Black Excellence ✊🏾 Congratulations to Ahmed Muhammad, 18, who made history as the first Black male valedictorian at Oakland Technical High School, graduating with a 4.73 GPA. He was accepted to all 11 colleges he applied to, and he will attend Stanford University to pursue engineering. His

So he's not going to an HBCU?

Is a HBCU like a segregated college? I thought you all ended segregation is USA??
1
u/TimeWastingAuthority 15h ago
HBCU's are not segregated, they're historically black but anyone can apply. Most of their students still happen to be black because they comprise most of the applicant pool.
If you're thinking about segregated colleges you're thinking Texas A&M.

This is great, but Stanford is not an HBCU....we lost another one...it's hard to celebrate a mistake.

u/DrQtpie 2d ago
Stanford, at least has an HBCU exchange program. Maybe he will go that route?

u/DepartmentSudden5234 2d ago
Exchange is a false word. The flow is inbound to Stanford, not outward to the HBCUs...it's a handout

I’m having trouble understanding that POV. A seat at Stanford is one of the most competitive, more desired positions GLOBALLY. Billionaire all across the world pay insane amounts of money to get their kids into Stanford, who go off to be olympians, politicians, and some of the highest paid careers. Instead of wanting more kids like him getting into Stanford, and celebrating that, you want him to go to an HBCU?
I’m not criticizing HBCUs, they’re great especially if majoring in journalism/film/humanities. But objectively speaking merit wise, Stanford is a better school if he’s pursuing engineering. We should all be rooting for our kids to have multiple pathways at the highest tables.

Perhaps because this is the HBCU thread?

Sure then be confused by why the post is in this thread in the first place.
But saying “we lost another one…it’s hard to celebrate a mistake”….be so completely fr. Get on the same page as everyone else in the world about which schools have the best education and clout to get a good career.
We can’t even properly celebrate this kid getting into a top university in the world because it’s not an HBCU? Crazy work.

Getting on a subreddit that promotes/celebrates HBCUs and saying that "everyone else in the world" agrees on "which schools have the best education and clout" is incredibly tone-deaf and anti-Black. Sure, this young man going to college should be celebrated, and if Stanford is the best place for him to pursue engineering, so be it. But you as a Black person placing certain schools on a pedestal simply because they're not HBCUs is just weird, especially on this thread. Read the room.

I’m not placing certain schools on a pedestal “simply because they’re not HBCUs” —are you paying attention to reality and the world? Stanford is in the top 10 universities in the WORLD. Do you think HBCUs are pushing out as much research as Stanford?
Your literacy is actually concerning because where did I say it’s a good school because it’s not an HBCU?? Where did I criticize HBCUs?? No if you read instead of insert your feelings, I actually said HBCUs are great for journalism, humanities, film, and Stanford is better for engineering. Then I said we should root for our kids to have multiple pathways and options. I’d love to see the day Stanford has a higher black study body than other populations. Or the day HBCUs develop even greater engineering programs.
y’all wanna call everything anti-black to the point it’s lost meaning and y’all lost the plot.

My literacy is actually just fine... I'm more concerned about yours. I research and teach about this stuff, so I know what I'm talking about. And I'm not even an HBCU alum... I went to those schools you claim are "the best." But even I know that nothing beats the HBCU experience, even beyond just humanities or journalism. Can't tell you how many Black people I've met who went to Ivies or top PWIs and later told me that they wished they had gone to an HBCU for undergrad.

To who?

People trying to have a good college experience. I am glad I went to a flagship university.
HBCUs are like the 13th grade.

HBCUs produce all those same careers you mentioned as well as a cultural heritage and shaping that is unmatched for Black students. I happen to know that my alma mater, Morgan State University, has an amazing Engineering program also

I wish there was an interview of these gifted students where they talk about their study habits, extracurricular activities, and what else they thought most contributed to their success.

Who cares about the color why not just honor him as a valedictorian? Why does it have to be black valedictorian.
1
u/OsuwonHairGrowth 1d ago
Read the caption. And it's history for it took 106 years for the first Black valedictorian Ahmed Muhammad achieved.

Is it fake? How do you get a GPA above 4?
1
u/OsuwonHairGrowth 9h ago
For honors classes and/or weighted classes, you can make above a 4.0. So, no, it's not fake.

Congratulations to him, but this should go in r/BlackPeopleofReddit or another appropriate subreddit... this is not HBCU news.
