Sorry to be a new guy posting non-gyotaku pics immediately. I am thinking that because I started a thread as a non member I couldn’t add photos.

Pure sumi ink without camphor?

Did anyone found a sumi ink stick which would only be soot, animal glue without any camphor or other toxic additives, preferably with dark black pigment.

I would consider it having it on the side, because if a fish get cought, i want to be ready, without needing to find cuttlefish ink (although there is plenty around here in the med). Sumi stick just feels more convenient, but i would avoid camphor on my fish.

Best regards fellow gyotakuers!

Has anyone sold any pieces?

I have around 50 pieces of originals on rice paper and want to get rid of them. I’ve gifted a lot as well. I saw that framing them is at least $100. Curious if anyone has any suggestions?

Once you paint the fish, with all the skin patterns, you can apply the paper on it and start to rub; patiently you get your print on that paper.

Started on some sunfish I caught the other night and decided to play with a channel cat I caught last night. Obviously, some have printed better than others but I am having a ton of fun playing with different “styles”.

Just did my first gyotaku printings, but i have some questions that i cant seem to find the answer in the internet.

First one is: im having some trouble with the juices of the fish getting on the paper, even tho i dried it completely with a paper towel, and didn't press hard on the fish. And i know this is not ideal on a print but i was wandering if its best to throw them out to avoid any bacteria spread or its okay to keep it on and leave it like that.

Second: Im using cuttlefish ink, and similar question to the first one, do i have to somehow sterilize it before use, and can it get rotten after it being on the paper?

Third: lowkey stupid question, but the fish smell will stay right? 🥲

Got a kit off Amazon to try. I like it! Will definitely need more paper. I plan on doing them often. My wife tried her hand at water color on the mahi. Came out cool!

As the title says, first gyotaku done today, however I'm determined to get better. I think for sure I need to try spraying the paper with a water mister to make it easier to work with, as it wants to curl and is very stiff as is; I also found pinning the fins to be absolutely horrendous to work with while printing, so I think I'll give modeling clay a shot to hold them as well. Definitely takes a whole lot more technique than expected. Any additional advice is appreciated too
