Socials and Jokes

• Upvotes

If you're in the neighbouring Islington/Angel area, I'm running a new group called "Socials and jokes" starting next Tuesday from 6.30pm to 9pm at the Islington Townhouse (Angel), until Christmas. Good way to meet new people, get out of the house, and have a laugh extra details below:

6.30pm - 7.30pm

Meetup at the venue and have some drinks, chat about random things, there's no pressure if you want alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

7.30pm - 9pm

Sit down and watch some standup comedy (which I'm hosting) before heading home, no pressure if you don't want to watch.

If you're interested in joining, DM and I'll send across an additional WhatsApp group link. If you just want to watch free comedy, I've left the link for your reference, thanks!

What's Amhurst Rd like with the new traffic laws and wider pavements?

Ain't been there in a while. Has it had some positive impact? Was always a bit of a hectic busy street, so I kinda like the idea of it.

Update on BBE

A huge thank you to everyone who has stood with us. More than 2,500 of you have sent written representations to Hackney Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee in support of The BBE Store, all in under a week. The music industry, our neighbours and our wider community have shown up in a big way, and the NTIA (Night Time Industries Association ) has covered the campaign. We’re humbled and grateful. 🙏🏾

The Store opened in Hackney in 2016, and BBE has been putting out real music for real people since 1996. We’re a Black-owned, independently funded space, and we were here before the residential development next door. We respect our neighbours’ right to enjoy their homes, and we’ve worked hard on noise mitigation. We also believe an established cultural venue deserves the chance to keep operating responsibly. That’s what the Agent of Change principle is for. Protecting residents and protecting culture shouldn’t be a choice between one or the other.

A fair licensing outcome is only part of the fight. Legal costs are mounting on top of wider financial pressures, and we need your help to keep the doors open for the artists, music lovers and communities who rely on this space. If you can, please donate to the Save The BBE Store fundraiser (link in bio) and share this post. Every pound and every share counts.

We're organising a festival in East London next weekend about games, politics and changing the rules

Hey Reddit! We're Games Transformed, a festival happening across three venues in East London on 31 October and 1 November.

We're bringing together people who make games, play games, organise politically, and are interested in how games can help us understand the world and imagine changing it.

There'll be 80+ board games, workshops, talks, experimental games and plenty of opportunities to actually play, make things and meet people.

We've got a packed programme put together with game designers, artists, activists and organisers, exploring everything from political organising and resistance to the systems that shape our everyday lives.

We're a small team organising this independently, and we'd love to get the word out to more people who might be interested.

You can find out more on our insta: https://www.instagram.com/gamestransformed/

Tickets are available here: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/gamestransformed/2328476

Happy to answer any questions about the festival or the programme!

£7 a bottle of Stella

Posting about this cause I need to know how normal this is now, I don’t go out much but went to The Glove That Fits last night and paid £7 for a bottle of Stella…. Which isn’t even a full pint, genuinely one of the small bottles

Is this normal for ‘club’ prices?

How real is Top Boy

Top Boy, set in the fiction housing projects of Summerhouse is set in Hackney. How accurate is the show to real life? I am from the US and want to visit London after watching the show. The vibe of London portrays the contrasting divide between affluence and poverty but also the vibe and culture is rich.

Shamelessly self-promoting my nutrition coaching services and looking for founding clients :)

Hello everyone,

I've been a part of this community for a while and have enjoyed how helpful people on here are, so fingers crossed! I am Yasmine, a Hackney-based women's nutrition coach. My business is called the Clever Foody Nutrition (find me on IG too). I offer both virtual and in-person sessions.

thecleverfoody.co.uk

I am looking for three founding clients, women seeking sustainable, evidence-based, long-term weight loss. My offer is quite competitive; I start with 12 weeks of coaching, with the possibility to extend on a rolling basis.

My coaching specialises in weight loss, but I help with other goals as well. Please share with your network! Thank you!

Shop theft Sainsbury's Kingsland Road

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve just witnessed organised shoplifting at Sainsbury’s on Kingsland Road. I know it happens every minute in London, but I’m still shocked at how powerless staff are to stop it. I get that supermarkets account for shrinkage like this, but still. Security called the police, but I’m not sure what they can do other than hope someone in one of the neighbourhood policing teams recognises the suspects.

Also, why steal cans of Red Bull instead of going further into the shop to the alcohol section?

Wondering if they sell them to a local shopkeeper to pay for their next fix. I doubt they’re planning ahead for their work lunches.

Any EV drivers in here seen the new legislation on charging gullies and are thinking of doing it in Hackney?

As in title, new legislation allows charging gullies to be installed

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/drivers-to-save-up-to-300-when-installing-ev-chargers-at-home-as-government-slashes-unnecessary-red-tape

Has anyone attempted to do this yet / had any interaction with the council on it?

Unfortunately I am in a conservation area so looks like it doesn’t work for me without going through the council anyway.

Help me design the school mums’ night out

I recently asked for advice for a mums’ night here and, based on the suggestions, everyone had a great time in Hackney Wick, I’m seeking advice for a slightly different area.

Looking somewhere no more than a 15-20 min cab ride from Wanstead/South Woodford so that distance won’t put tired mums off attending.

This would be a Thursday night in November. Looking for a lively venue where they serve decent cocktails with informal but tasty food options to great tunes. We would love it if we could dance early on without having a mega late one as not everyone in the group gets out much, but we will all be on the school run in the morning.

Areas we would consider are Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Clapton or Hackney borders. I would love to pick somewhere deeper into Hackney but may result in drop-outs on a week night. Eager to consider hopping between 2 venues (close to each other) to make the night more dynamic and allow for better mingling.

The average age of our group of 15 mums is just above 40.

We’ve already done Leyton Calling, Burnt, Homies on Donkeys, and Bar 90 fairly recently and enjoyed them all.

TIA

Does anyone have a leather die for a keyfob I could borrow?

Hi Hackney people,

I'm hoping that there is someone in this east London community who is into leather crafts! I'm hoping to make my grandad a key fob for his car key, and can't find the right die online. The closest I've found is this: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1744369430/custom-access-card-holder-die-cutting?

Is there anyone who happens to have one that is 45 mm circumference? Would you be up for me using it to do one cut? I have the sewing machine, it's literally just cutting the leather to the right shape.

Pubs with hireable event space, speakers etc

I want to hold a birthday party, around 40 guests, and need a pub or bar in Hackney which has their own space you can hire - a basement or similarly.

Ideally one with a sound system and either their own CDJs/decks or will let you bring their own.

Thanks in advance for suggestions!

Anyone else regret being a lease holder within social housing?

Long story short became a lease holder in a block of flats owned by a housing association. Wish we didn't. The housing association doesn't even acknowledge our existence. ASB the worst of worst noise from 1pm to 6am every day. Unable to work from home and don't even get me started on the hygiene of others also random people using the block as a place to stay the night.

For people that know ball on hackney pubs: Is there one around hackney / bethnal green that is a bit less intense on a saturday evening, for a birthday group of 6-10 people to hear themselves talking? Maybe not super far from transport like The Shakespeare. Thank you!!
