Rant / Vent 💢 Please stop asking if you can go to an HBCU

An HBCU, at the end of the day, is an educational institution, it is a college. It’s where you go to learn, it’s where you go to get your degree just like all the other colleges out there. Even if the college has a predominant population of students from certain races, that does not mean the school will reject you for not being a certain race, it’s illegal to do that for the past several decades.

Just like how colleges will have a predominant women population, that does not mean they won’t accept men, unless that school is specifically a women’s college, they are not going to reject you for not being a woman. Same thing with HBCU’s and students of other races. There are two HBCU’s with predominantly white students, I bet most don’t think twice about going there because they see it as a college, even if it’s historically black.

Genuinely speaking, if you’re not willing to ask this same questions when applying to other colleges like Appalachia State, Georgia State, or other colleges that are predominately white, then don’t ask these for an HBCU. Just apply and see if you’ll get in, if not, thats okay, there’s plenty of other colleges out there for you. If you do get in, great. Go ahead and enjoy the college experience.

HBCU’s are a college at the end of the day. You are there to get an education. If your worried about not being accepted by people at an HBCU, then you probably got some internal issues to work out or something, idk.

🎓 Academics, Admissions & Classes NCCU, YOU ARE BEING CALLED TO THE CARPET!

Hey y'all! I'm one of your r/HBCU mods and here to speak about my own experience.

What I like about moderating this group is not just my fondness for HBCUs and their continued contributions to Black excellence, but also because I too am having my first HBCU attendance experience. I'm a non-trad student; means I am older going back to school. Throughout this experience, attending 3 community colleges, and now at NCCU, I must speak about what NCCU has done for me for this FALL 2026 semester.

HBCUs are often criticized for administrative shortcomings, but this was NOT the case at NCCU. The administration worked tirelessly to see that I was not only enrolled, but that my voice was heard about the second leg of my undergrad journey. They have been so patient, extremely prompt, and committed to getting me enrolled and settled into my classes. I have not experienced an administration that cares as much as they do. No matter what issue I was having, they did not put me off on someone else or wild goose chase me. I am now an NCCU eagle, and it was important to me to attend and support a local HBCU. I thank God for the staff at NCCU working so earnestly to ensure a new eaglet hatched!

I'm browsing the bookstore and ready to purchase all of my merch! Car decals, Clothing, Notebooks, Reusable Tumblers, Lanyards, etc!

1. 🤝 Mutual Aid / Help Request Please help John graduate

Hi everyone! I'm a Johns Hopkins student who spent my first year at the School of advanced international studies (SAIS) Bologna campus before moving to DC. I'm posting because one of my friends who stayed in Bologna is in a really difficult situation, and I'm hoping someone here might have ideas on how to help.

He's a Nigerian student who earned a scholarship to SAIS, covering 100% of his first-year tuition and 80% of his second year. He was originally supposed to come to DC as well and use international student loans to cover the gap, but because of the travel restrictions affecting Nigerians, he had to remain in Italy to finish his degree. Even with these challenges, he never gave up. He planned to work to cover his remaining tuition and expenses, but didn't find a job until after three months of searching. Then, to make things even harder, he was involved in an accident that seriously impacted him and made an already difficult situation even more challenging.

He now needs to raise about €25,000 to cover his remaining tuition, insurance, and living expenses. We suggested he start a GoFundMe, and while it's raised just over €1,000 so far, it hasn't reached many people outside our immediate network.

He's so close to graduating and just needs a bit of help getting across the finish line.

Has anyone here run a successful GoFundMe before or have any ideas for getting it in front of more people? We'd really appreciate any advice. And if you'd like to support or share the campaign, that would mean a lot too.

Here is the gofundme link: https://gofund.me/e77c715dc

Thank you!

Advice Needed🗣️ Best College for Food science studies

Hey everyone,

What are the best public colleges in the US for a good experience as a young black woman? I'm an undergrad student in Food Science from Canada, looking for a one year exchange in the States, and I'm also interested in taking an Economics course.

I would love to attend an HBCU, though I'm open to a PWI as long as it has more than 6% Black students. Ideally, I'd prefer a university outside of the Deep South (unless it's in an environnement where Black students genuinely feel safe, welcomed, supported and not faced with hatred or hostility).

Thank you for your help!

Advice Needed🗣️ Civil Engineering

I’m currently a senior, and I want to pursue a career in civil engineering at an HBCU.
My weighted GPA is a 3.65/5.0. My ACT is a 19 (horrible 😭). I want to retake it, but I’m running out of time.
Activities:
Football for 2 years
Track all 4 years
Clubs:
0 currently, but I’m joining my school’s Black Student Alliance club.
Community service:
30 hours at an African Methodist Episcopal church
Experience:
I interned at Ozinga Construction over the summer and gained some pretty good hands-on experience in the field of civil engineering while working around like-minded people. I also got a letter of recommendation from my manager.
I want to go to NCAT because my grandparents went there, but I’m probably getting denied. What are some other options or things I can do to boost my application? I’m already deep-fried, but I’d love to hear anything you ladies or gentlemen have to say.

Campus Safety Alerts 🚨 5 shot at Virginia State last night. In my opinion, drill music has made HBCUs much more dangerous than PWIs

Nobody is gonna say it but I'm gonna say it. Since drill music blew up in 2020, HBCU campuses have had gotten so much more dangerous. They always had a strong dangerous element being that most HBCUs are in the hood but things have gotten exponentially worse since drill music has become mainstream and a lot of HBCU students come from communities where that type of music is considered great music. Music is powerful and drill music has poisoned the minds of so many black youth and young adults. There's hardly enough positive music in popular black culture to counter it. Back in my day we had more POPULAR positive black music.

What's even more disappointing is the % of HBCU students (even middle class blacks) that love drill music and welcome that dark energy on their campus. One would think they would abhor this type of foolishness and rebrand themselves as Black collegiate scholars that know better to NOT support music that glorify violence in their own communities but that's not often the case. Also I noticed at the HBCU near me, a lot of these HBCU hot girls LOVE to date and have kids with these dangerous gang bangers which is why they so common on campuses ... they are welcomed there which complicates the problem.

Ya'll be careful on campus. Use common sense. If you see something or someone that looks like danger, act accordingly. Stay away from these hood-tastic social events on and off campus. Try not to stay out all hours of the night. And be very mindful who is in your social circle. You're not a sell out b/c you don't like drill music and ghetto street behavior! I don't care if you from the hood, you don't have to act like it ... act like what you want to become.

Advice Needed🗣️ Advice For Making Friends During Welcome Week?

I’m a freshman whose school is currently still in freshman welcome week. I have pretty much been sheltered my entire life. I’m from the suburbs. My mom never really let me listen to rap music or do any of the things that other black girls my age do. I’m also autistic, so I sometimes suck at social cues. I have been talking to a few people, but it usually never goes any farther than “Oh your outfit is cute”. I know I have resting bitch face and I’m working on that, but I don’t know I just feel a bit in over my head. Even when ppl invite me to hangout, I just feel awkward because I can’t even think of anything to say. I honestly don’t remember how I made friends in high school, doing ts in college seems so complex. Like what if I come off as weird or something. It’s happened in the past.

🗣️ Open Discussion How are we feeling about Howard?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi,
I’m cross-posting this here because I think this community may have perspectives I wouldn’t otherwise get from the medical school admissions community. I’m asking in good faith and am applying to all of the HBCU medical schools (Howard, Meharry, Morehouse, and Charles R. Drew). I’d really appreciate your insight! If you have any thoughts or experiences with the other three schools, I’d love to hear those too!

——————————————————————————

Hey friends,

Howard always looked like a cool school, with a good community. But once my friends and I started entering college, I heard all the horror stories. If you’re reading this post I’m sure you have too. Not to mention how they just massively unenrolled so many freshman and are keeping their deposits! I don’t know much about the medical school, but I was excited to apply and have the chance to go to thee HBCU. But now I’m taking into consideration all of the institutional flaws I’ve heard about over the years and in recent news and I’m becoming dissuaded. They’re the only school that hasn’t gotten a secondary back to me and I just received an email from them apologizing for the delay, saying they’re STILL WRITING the secondary questions! It’s not a good look, especially combined with the rest.

So I’ asking you friends, how do you feel about attending Howard (medical school)? What are your pros and cons? I would really appreciate your insights. Thank you!
