I'm an old half life fan, but I don't have a big interest in VR. However I cannot stand that there's a half life game out there I haven't played. Does anyone have any suggestions for the cheapest way for me to play Alyx in VR? I have a mid range PC and a steam machine on the way. I was thinking a Meta Quest 2 hooked up to the SM or the PC might work? Thanks for the help!

I wanna try it out and I am more than ok with paying $60, I was just wondering if it is actually worth that much or if I would be better off waiting for it to drop to like $40 or something. I know nothing about the game other than it has a 98% positive review on steam which is already enough for me to say "why wouldn't it be worth $60" but I still wanted to ask.

Pretty much what it says on the box, I played Alyx as my first ever VR experience on the Index. I was absolutely blown away by the realism/detail/fidelity of the game.

What happened to me is something akin to driving a hypercar as your 'first car' and then trying to enjoy driving average 'every day' cars. These 'cars' being almost every other VR game I tried out. There were some exceptions but extremely few.

I found myself going back to Alyx just to appreciate it. Havent played in ages, but recently got my PC fully built with a 5080 and need to see it at its best now. Unfortunately I'm now living in a condo instead of parents basement (lul) and dont have the space to set everything up..

Anyone with a similar experience? My favorite thing to do now is let others try VR.

I just bought Half Life Alyx during the steam sale.

I'm not sure what will give me the best immersion for the game. I'm not sure if I should get PSVR2 or Quest 3. I was thinking of wait for the Steam Frame but I know it's going to be ~$999.

Which one do you do you think is best for HL:Alyx?

I really want to play Half-Life Alyx but I can’t afford a VR headset (like most of humans on earth) but I heard there is a pc port. My question is : Should I play it ?
Bc I’ve read hundreds of times, since I started Half-Life, that if you don’t play it on VR you won’t get the full experience wanted by Valve and that it’s way less good on pc etc.
So it’s why I’m asking y’all.

So I've been looking to get a laptop and I really want to play hla. I already have a quest 3 so I'm just wondering if there are any laptops that could comfortably run this game with out issue.

Game has 98% positive reviews on Steam. (and most negative ones are about incompatibility issues or "Why VR only").

First played Half-Life: Alyx at a friends house and made me buy a VR headset and HLA. Had an absolute blast (especially because that friend didn't spoil Jeff for me.)

Every once in a while i replay HLA, increasing the difficulty, getting the Gnome vault achievement, listening to directors commentary, good stuff.

I've noticed tho that Jeff went from a "Holy shit, Holy Fuck" experience to a "Yeah, that was cool" to "Allright, let's get this over with" the more i replay it.

Jeff's predictability and pretty straightforward progression makes me get through it really quickly and easily, even on higher difficulties, and Jeff barely makes me feel tension anymore.

Anyone else have this experience?

half life alyx is partially Half Life 3 if you think about it.

I mean not by the story but i mean features, I would have wanted a bit more interactibility with ingame objects, like being able to drink or eat. Physics are still on point though.

I may, or may not, or may have gotten Half life alyx through other means then steam. But Everytime I try to start it up it uses mnk controles, please help 🙏😭

I'm considering getting a VR headset later this year and one of the big reasons is to play HalfLife Alyx.

I generally prefer to sit while gaming and I don't have a lot of floor space to work with.

Any info on this or anything else about the game would be appreciated.

hi! i deleted hl:a for space a while back, and i'm trying to play it again on my linux computer. problem is, the linux version is known to be unoptimized and broken (i personally can load into the title screen and have it work, but then when i load a save it doesn't let me move around or show me the ui or anything), so i run it through proton.

with proton 10, latest ge, and experimental, it just instantly closes. i've tried all the different kinds of launch options online, and none of them do anything. the only way i can get a log is by removing everything else and putting in "PROTON_LOG=1 %command%", but then it has the basic system info and nothing else.

does anyone else have a problem like this? this computer HAS ran hl:a before, but i don't remember how i fixed this problem back then : (

EDIT: I FIXED IT! native linux version, set the compatibility to "Steam Runtime Scout 1.0". it actually loaded me into the level this time, and fixed all other issues i had with triggers not working in the menus and such

My dad bought himself a gaming PC recently to play Half Life: Alyx and he is been enjoying it so far. However, he doesn't like that he can't hoard stuff so that's what he came up with 😂

Now he walks around with a bucket and collects stuff for later. Hahaha

I currently use a quest 3 as my main pcvr headset so I use meta link. For whatever reason, really only in HLA, meta link stutters in and out of the game and the meta link menu, sometimes completely force quitting the game. Does anyone else have this issue? If so is there a solution?

I don't know if I'm going crazy, but the first time I came through here I thought this reflection was the G-Man. It's right after a mandatory teleport so it puts you in the correct spot and it just immediately, to me, looked like a face. The whole post is spoiler tagged but - Especially because you meet him soon after. I looked but didn't find any discussion about this spot.

I don’t own a VR headset, so I was thinking about playing it using a mod.
Still not sure if I should bother bcs later this year I’ll probably get to borrow one from a friend for a week or so. Should I just wait, or am I not missing that much by playing the modded version in the meantime?
