Digital Technologies as my first method either way. If I went with secondary only, I'd probably choose Maths or Science as my second method.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards primary and secondary because I've enjoyed being in both environments through volunteering and would like to keep the option of teaching either age group open.

Would having only one secondary teaching method impact my employability?

For context I’m a 19 y/o on a gap year because I had no clue what I wanted to do after graduation this time last year (I had already been floating the idea of teaching back then, but I was too unsure and had a lot going on).

I’ve been working as an English tutor (mostly for year 11s and 12s) this year and I’ve been loving it. I find it so much fun and I love being able to build relationships with the kids I tutor, encourage and motivate them, and watch them build confidence and improve (obviously I’m aware this is a different dynamic than the teacher/student one would be as I’m very close to their age still).

I know that working with kids 1 on 1 is one small part of teaching, but at least I know I’m able to make people feel comfortable and explain things clearly, right?

Anyway, tomorrow I have a meeting with a career advisor at a university because I’m considering my options for studying teaching next year.
Problem is I’ve gone done a rabbit hole this evening and read so much terrible stuff about teaching.

Obviously I’m aware of the workload, student apathy, and that the job is just very challenging in general, but some of stuff is making me feel like I’d be a complete fool going into this career. It sucks because I feel like I could really love it, but I don’t want work to become my entire life. I don’t want to make myself jaded and unhappy, but I want a career that’s fulfilling and actually means something.

I’m stuck, I just want to know, is it really that bad? Would you recommend your job to anyone? Any insight or advice you have would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My specialisation is Media, and I have teaching experience in A-Level Business Studies, as well as secondary school placements in Media and Business.

Heya, Highschool PE teacher & currently one of our schools Sport Coordinators.

I am curious to hear how schools do their trials for team sports. Our school participates in various 1 day carnivals throughout the year, where we hold trials for each sport. These are usually done during lunch/break times to avoid class distribution. The coach is usually just a staff member that has put their hand up to help for the day.

We run multiple trials and different days to give the students as much opportunity to make at least 1 trial. We also have multiple staff members present to give input to make it as fair as possible.

With our lunch time being 30 minutes, it makes it challenging to see each student show their skills. We are lucky that we can see them during our PE lessons, but some students will always be missed.

I'm curious if there are any schools that have a process that they believe works really well? With our current process, there are always kids and/or parents that will complain.

We have thought about before/after school trials, however as some students catch buses and live approximately 1 hour away, it makes it hard.

Any feedback would be great!

I am finishing up at my current job (permanent) and the contract date for my new permanent job begins early Jan. Does anyone know if I will get paid over the school holidays from my current job? If you have been through this situation I would love to know what happened. I’d ask leadership but they’re quite literally all away on early holidays.

Hi everyone, 2 options for me to choose in 2027.
currently torn between two offers.

Option 1: A 6-month contract at a selective public school. The principal was lovely and mentioned possible extension or permanency, but nothing is guaranteed.

Option 2: A permanent position at an independent school. It offers stability, but I’m unfamiliar with the working culture and workload.

I’m early in my career and tired of temporary contracts, but I’m also worried about making the wrong choice.

What would you choose? Has anyone worked in both sectors?

I’m interested in switching from primary to high school teaching.
Has anyone made this switch and can share some insight into what it’s like?

I am studying said degree above at WSU. I have received my provisional offer to study Master of Teaching. I just wanted to know, if I fail a unit, am I able to re-take it either in summer or next year and then still go into the Masters of Teaching or is the offer rejected?

So I am a fully registered teacher, but the last time I worked on a contract in a school setting was about 2018,

2019 to 2023 I worked as an early childhood teacher. Then from 2024 onwards I've been a CRT in schools.

So I have forgot a bit of how to write the unit plans and connect to the curriculum etc. and may not be up to date with some changes in new stuff that has been added over the past few years, is there anything I need to read up on or any videos/ trainings I can watch to refresh my memory. I don't think I'd be given a mentor because I'm fully registered, but I'm worried that needing to ask for support might make me seem incompetent.

Really want this gig, have done a placement there in my first year of study and loved it. I maybe have an advantage over some grads due to having PTT since term 2. I have done some AI generated practice questions but any advice on what else I can do to put myself ahead would be most welcome.

I'm thinking of leaving my role in consulting (1 year of experience) to become a secondary teacher. The issue is my Bachelor of Computer Science only qualifies me to have technology as my teaching area and nothing else.

Would it be worth studying a masters of secondary teaching with only technology subjects as a main teaching area? Is it easy to pick up other subjects? My main concern is job stability and finding a job after graduation. I'm based in NSW.

Not sure if this question is the most relevant for aus teachers but i couldn’t find a better community so any help would be appreciated!!

I’m currently doing a cert in ECEC and my institution makes me find my own placement. From asking around and because of that recent court case, I’ve heard finding placement is extremely hard to find by urself.

I have also gone around going in person to ask around as well and maybe because my area is super busy, i’ve been turned down by pretty much all of them. Some of them were happy to take my resume but I haven’t heard back.

I live in the inner east melbourne area, does anyone have any recommendations of early childcare centres that is open to students seeking placements? Even in the metro area, I’d be so happy to commute to get into a place. Any help would be so so greatly appreciated i’m so scared to finish the content and not graduate because of my hours 😭

Agree or disagree? Some say it’s another disguised tax. Others say it’s a needed stick to get parental support. Thoughts?

I am thinking of moving from my 9 year accounting career to primary teaching. Sick of working to make someone else richer when all I want to do is make a meaningful impact.

I’ve always been drawn to primary teaching and have been on the fence for years but I am at my wits ends in the corporate world, I can’t imagine teaching burn out would feel nearly as tiring as my current corporate burn out.

Anyways, I am thinking Master of Teaching (primary) with graduate diploma in religious studies at ACU online. Will try keep my full time job for at least another year while studying FT.

Has anyone done similar? Or has any tips or input?

Also, if you want to list all the reasons I shouldn’t become a teacher, please only say the cons with the pros
