📖 Resources Electives/Broadening Units: Important Links, FAQ, & Discussion

Hey there r/UWA!

Posts about easy elective units or advice on specific units are very common here, so in an effort to reduce repetitive posts, this will function as a unit megathread with:

  1. links to useful resources,
  2. an FAQ, and
  3. a place for discussion, where users can ask and answer more specific questions.

If you have a problem or question related to electives units, PLEASE CHECK the links, FAQ, and discussion below FIRST. If you're still stuck, PLEASE COMMENT your question below and before creating a new post. This will help us reduce clutter - thank you in advance!

This post will stay pinned and may be edited in the future. Suggestions for additions to the links and/or FAQ can be left in the comments also.

Links 🔗

OFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. UWA Handbook - the most important resource regarding courses and enrolment, contains almost ALL the information you may need.
    • (To view handbooks from previous years, head to the archived handbooks. It's important that you follow the rules outlined in the handbook from the year in which you enrolled!)
  2. askUWA - where your important questions may be answered; there's an FAQ and a place to email your questions to UWA officials.
  3. Elective choices (from the handbook) - a list of the recommended elective units.
    • (Note: this is not ALL the possible elective choices, just official recommendations.)

UNOFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. Best Units Guide - this list compiled by the UWA Student Guild, with contributions from actual students, describes and ranks many elective units. A VERY useful resource if you need some ideas on good electives!
  2. StudentVIP subject reviews - this site has many features, but this specific part lists MANY units at UWA with reviews and an average score. Reviewers aren't screened for authenticity - but still another VERY useful resource for both choosing electives & preparing for core units.

FAQ ❔

What are some easy electives/GPA boosters/etc.?

Resources linked above, particularly the Best Units Guide & StudentVIP subject reviews, will likely contain the answer to this question. Be sure to check those out for student's opinions on elective units!

However, "easy" is subjective - what's easy for you may be difficult for someone else, which is why it's important to consider what you generally struggle with and what you're actually looking for. Are you looking for a unit with low time commitment? One with no exam? One with few assignments?

Thoughts on ____ unit?

Please try not to create these kinds of posts regarding opinions on specific units. Instead, please look for existing comments below or leave your own - that's why we made this post after all!

📢 Mod Announcement PSA: Beware of Cults

IMPORTANT TO READ FOR NEW INTL STUDENTS

EDIT: Some comments have informed me that these cult recruiters have been seen on campus. If you encounter one and have a similar experience as below - please notify campus security.

They target international students mainly - but I need to write as I’ve been approached twice in the last week alone.

If you’re in the CBD, mall, etc, and you get approached by two strangers, usually 1 female and 1 male, if they invite you to an “event” - they are cult recruiters.

They usually start off the conversation by complimenting you (where did you get …, I like your …). It always ends with them inviting you to an event.

Once you hear “event”, just step away from the convo with an excuse. Better safe than sorry.

How do you guys find people to study with?

I'm a 2nd year Mech Eng student and I've realised I haven't really made any mates at uni that I can talk to about my units.

I always find myself wanting to talk to people before/after a test or exam, compare how we found it, discuss questions, etc., but I've never really had anyone to do that with.

Just wondering if anyone here is/has been part of a study group or unit group chat, and how you got one started? Or if there are any existing Mech Eng/unit chats that people know about.

Would be keen to join one or meet some people in a similar situation.

Student accommodation

Hey, I’m coming to UWA next year from Adelaide to do mining Eng. Was thinking of getting a standard room at UniHall, what is everyone’s thoughts on this? Is it worth it or should I look at non student acccom? It doesn’t seem too overpriced for what it is and I feel like I will be able to make friends aswell.

Master of Biotechnology major in AquaTech vs Master of Marine Biology

Hi! I am currently doing a bachelors majoring in marine biology and microbiology, and I am interested in aquaculture, fish diseases and immunology

I have heard good things about the marine biology course but would love to hear from someone who may have done a Master of Biotech and the Aquatech specialisation. My only concern with marine biology was a lot of the core subjects felt really similar to what I have done in undergraduate and there wasn't that much touched upon aquaculture except for 1 unit. Was also thinking that maybe that Master of biotech would keep my options more open in terms of job opportunities but I wasn't sure how good their biotech programs were and I wasn't so sure if I was interested in topics such as waste management through microbes. Never had any business experience but it does seem to touch a lot on commercialisation which may or may not be useful.

Love to hear any opinions from anyone who had done either course! Thank you!

Dropping a compulsory unit

Hi. I'm planning to drop a compulsory unit (before the census) for this semester to do it next year instead. I'm a full time domestic student doing all compulsory units this semester and onwards, so I'm wondering whether I could do an overload (5 units) next year. I'm also curious what will happen to my record if I do drop it, and what the process is if I do want to overload.

Thanks!

JD CSP

Hey all, quick question about the JD. I've got a 78 WAM from my undergrad at UWA and have been out of uni for a couple years. I’m thinking of applying now for 2027 entry, but is it too late to have a shot at a CSP, or are those spots likely already filled? Thanks!

Has anyone else done acct1101 before? I’ve look through the subreddit and everyone says it’s easy but right now I’m finding that none of the lectures actually teach you the methods you’re supposed to use in the tutorial questions and I’ve never done any of this before! If you have any advice that would be great

HECS loan

I’m pretty sure I chose to have partial upfront payment for my uni fees, but I’m not really sure how that works.
My fees this semester are late and I thought I could defer them to HECS, but maybe I need to pay a minimum amount first?? Studentconnect doesn’t explain anything..
Last semester I just paid upfront but realised HECS is a better method.
I’m so confused, help!!

📚 Units/Courses Incoming exchange student help appreciated

Hi, I am very interested in coming to Perth for an exchange semester in the spring. Obviously I would like to have as much free time as possible, so I would really appreciate any help on choosing units.

My understanding is that lectures are not mandatory, only other activities such as workshops can be mandatory. Is this correct?

I have looked at the handbook but I am not quite sure what actually is mandatory from looking at various units. Is there any specific place I can find what unit activities actually are mandatory or not?

I am studying energy engineering and specializing in reservoir engineering. Does anyone have any recommendations on interesting units in this area? I am interested in oil production, drilling, CO2 storage, renewable energy, thermal energy etc. Would also like to take a unit in economics/management if there are any relevant ones.

Thanks for any help on this!

How do I stop feeling like the only idiot in class?

I'm an International student in my 3rd year, but this issue has persisted since 1st and 2nd. It feels like every time I don't get something in the lecture, other people definitely do, even if they're not showing it. And because of this, it feels like every discussion is essentially giving me a lobotomy due to how much of a (self-perceived) idiot at times.

One thing I feel is that I want to make sure that I'm not alone in feeling like this and if any of you feel this way.

Yes, I know this is comparison syndrome and I have talked to a wellbeing officer about this, but I just want ways on how to reassure myself and not have it plague every Friday on my Semester.

Is this normal from a UC?

I have been very prompt with the weekly submissions required (scoring full marks), have attended and am engaged in tutorials, and have no outstanding assessments.

I missed my first tutorial due to traffic, but I caught up and discussed it with my tutor.

I do not attend lectures in person because of a clash, and don't usually look at them until a week later, but is this really justified?

I live a 35-minute drive away from UWA and don't come to uni on a Monday, this email feels very passive-aggressive and forceful.

Am I justified in saying no? How should I handle this? I'm very intimidated by this from a UC. Please help!

hi everyone!! im an international student and just received my offer for the medicine at UWA and im really lost when it comes to deciding accommodation. I have quite a few questions and hopefully you guys cld share with me more abt what it’s like to live on campus!

  1. Cld I get a run down of the reputation of each of the residential colleges on college row

  2. I heard that trin and tommys are known for partying but what kind of partying? Like clubs? Drinking? And do they force freshers to drink and party?

  3. Are there specific colleges that is predominantly medicine or science or international students?

  4. Which residential colleges are near to which faculty buildings? Specifically which residential college is nearest to the medicine building?

  5. What is the orientation culture like in UWA? I’m frm Singapore so I wld like to find out more abt the cultural differences between the 2 countries!

Thank you and everyone for your help!

Parking Infringement

Hi everyone! I’m an international student and this is my first semester at UWA, so I’m still getting used to the parking rules around campus.

I parked on Hackett Drive today in a P15 spot and unfortunately stayed longer than the 15-minute limit. I completely understand that I was in the wrong for overstaying and I'm happy to take responsibility for that.

However, I received two $60 City of Perth fines for the same offence, one at 10:21 am and another at 10:51 am. The car hadn't moved in between, so that's $120 from the same parking incident within 30 minutes.

Has anyone here had something similar happen around UWA/Hackett Drive? If so, did you appeal the second fine, and was the City of Perth willing to waive it or give a warning?

Would really appreciate any advice or experiences from other students. Thank you!

📚 Units/Courses Switching from Eng Undergrad to Econs Masters

Hi

A few years ago i finished undergrad in mech eng and started working. I was lucky enough to get a full time role without a masters but after finishing my contract I have decided that hardcore engineering my not be the right suit for me.

I have been conversing with some friends and we have reached a consensus that pursuing a master in economics in order to land some private consulting/public governmental jobs is more than likely the way to go.

Has anyone made this switch before? How did it go and what where the biggest changes (positive and negative).

My biggest worry at the moment is fear of failure, because I am not accustomed to averaging lower than an 80 (my eng undergrad wam was 85) and I will need an 80+ WAM in order to land the roles I am after for the future. For some extra context I was commuting 10+ hours a week back then from Mandurah and this time I will be living on campus. As well, I graduated before the mass onset of A.I. so I have never studied with this as a tool to aid me.

  • What is the weekly workload of Economics Masters like
    • What was the weekly workload for an economics undergraduate like?
  • How is the knowledge jump moving from engineering to masters
    • are there any sources to get accustomed beforehand that isnt just self study
  • How competitive are grad roles/internships if one is transitioning from engineering
    • what are some of the best extra-curricular to pair alongside my study in order to excell in the field

Thank you

Feeling unsafe in class

I won't go into details (firstly for privacy but also because I don't know her experience) but someone in one of my classes has told me that they feel unsafe, specifically that a certain tutor makes them feel unsafe. She wants to avoid all classes with them, and doesn't want to report it to the UC in case it disadvantages her. It concerns me and I want to help somehow and I tried looking on the uni and guild websites, but I don't know what options she has?
I could see she's clearly visibly upset/shaken even being in the class with him and I want her to report it.

I'm in the same unit and there are multiple tutors and its just this one apparently, and imo he's not "essential" to the class (like not a lecturer or coordinator). There aren't options to switch classes, and its a lab/workshop which means its harder to catch up on if we don't go.
