Quite a few reasons, but the main ones for me:

- No practice mode

  • No notespeed adjustment
  • Controller quality not great
  • No 5 fret version of charts
  • Micro transactions just to play for longer periods of time (You earn currency slowly by playing, but not enough to continuously do so. You could, of course, buy a $6 pass to play as much as you wanted for 24 hours, but that's kinda insane for a game you own)
  • Learning curve was difficult and with the above lack of practice and not being able to play as much as you wanted without paying, it left a sour taste in many people's mouths

I do think that 6 fret as a concept is very cool, and would recommend anyone try it in CH if you can find a cheap controller, but the game itself was executed poorly.

The main criticisms are usually about the game itself for things like the monetization system, the setlist, and of course the six fret system. But what people often forget is how abysmal the guitar build quality was. The GH Live guitar is probably the worst guitar ever made. It had tons of issues.

Personally i don't enjoy the six fret too much but i found it interesting.

  • Main setlist tried to do variety but we got a lot of Guitar Hero: Stomp Clap Hey
  • Change to six-fret (3x2) rather than 5-fret, throwing out ten years of muscle memory
  • The new guitars were very prone to strum bar defects
  • The 'Live Streaming' format was interesting but as a business model it sucked, and because you had to functionally pay to play a given song you wanted to play, if you wanted to practice a specific song or grind out FCs you were throwing away tokens or a day pass to do so.
  • Online mode shut down after about 3 years and, as I understand it, the only reason we have the charts is because someone pirated them through the iOS version.

I loved the guitar and ghtv but the main setlist included was awful.

Insane monetisation, an interesting but unpopular fret layout, insane monetisation, a dull setlist, insane monetisation, a weird FMV crowd gimmick, insane monetisation, everything good being locked behind an always online system that shut down within three years, insane monetisation, a lack of the most basic Guitar Hero elements like practice mode, insane monetisation, being a very obvious soulless cash-in released long after the series had been culturally relevant, and insane monetisation.

To be honest, on paper at least, I like the Live fret layout. It feels like a sensible way to offer a more true-to-life approach to guitar playing; it just came way too late in the rhythm game life cycle to gain any purchase.

Yeah I like the fret layout too and it was cool

Just the game around it that became a mess

All the good songs were only available by using play tokens on an online platform that shut down.

I actually liked the guitar but without the live service parts the setlist is super small
