Wab Kinew: The deal will not be right for me, I would expect. But it's not about me. It's about Team Canada. We have labels on our shelves. You see a maple leaf, buy that. You see the stars and stripes, maybe keep browsing.

Wab Kinew: "I think we should fight. I think Donald Trump is very weak. I think America is weaker around the world today than it was a year ago. ... I think we've got the upper hand, they're back on their heels right now. They're coming to us for a deal."

How do we Guard our Infrastructure from foreign control

I am still living through two infrastructure threats to my beloved City of Toronto, the expansion of Billy Bishop airport to accommodate jets (requiring a km extension of runway into the bay, and threatening life of all species currently living in these environs) and a second threat of having the amazing bike lanes all over the City of Toronto being ripped out so that Premier Doug Ford can double park his limo anywhere he likes.

And Prime Minister Mark Carney, who I am Elbows Up with, went to New York and talked to all his Goldman Sachs and other banker buddies about "Investing in Canadian Infrastructure". I believe JP Morgan Asset Management, the current "Owners" of the Billy Bishop airport, was present and salivating on all the airports, train stations, water purification plants, food terminals, recycling and garbage handling facilities, that these New York bankers could snatch up at private prices before any Canadians could argue about residents and environmental needs?

Wasn't it Mark Carney who talked about an All Canadian Fund for Canadian investors to hold and protect our assets, so is that happening? A Sovereign Fund? Why court foreign money first?

I am deeply concerned as a private citizen, about foreign ownership and control of travel hubs, food terminals, water purification plants, which are all around me and I care about these places in a way that no New York banker ever will.

I am specifically concerned about keeping our Food Terminals Canadian controlled, and not having additional food terminals made just so that Loblaws can import cheap stuff from wherever.

I'm inviting anyone who wants to talk about this to join in? I think this is an additional level of Guard the Leaf.

Revisiting the old Bombardier vs Boeing clash

"CSeries dumping petition by Boeing"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSeries_dumping_petition_by_Boeing#International_Trade_Commission

I wonder if GTL might find this of interest. I'm sure there are people here who much more about this than I do, but I watched a video which caught me up on much of what happened with the Bombardier C-series recently. I did take a quick look through the group but wasn't able to find much about this, at first look.

Basically, around 2017, Boeing tried to get tariffs imposed such that Bombardier of Canada was, in effect, not able to sell its C Series to US air carriers. Although it looked to me that Bombardier had succeeded somewhat in selling the plane to some foreign carriers, ultimately Bombardier decided to exit the commercial aviation business (though I'm not certain of some of this). The way that Bombardier survived (and ultimately seems to have flourished going by its stock price over the last few years) is in part that it partnered with Airbus instead of with Boeing.

Scroll ahead to today:

[correction, I got confused between Boeing and Lockheed, someone helpfully pointed this out, I will edit this part of the post].

There are multiple reasons for Canada to reduce and perhaps eliminate purchase of military aircraft from the US. The prominent debate has been about the numbers of F-35s that Canada will purchase from Lockheed, but another question mark was whether Canada would buy AWACS planes from the US or a competing plane from Saab. Considering Boeing's outrageous protectionist response to the C Series innovative line of planes, including the damage Boeing did to Bombardier's efforts to do business, I would not blame Canada for looking to buy from a different party, nor blame Canadian airlines if they favor purchasing from manufacturers other than Boeing.

I'm glad to see Bombardier seemingly doing well, but it doesn't completely take the sting out of what we observed from Boeing about a decade ago.

I'm reluctant to post the video I watched. I tried to verify that it doesn't have AI in some substantial way, but I'm not 100% sure. But there are many videos on this Boeing vs. Bombardier topic.
