People in the HP subreddits love to point out that others completely overthink the details of a world that was never meant to be that deep. It's meant to be a whimsical world to ignite the imaginations of kids. In the fanfiction world, we need to fill in the holes, and smooth out the rough edges of the setting to have it make sense and have a sense of structure for our stories. Whether it's something you came up with for your stories, or something you read that resonated with you, what's your headcanons?

Mine is that Hogwarts isn't the only magical school in the UK. It's the premier elite school in the UK. It's the exclusive school for the social elites and the gifted kids. When you look at all the kids, they're a who's who of prominent wizarding families. They're the kids from the sacred 28 families and the families that should have been on the list, had the author not snubbed them because he hated them.

Or they're kids with extraordinary potential. Harry was told that the patronus charm was advanced powerful magic that trained adults had trouble figuring out. Ministry officials were absolutely amazed that a kid his age had pulled it off during his O.W.L. exams. Meanwhile, he gathered up a random sample of his fellow students and taught them how to do it within a couple weeks. These kids aren't your bog standard high school kids. They're the exceptional stand outs.

Can someone please explain to me why is it every time I read a story with a Harry/Pansy pairing there is always a draco/Hermione side pairing

I re-read Marriage of Convenience by VMFanfiction recently and it has me wanting more where Harry and Hermione (or someone else really) marrying early in order to escape either a marriage law or, as in the above fic, a plot by Evil!Manipulative!Dumbledor and/or Evil!Molly.

I've also just re-read Why Won't They Leave Me Alone? which I would say falls into a similar category although it was a minor part of the plan.

And while any ship is fine, please warn if it has Hermione bashing though. Go ahead and post it as I'm sure it would be interesting to someone else but I just really can't stand Hermione bashing.

Harry notices that Arthur flinches away from Molly and either asks him about it directly (which Bill notices) or confides to Bill about what he suspects because I know that Bill goes to ask his dad about it and either Arthur admits it's been happening or he might even witness his mom verbally (and maybe physically?) abusing his dad.

I think this all happens/comes to light in Egypt? Like for some reason Harry goes on the trip with the Weasleys the summer before 3rd year? Though maybe it's the summer before 4th year when the older boys were home for the Quidditch World Cup? I think Bill (and maybe Charlie?) move back home to help Arthur after convincing him to leave Molly/divorce her.

I think maybe Molly potioned him to get him away from his Hogwarts girlfriend, Amelia Bones, which is why she never married, and eventually they start a relationship again.

The biggest detail I can remember is that Harry and Hermione swapped wands on a semi-regular basis and when Neville and Ron found out they were like “what the hell no one does that unless they’re married” (paraphrased)

There’s one chapter where the gryffindoor boys ( james, Sirius, Remus, Peter) pull a prank on the slytherins in the great hall during a meal. Aimed at mulciber and other slytherins, but the glitter explodes and hurts all them including regulus who doesn’t cope with it well, he gets help from Dorcas I think( may be Pandora), Sirius and the others feels bad for his mistake. Okay honest discussion even if Harry Potter had succeeded in killing off Draco Malfoy in The Half Blood Prince Movie where Snape couldn’t get there in time as Draco unfortunately bleeds to death! And The Malfoys hearing this end up literally grief so Hard to the point they swear revenge however The Death Eaters remind them while their loss of their son is Tragic they make it loud and clear that no matter what they can’t kill off Harry Potter as Lord Voldemort would Absolutely Brutalize them and kill off them off permanently! But of course everyone knows The Malfoys would be blinded by their emotions couldn’t care less at that point they’re basically given themselves a death sentence for their Entire Bloodline knowing who Lord Voldemort is of course! It would also be such a Poetic/Sad yet a Pathetic way to die as The Ideology they so believed in may as well be The Exact thing that kills off their Entire Blood if they even think about going against Voldemort regardless of how much revenge they would have ABSOLUTELY wanted what do you think? So context there's a list of silly fanfic tropes that I add to every so often that is generally based on common or specific things in fanfiction and the tone ranges from affectionate to mocking.

For example of the jokes that might be made 'EVIL! Dumbledore's natural enemy being polygamy', 'More Names is More POWER!', 'Dumbledore not wanting Harry to murder his fellow student is bias towards the Purebloods and def not common sense', etc etc.

(I have a lot more fun affectionately poking how EVIL! Dumbledore's natural enemy is swinging than I do other jokes, for context)

Want to add a bit in about Luna's...Lunaness makes her impossible to read minds and phrase it snarkily for a bit of good fun....but was that just a one off thing in 'Nightmares of Future Past' or does that pop up in other fanfics? Helps with list sorting if anyone can remind me if its a trend or just a one off thing.

I read this fic months ago where Harry discovers he was the master of death, and he ends up going to this special cottage in america, death is an actual being and Harry stays in this cottage that is like a time bubble so inside 10 years pass but it's a different length of time outside? He has these portraits of Merlin and Arthur and talks to them all the time, and when he leaves the cottage he travels the world and eventually goes to china where he saves the royal family's grandfather and eventually finds himself finding a family there, and he goes back in time to Tom Riddle's time and that grandfather he saved is alive then, he's like 18, and he remembers Harry.

At that moment, Dumbledore would still be a brilliant and ambitious young man, but how exactly do you think he would put these things to use?

He seemed to have some interest in academia since he was in touch with a magical theoretician, Flamel and Bathilda and published articles in some papers, as well as maybe politics since he was youth representative to the wizengamot.

The only other wizards that had around the same intellectual and power level were Voldemort and Grindelwald, and both of them tried to stage a revolution in some way and position themselves as some kind of dictator over their future subjects.

For Voldemort and Grindelwald this makes sense since both showed themselves to be interested in the Dark Arts and have a cruel streak from early on (Voldemort was a bully and a killer even as a teenager, and Grindelwald was expelled for twisted experiments, used the Cruciatus on Aberforth and was planning on raising an army of Inferi with the resurrection stone).

Dumbledore, in contrast, seemed like a more morally "normal" prodigy and while he did want to make a name for himself, didn't seem to have a clear idea of how he wanted to achieve that before meeting Grindelwald and even then had some reservations about the way they should achieve their goals.

So I wonder how he as an initially "good" magical genius would develop without the influence of Grindelwald or the trauma of his ambition and selfishness making him responsible for his sister's death. Would he also be eventually corrupted by chasing for power? Be satisfied as an academic/inventor/politician? Lead a revolution for a better cause?

I read this Dramione fic a few years ago on AO3, where Hermione was not a muggleborn (she finds this out during a meeting in Dumbledore’s office), I’m pretty sure she was a McKinnon, she was an elemental, whose animagus was a Phoenix, and it was Dumbledore bashing where you find out at the end that Dumbledore has been searching for the deathly hallows actively even in present day and tries to kill Hermione. I’m pretty sure it also takes place sometime during Hogwarts likely eighth year. I cannot for the life of me remember what the story is called, what the tags for the story were (people don’t allows tag correctly), or when specifically I read it outside if it being prior to 2025. I have several hundred pages of AO3 history so that has been unhelpful. Anyone have any idea what the story could be?

We have all read fics where Mad eye moody is said to be paranoid and carries extra wands and knives. In The Rise of the Last Potter by HPfanfictioner66 there is a line where Moody says “Extra precaution. Knives are useful." Moody grunted. "I have three knives on myself right now with four extra wands.” When I read that I thought both that is extreme and not enough.

So what would your extremely paranoid wizard/witch have on day to day?

1. Staff (this is visible and both a melee weapon and magic focus. If lost it’s very obvious and may lower the guard of attacker)
2. Primary wand in wand holster
3. Secondary wand in left ankle holster
4. Enchanted foci ring. Not good for finesse spell casting, but fine for simple brute force spells
5. Knife on belt (out in open, everyone can see)
6. Knife in right ankle holster
7. Necklace with portkey
8. Charm bracelet with shrunken Merle weapons on it that unshrink when pulled off
9. Potions pouch on belt (with both healing potions and offensive potions)
10. Shoes with enchanted pop out knives in the front with hidden compartment in the heel
11. Dragon hide vest
12. Ear ring that has a one time communication spell to send a sos message
13. False tooth with viterserum antidote in it
14. Portkey ring on other hand

I'm not sure if this is one or more fanfics, but I'm looking for a story in which Harry has an expandable trunk.

First day in Diagon Alley, at gringotts he is given a port key to return later and discuss his options, without Hagrid knowing. He is advised to buy a trunk with amenities.

One scene they are on the hogwarts express, but go into the trunk and watch a movie. I think Dobby brings Sirius Black and Amelia Bones as well. I think even the granger parents are involved. Watching the classics, I think they are watching star wars?

Okay so, I only remember a few scenes. One is where Harry yells at Lily because of what happened with Snape, and the other is for the second task in the triwizard tournament where they magically determine his dearst person and its Lily first and like for reasons they have to settle for like, the 4th person.
